On Thursday 19 May 2022, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong - Peprah and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Frank Hansen paid a day’s working visit to Foward Operating Bases (FOBs) at Dorkorkyina and Bui to ascertain firsthand the current security situation in both camps and their respective Areas of Operation. The visit was necessitated by the recent security situation in our neighboring countries and the need for the Ghana Armed Forces to remain professional, robust and alert at all times.

At the Dorkorkyina Camp, the Chief of Air Staff was delighted at the pace of work in the new camp and was hopeful that work would continue at the same pace to ensure the urgent completion of the rest of the FOB.

On his part, the COAS thanked the Chief of Air Staff and the whole of the Ghana Air Force for their unwavering support in the conduct of various Army operations, exercises and events. He said there was the need for all to remain united to achieve the tasks of the military competently.

The delegation also visited the construction site at FOB Bui to inspect progress of work there. The Director for Health and Safety of Bui Power Authority (BPA) met with the delegation and assured them of the anticipated timely completion of the project.

Following a tour of the site, the COAS intimated that due to the security threats in the sub region, it had become imperative for the project to be completed expeditiously so that more troops could be deployed there to assure the security of the national asset and its environs against emerging threats.

A mission accomplishment parade has been held for Ghana Company 5 (GHANCOY 5) after a successful one year tour of duty with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mission in Gambia (ECOMIG) on Monday 9 May, 2022 at the Air Force Base, Accra.

Addressing the parade, the Director General (DG) Defence Communication and Information Systems, Brig Gen Anthony Ntem who was the Reviewing Officer commended the troops for the professionalism they displayed during their tour in the Gambia.

He stated that the Military High Command had monitored their operational activities keenly since their departure and was aware of the challenges and constraints under which they operated in the Mission Area. He however assured personnel that critical measures were being put in place to ease the constraint under which troops operate in the Mission Areas.

Brig Gen Ntem mentioned that as part of the expansion and restructuring of Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Formations, new Units had been established to help in safeguarding the territorial boundaries of Ghana. He urged all who would find themselves posted to these new establishments to demonstrate a high sense of professionalism, loyalty and discipline at all times. “Whatever positive operational lessons you have learnt should be applied to the benefit of GAF.” he said.

On behalf of the Chief of the Defence Staff and the Military High Command, he presented a citation to the Commanding Officer (CO), Lt Col Andrew Awuni for his immeasurable commitment and contribution towards the successes chalked by the Company during their tour of duty.

Eight Hundred and Sixty-Seven (867) Trainees under the City Response Team (CRT) Initiative have passed out at the 5Bn Square in Burma Camp on Tuesday 26 April 2022, after successfully undergoing 4 weeks of basic training at the Battle Training Camp (BTC), Bundase.

The CRT is one of the interventions of the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ Campaign which is a long-term plan to maintain discipline and order in our urban region as part of government’s strategic initiative of “Making Greater Accra Work.”

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon Henry Quartey disclosed that with the help of the Ghana Armed Forces the trainees have undergone a 4-week intensive training in basic drill, crowd control, VIP protection, personal security and voice procedure amongst others. He therefore hoped that given the high standards of our Armed Forces, coupled with the smart turn out of the personnel, they would be able to deliver on their duties.

During the graduating ceremony, the General Officer Commanding Southern Command, Brig Gen MA Amoah commended the trainees for successfully completing the training while stressing that “The Ghana Armed Forces recognises that cooperation with its civil partners was important in nation building therefore training assistance to the Accra City Response team was a welcomed responsibility.” He further added that civil – military cooperation has been a long-standing tradition for the Ghana Armed Forces and the military in the past has partnered and cooperated with a number of civil institutions and organizations.

The Minister for Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery in his speech, applauded the Regional Minister for setting up the CTR to ensure the actualization of the “Let’s Make Greater Accra Work” Agenda.

United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 9 held its Medal Presentation Parade on Tuesday 19 April 2022 at the Battalion Headquarters in Bentiu. The ceremony was to award troops with the prestigious UNMISS Medal in recognition of their sacrifice, devotion and commitment to maintaining peace in South Sudan.

The memorable ceremony saw the Commanding Officer, Lt Col Michael Mfum command the parade made up of 4 contingents with a special drill display from 2 of the contingents.

In his speech, the Reviewing Officer and Acting Force Commander of the Mission, Maj Gen Mohammad Main Ullah Chowdhury, congratulated troops of UNMISS GHANBATT 9 for earning the UN medal. He also commended personnel of the Battalion for their high sense of professionalism and dedication to duty despite the many challenges faced in their Areas of Operation (AoR) in Bentiu, Leer and Koch. He added that, GHANBATT’s contribution to fighting floods in Bentiu and Rubkona was commendable.

