The New Patriotic Party government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo as president has education as its topmost priority as it believes it is a key to both individual and national development.
The implementation of their flagship program the free SHS policy, though laudable has brought with it major problems regarding congestion in second cycle institutions.
To curb that temporarily, the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service have introduced the track system that allows a group of junior high school students to take turns to have their lessons and examinations.
While at it, the Government is also undertaking major infrastructural projects in almost all Senior High Schools across the country to eventually do away with the track system, and allow all student to be in school for the maximum period of time, and the Western Region has had its fair share.
On Friday July,10 2020 Regional Minister Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah handed over a dining Hall complex and auxiliary facilities and a Six Unit Classroom block in Fiaseman Senior High School and Tarkwa Senior High School respectively, both in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

The Regional Minister, Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah while inspecting the progress of the work in the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies expressed profound gratitude to the people of the Western Region for strictly adhering to the directives issued.

“Western Region is special, in the sense that we contribute up to 60% of all of Ghana’s revenue. Today, Accra, Kumasi, Obuasi and parts of Central Region has been locked down because of COVID-19. In line with the president’s vision to defeat the virus, it is prudent all regions in the country take proactive steps to prevent same. We started off by advising everyone to be keen on hand washing, and then keep a social distance. To add up now is the ‘spraying’ you are going to embark on, because we are told that the virus can stay in the atmosphere for some 2-3 hours, and may fall on surfaces”, he said charging a group of young men poised to disinfect in Tarkwa- Nsuaem markets

The minister who also doubles as the MP for Takoradi further explained chlorine, the chemical being used for the disinfection exercise is safe for human consumption.
From Tarkwa, he proceeded to Bogoso, Prestea Himan and Wassa Akropong where he personally led the disinfecting teams in the exercise.

MARKET AND TRANSPORT LEADERS RECEIVE EDUCATION ON COVID-19.
The increasing numbers of confirmed cases for COVID-19 in Ghana has warranted that intense education be carried to all nook and crannies of the country. The latest cases were confirmed on March 21 and are believed to be imported, according to the Ghana Health Service. Currently, COVID-19 has affected 24 persons with 1 death.
In line with central government’s efforts to curb the pandemic, the Western Regional Coordinating Council on Monday March 23, officially launched the Education and ‘Sensitization of Market representatives and Other Important Stakeholders on COVID-19’ at Regional Coordinating Council, Sekondi.
In his welcome address, the Regional Minister and MP for Takoradi, Dr. Kwabena Okyeye Darko-Mensah reiterated the directives issued by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on how to cease the spread of COVID-19 in Ghana.
He further commended residents of the Western Region for heeding to the calls of the president of the republic and charged them to keep at it until the virus is defeated. Dr. Darko-Mensah was hopeful that having initiated and won personal and collective battles in homes and work places, similar determination and tenacity will ensure that the war against the global pandemic COVID-19 shall be won.
“Determination, oneness, tenacity of purpose and the can-do-spirit is what is required to defeat this enemy which seems to threaten the foundation of our beloved country and our very existence and survival”, he said.
On her part, Barbara Oteng Gyasi, Hon. Minister for Tourism, Arts & Culture and MP for Prestea Huni Valley, delivering a keynote address on behalf of His Excellency the President, explained that the President’s directives are because he values every life and wants to safeguard same.
She underscored the uniquely significant roles the market and transport unions play in the day to day lives of the Ghanaian as the reason why the government has been hesitant in closing them down. She emphasized that it is there even more important that hygiene mechanisms be strictly adhered to, to prevent the spread of the global pandemic.
“We must ensure that the education is done properly at the various markets and lorry parks. This is because the moment the pandemic hits any of these two, the spread may be too difficult to contain”, she said charging the market and transport union leaders.
She suggested to the market women to consider taking turns during the seven days of the week to sell their goods so as to properly implement the social distancing advised by health experts.
The Tourism, Arts and Culture minister on behalf of central government donated Veronica Buckets, Liquid Soap, Hand Sanitizer and Tissue Towels to the Regional Minister who in turn handed them over to the MMDCE’s for onward presentation to the market and transport union leaders present.
Senior nursing officers demonstrated the proper ways of hand washing and hand sanitizer use to be taught to their families, traders at the market, drivers and passengers.
In attendance at the launch were the Honorable Deputy Regional Minister, Gifty E. K**i, Regional Chief Director, Mr. Michael Ataogye, Honorable Metropolitan/Municipal/District Chief Executives of Sekondi-Takoradi, Hon. Anthony K.K Sam, Effia Kwesimintsm, Hon. Kojo Acquah, Elembelle, Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh, Wassa East, Hon. Wilson Arthur and Ahanta West, Hon. Henrietta Mary Eyison.
Also present were the members of the Regional Security Council, Paramount Queen Mother of Essikado, Nana Ekua Kodu II, market and transport leaders from the respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies who had their turn to enumerate the measures they have put in place at the various markets and lorry parks to help curb the pandemic.
