Are your thoughts on star trails in Joshua Tree National Park?
Star trails are the continuous paths created by stars, produced during long-exposure photos, such as the image in this post. In other words, the camera doesn’t track along with the stars’ apparent motion as night passes. Instead, the camera stays fixed, while, as the hours pass, the stars move. The resulting photo shows the nightly movement of stars on the sky’s dome.
Star trails reflect Earth’s rotation, or spin, on its axis. The Earth rotates full circle relative to the backdrop stars in a period of about 23 hours and 56 minutes. So, as seen from Earth, all the stars go full circle and return to the same place in the sky after this period of time, which astronomers call a sidereal (stellar) day.

Joshua Tree is fantastic, I would say epic in fact, and be sure to add it to your bucket list. The rocks, the sunrises and sunsets, the fauna and flora. 💯
Thanks to for organizing an awesome camp at Hidden Valley and guiding us on adventures into 'The Wonderland of Rocks,' 'Hidden Valley,' 'Hall of Horrors,' and Keys View to name a few spots.
I brought out my pizza oven to the desert and made some delicious meals...might be my new camping party trick.
Can't wait to get back, who wants to come?

This piece of atomic awesomeness sits in Joshua Tree California and is one of only a few remaining futuro houses still standing, one of the coolest too.

Joshua trees are slow-growing, but because of this, they live for a long time. Those dispersed seeds require "well-timed" rains to begin growing, but it’s also important to have a good freeze during the winter. Researchers think the freezing temperatures damage the growing portion of the branch and stimulate both flowering and branching. Some seeds don't get the rains and thus never develop while others don't receive the winter snap. Those trees end up looking like tall, slightly bulbous stalks that never bloom or grow branches. During its time as a seedling, a Joshua Tree may grow around 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) a year for 10 years, depending on conditions. After that, growth slows to a crawl, with plants averaging 1.5 inches a year.

is to celebrate and appreciate lizards. Lizards are in the squamate (scaled) reptile group. Most lizards are quadrupedal, running with a strong side-to-side motion, though there are legless lizards. Lizards, like snakes, have a movable quadrate bone, a bone between the base of the lower jaw and the skull. Their skin is covered in overlapping scales made of keratin. This skin is tough and leathery, and it sheds or molts as the animal grows. Lizards make use of a variety of anti-predator adaptations, including venom, camouflage, reflex bleeding, and the ability to regrow their tails.
World Lizard Day provides the opportunity for a fun celebration of a reptilian fascination, and a chance to teach our kids about the world around us. Most of all, World Lizard Day seems geared towards helping those who enjoy reptiles to celebrate them, and those who don't to learn about them.
One of our favorite lizards here in Joshua Tree National Park is the Great Basin collard lizard (Crotaphytus bicinctores) also known commonly as the desert collard lizard. What are some of your favorite lizards?

Digging into Joshua Tree's Geology
The geologic landscape of Joshua Tree has long fascinated visitors to this desert. How did the rocks take on such fantastic shapes? What forces sculpted them?
Geologists believe the face of our modern landscape was born more than 100 million years ago. Molten liquid, heated by the continuous movement of Earth’s crust, oozed upward and cooled while still below the surface. These plutonic intrusions are a granitic rock called monzogranite. Go to www.nps.gov/jotr to learn more about the geology of Joshua Tree National Park. Oh Joshua Tree, you stole my heart. Fun fact Cody and I are National Park enthusiasts, we even have a passport book like nerds 🤣🤣 the goal is to make it to every single one and so far we’ve made it to about 30 of the 421, lmfao slowly and steady wins the race eh? Heading back to North Carolina tomorrow to finish up our last couple months there—California you’ve shown me so much love I can’t wait to be back for good very very soon!