Maj Gen Ullah Chowdhury praised GHANBATT for putting smiles on the faces of locals within their AoR through the diverse Civil-Military Corporation (CIMIC) activities undertaken. Among others, he mentioned the 6-month tailoring course organized for a cross-section of parishioners of St Martins de Porres church, the 3-month Information Communication and Technology training organized for a cross-section of the youth in Bentiu and the numerous medical outreaches and veterinary services extended to the locals in GHANBATT’s AoR.

The Reviewing Officer on behalf of the Special Representative of the Secretary General, expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana for its continuous interest in support of global peace. He applauded the 103 females of GHANBATT 9 for their dynamism and meaningful contribution in the quest to attain the UNMISS Mandate. He urged all troops to display professionalism wherever they find themselves in the line of duty.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency, Hon Samuel Abu Jinapor has paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama on Thursday 14 April, 2022 at the General Headquarters in Burma Camp.

The visit was to discuss the upcoming Green Ghana Project – government’s flagship program aimed at promoting reforestation and afforestation in the country and to also deepen the existing relationship between the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ministry.

Vice Admiral Amoama welcomed the team and commended the Minister for his continuous support and contribution to GAF especially during Internal Security Operations (IS OPS) - Operation Halt and Operation Vanguard.

He also assured the Minister of his support for the Ministry and stated that the collaboration between the two organizations would help in the fight against deforestation in the country.

Hon Abu Jinapor commended GAF for their immense contribution towards the Green Ghana Project which is geared towards reforestation and afforestation. According to him, the Ministry is aiming at planting 20 million seedlings on Green Ghana Day 2022 (June 10) and GAF is expected to play a key part in its efforts. Hon Jinapor added that the existing collaboration with GAF would continue to grow stronger to address the issues of deforestation and galamsey in the country.

Northern Command in collaboration with sister security services conducted ‘Ex Cool Chop 2022’ – a counter terrorism exercise – on Thursday 7 April 2022. The exercise was aimed at testing the operational readiness, especially in counter-terrorism drills, of 11 Mechanized Battalion, Ghana Police Service, National Investigation Bureau and Customs Division personnel deployed in Bawku. Expectations are that the exercise would equip them to deal with issues of banditry, robbery, trafficking, illicit trade and terrorist activities.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 9 organised an inter-company drill competition on Saturday 26 March 2022 at the Battalion Headquarters in Bentiu, South Sudan. The aim of the competition was to sharpen the foot and rifle drill of competitors, enhance teamwork, improve the turnout of troops and also develop the leadership skills of officers and non-commissioned officers.

In his opening remarks, the Commanding Officer, Lt Col Michael Mfum commended troops for competing for their respective companies. He emphasized the need for soldiers to appreciate drill as it is the bedrock of military discipline and also promotes esprit de corps.

The audience were treated to a spectacular drill display from 5 contingents drawn from Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Headquarters companies with the females of the Battalion (Yaa Asantewaa) also forming a contingent. From slow to quick march, rifle exercises, sentry drills among others, the contingents thrilled the audience with a well-executed display. The spectacle by the all-female contingent was in honour of Ghana’s first female General, the late Major General Constance Emefa Adjeani-Afenu who was laid to rest on Friday 25 March 2022.

In the speech by the Guest of Honour, Deputy Sector Commander Colonel Mohammed Kashif Naeem, he applauded GHANBATT for their initiative to organise such a healthy competition among troops, adding that, he believed the purpose for which the competition was organized was achieved. Col Kashif Naeem was confident that the turnout and wonderful drill display was an indication of GHANBATT’s readiness to discharge its duties in any circumstance.

At the end of the competition, Charlie Company was fifth, the all-female (Yaa Asantewaa) Contingent took the fourth position with Alpha and Bravo placing third and second respectively. The Headquarters Company emerged overall best in the Competition.

President Pays Visit To GAF, Commissions Projects.

The President and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo has presented newly acquired vehicles to GAF at Burma Camp.

The ceremony which took place on Wednesday 27 October, 2021 saw him present 40 Jeeps, 6 Toyota Hiace Mini buses and 14 Toyota Pick-ups.

As part of his itinerary for the visit, he cut sod for the commencement of phase II of a $24.8 million housing project and inspected a 7 storey Army Headquarters office complex which is currently under construction.

In his welcome address, the Minister of Defence, Honourable Dominic Nitiwul expressed his appreciation to the President for his commitment to modernise GAF. He reassured him that the vehicles would enable the Service conduct its internal and external duties with professionalism for peace and security of the country.

