Indo-Trinidadian fusions: ‘chutney’ pop music and its Bhojpuri roots.
The global Indian diaspora is larger than any other. Successive waves of outward migration have been scattering the sonic cultures of the Subcontinent around the world for centuries, spawning countless offshoots and localised fusions. So many gorgeous sounds being created.

Supporting other creatives and South Asian Heritage Month. Anisha Parmar London has a beautiful new jewellery collection out called The Pink City Collection.
"When visiting Jaipur I was so drawn to the ornate architecture, and motifs that adorned the main monuments of the Hawa Mahal, City palace, Amber Font and Chand Baori (well steps) but also the small shops, family homes, small roadside shrines and restaurants too. It reminded me how much adornment is ingrained in South Asian culture and an integral part of how we express who we are. And so for my Pink City Collection I was keen to make a celebration of this sentiment- Bold in colour, motifs of the beloved haathi (elephant) and Mor (peacock) with my own version of an embellished doorway to paradise. The Pink City collection is here to remind you of those motifs that are a gateway to Home, transporting you to the magical city of Jaipur".

"Eye on the Sparrow"
We love Emma's voice on this recording. You may remember this song - it was made popular by Lauryn Hill in the hit film Sister Act 2.

We are so lucky to have Emma on this track as she's normally to be found in Musical Theatre in the West End and has an upcoming debut album herself. 🎤🎼

Such a powerful emotive rendition and we can't wait for you to hear it on our upcoming album " Spiritual Bridges" out on the 16th July.

Thank you to Emma Lindars and Tom Beech Music

Welcome to Ragatip

Music, ideas, and creative voices from South Asia and beyond. As lifelong lovers of Indian classical and folk music, our mission is to grow a community that appreciates and understands these great art forms, as well as the diverse human situations behind them.

What will I find on Ragatip? We have blogs and bitesize articles covering everything from devotional dance and tabla mythology to modern Sufi fusions and South Indian protest music. We seek to shine light onto the lives, routines, and beliefs behind the sounds, encouraging fresh perspectives on issues ranging from past inequality and present-day discrimination to how the spirituality of the creative process may change into the future.

There are countless hidden histories to explore - such as how Bengal had its own thriving jazz scene in the 1920s, or what led to the rise of Indo-Swahili pop music in today’s Kenya (or why a teenage Zakir Hussain ended up living on the Grateful Dead’s psychedelic ranch for a summer). We profile some of South Asia’s most intriguing musical innovators, spanning stubborn global superstars to forest-dwelling tabla masters of ages past, along with interviews, instrument primers, and more.

Join us! We launched in June 2020. New content every week - sign up to the Ragatip site, and follow us on this page too. Start by browsing all our articles here.
