Illegal adoption: Anambra hands over orphanage founder to NAPTIP
5th October 2023
By
Ikenna Obianeri
The Anambra State Government has handed over the Founder of the Arrows of God Community Children’s Home, Onitsha, Rev D.C Ogo, who was recently accused of illegal adoption to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons.

Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday.

The ministry had in August 2023 sealed off the orphanage located in Nkwelle 33, near Onitsha over allegations of illegal adoption and selling of children.

About 20 children, including a newborn baby, were recovered from the orphanage while the founder and the employees reportedly fled at the time.

The government’s decision came after an investigative piece published by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism exposed the orphanage for allegedly trading babies for cash.

The report published on August 10, 2023, was an outcome of a 19-month investigation conducted by an investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo.

But in the Wednesday statement, Ikeanyionwu said when the founder was asked why it took her two months to surface after the sealing off of the home, she claimed that she was sick and, hence, could not come when she was summoned.

The statement read, “The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare has handed over the Founder of Arrows of God Community Children’s Home in Nkwelle 33, Rev D.C Ogo, to men of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for illegal adoption.

“This was done following an investigative report which made the rounds on social media and local television stations alleging that the state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare was involved in an illegal adoption of a baby girl alongside one of her registered homes in the state.”

The statement quoted the commissioner as lamenting over the bad image Ogo has given the state.

The commissioner was said to have warned other children’s home operators to desist from all forms of illegalities that would bring bad name to the state.

“On why she carried out the adoption process, despite the commissioner’s warning, Ogo could not come up with any reasonable excuse to the question, but rather said it was her Secretary, one Mr Monday who handled the adoption,” the statement added.

Obi, others laud Soludo for renaming airport after Achebe
By Uzoma Nzeagwu, Awka

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has described the renaming of the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport after the late literary icon, Prof. Chinua Achebe, by the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, as a most delightful and welcome development.

In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi stated that Achebe’s towering stature as a global literary pioneer and icon was deserving of such recognition.

The former Anambra governor thanked Soludo for the decision.
He said: “The renaming of the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport to Chinua Achebe International Airport, is a most delightful and welcome development. The late literary icon deserves all the honour that the state and the nation can bestow.

“Achebe’s towering stature, as a global literary pioneer and icon, is deserving of such recognition. I congratulate the Achebe family for the honour and Kudos to the Governor Charles Soludo for the timely and fitting decision, which is consistent with extant best practices.”
ALSO, the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), Anambra State chapter, has also commended Soludo, saying it was the best Independence Day gift to them.

Coordinator of the group in the state, Izunna Okafor, in a statement, said that the decision to immortalise the literary giant, is extraordinary and that his group was highly pleased about the development.

He said: “The news of renaming the airport after Achebe filled our hearts with boundless joy. It is an affirmation of the value and significance of literature in our society.

“As young writers, we have consistently championed the call for the immortalisation of Achebe through our yearly programme, the ‘Chinua Achebe Literary Festival and Memorial Lecture.’

“This programme, which we initiated in 2016, serves as a platform to honour Achebe’s enduring legacy. We hold this event at the Anambra State Central E-Library, Awka, where we also unveil an international poetry/essay anthology (Chinua Achebe Poetry/Essay Anthology) yearly in his honour.”

Independence: Soludo renames Anambra Cargo Airport after Chinua Achebe
By NAN
Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, has renamed the state’s International Passenger and Cargo Airport after late Chinua Achebe, a novelist, to immortalise him for making an indelible mark on the history of human civilisation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Achebe a native of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, died on March 21, 2013, at age 82, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Soludo said this on Sunday in Awka at the Independence Day parade, to mark Nigeria’s 63rd anniversary, describing Achebe as an example of Africa’s unsung hero.
“Achebe, a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic, gave the African literature an identity and a voice and he rightly reconstructed and refined the identify of the people,” he said.
The governor said that Achebe was not just an Anambra hero nor a Nigerian hero, but an African and global hero and yet largely unsung at home.
He said that henceforth, the state shall be deliberate in fishing out and celebrating its largely unsung heroes as motivation to children and youths.
“Unfortunately, some people wrongly think of legacies in terms of brick and mortar. Legacy is about impact on human life and human civilisation.
“Achebe was not a president or governor or military. He did not build bridges or roads or airports but he will outlive most presidents, governors and ministers in our minds.
“Achebe rejected Nigeria’s national honours twice in protest against what he perceived as injustice to his home state Anambra. Today, Anambra will finally honour him.
“After wide consultations, there is a broad consensus that no one is more deserving to be named after the first airport in Anambra than Anambra’s all-time greatest literary gift to the world, Chinua Achebe.
“Consequently, we will rename the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, to Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri.
“Yes, it has to be an international airport, and we hope to work with the Federal Government to give full effect to its international status,” he said.
Soludo urged Nigerians to be intentional about making the project Nigeria work and believe in the potential greatness of the country.
“We have muddled through the past 63 years with squandered opportunities and yet with the promise of potential greatness
“No country or nation is a perfect. Every nation continues to struggle in its match to a more perfect union. The path to stability, growth and sustainability will be challenging as there are no quick fixes.
“But all of us must collectively think and work Nigeria out of the current challenges. We have no other country but Nigeria, and we must make it to work for everyone, “he said.
The governor said his administration was founded on the true progressive agenda and would continue to create the enabling environment for residents to thrive and survive.
NAN reports that the police, paramilitary organisations and students from different schools took part in the parade.