He said Government was committed to the needs of the Armed Forces and that steps were being taken to ensure that those needs were met for equitable distribution of developmental projects in an atmosphere of peace and security. He noted that combating crimes posed by extremist groups operating along the northern borders required real time surveillance capacity, high mobility, force protection, fire power and communication. He commended the leadership of GAF for its commitment and dedication in ongoing operations such as Conquered Fist and Mother Land which were intended to create a secured and peaceful environment along the North Western, Northern and North Eastern borders.

"The all-round protection provided for the country has been made possible through your vigilance and sacrifice notwithstanding the modest resources you have to work with. Ghana is forever indebted to you,” he added.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony were the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, Service Chiefs and Directors.

In related news, the President also visited the Military Academy and Training Schools were he inspected the new Military Academy Administration Office, Platoon Commanders block, cadet accommodation and accommodation for Officers being constructed by Poly Changda Overseas Engineering Company Limited and Poly Technologies Incorporated.

Ghana Celebrates 76th United Nations Day

The 76th United Nations (UN) Day celebration was held at the forecourt of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on Sunday, 24 October 2021.

It was under the theme “United Nations and Ghana: Working together for a Sustainable and Inclusive Society towards recovery in a post COVID- 19 Era”. The theme reaffirmed the UN’s shared commitment to stay on the path towards sustainable development for all, as they strived to recover from the impact of COVID-19.

United Nations Organization was founded in 1945 after the Second World War. 51 countries pledged their commitment to maintaining international peace and security by developing friendly relations among nations in order to promote social progress, better living standards and human rights.

Honourable Charles Abani, UN Resident Coordinator in his speech said Ghana is a proud and active member of the United Nations and commended the government of Ghana for its continued support even in this difficult time of the COVID- 19 pandemic. According to him, the theme underscored the need for greater urgency and ambition to end the pandemic , accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals with renewed hope as the UN remained committed to supporting Ghana achieve its mission.

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Honourable Kwaku Ampratum- Sarpong on behalf of Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said Ghana in partnership with the UN and other development partners had made significant progress in laying the foundation for a transformational, peaceful and resilient society to guarantee equitable opportunities for all her people.

“Ghana will bring to bear the work of the Security Council to restore stability, peace and security in troubled areas. Ghana will also use her tenure on the UN Security Council to seek collaboration between the UN and the regional organization” he said.

He added that Ghana was duty bound to demonstrate resilience and be conscious of the fact that without sustained and collaborative efforts, desires and aspirations for a better world for all would remain a dream.

Security Services Hold National Day Of Prayer

The Annual Security Services National Day of Prayer has been held at the Garrison Methodist Presbyterian Church (GMPC), Burma Camp on Thursday 21 October 2021.

The national day of prayer which was under the theme, “Incline your ears to our cry, O’ God, hear our prayers and heal our land”, was to bring together personnel of the security services to pray for the country and its leadership.

Brigadier General Mike Akpatsu (rtd), President of Ghana Military Christian Fellowship (GMCF) in his remarks, said security personnel were the watchmen of the country and needed to call on the name of Yahweh to have mercy on them.

He added that in three successive years, the GMCF has collaborated with the Directorate of Religious Affairs and the Gideons International to hold intercessory prayer for the nation.

Rev Capt (GN) Paul Adjei-Djan Director Religious Affairs of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in his welcome address stated that prayer was the key to opening all doors and opportunities. He said the beginning of mankind does not matter but his end, and added that for the end to be good, one must consult the maker.

Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, who was the Guest of Honour, thanked God for a successful conduct of the National Day of Fasting and Prayer. He said Ghana was noted as an oasis of peace and tranquility and advised all to be vigilant in order for the country to continue to be peaceful. He also urged Christians to stand united and lift up the nation before the throne of God.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in conjunction with the 37 Military Hospital and the Air Force Wives Association (AWA), organised a Health Walk to educate GAF women, Civilian Employees and wives of personnel on Breast Cancer Awareness on Thursday, 21 October, 2021 at the GAF Sports Complex, Burma Camp.

The walk started from the Nicholson Park, through some principal streets within Burma Camp and its environs and ended at the GAF Sports Complex. Participants were taken through aerobics and a talk on how to perform breast self-examination at home.

The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama in his brief remarks, commended participants. He noted that breast cancer could affect every individual and not only women. He said global statistics showed that 2.3 million women were diagnosed worldwide and 685,000 deaths occurred in 2020. He added that 7.8 million diagnoses had been recorded over the past five years making breast cancer the most prevalent of all cancers.

Other activities to mark the awareness week was health screenings held at Burma Hall in Burma Camp on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 October 2021.
