Championing the education of girls and boys in the world’s third largest refugee camp
I won’t stop until every young refugee boy and girl is educated

At 52 years, Khadija Hassan commonly known as ‘Mama Khadija’ fights for the education of young girls and boys in Dadaab refugee camps. As soon as she completed high school, war broke out in her country and she fled to Kenya.

Khadija arrived in Dadaab in April 1992 and soon after, got an opportunity to study English for two and a half years.

“I was then hired by CARE International, as a social service worker. My work was to identify social issues affecting the refugee community and advocating for interventions and helped me learn the diverse challenges faced by refugees made me realize my passion of assisting people,” says Khadija.

“Being a hard worker, my employer transferred me to one of the schools as a Somali teacher in 1997. At the time, I remember seeing only one or two girls in upper classes,” she adds.

Khadija recalls how in 1997, the only library in the school she was teaching in was set on fire by the community due to a misunderstanding on the purpose of a verification exercise scheduled to take place at the facility and organised by UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR.

In the same year, Khadija started working with learners with special needs at Midnimo Primary school where she worked for seven years before being promoted to the position of Head teacher of Friends Primary School in 2004, in Ifo refugee camp where she still lives.

“Being a woman, I used to get despised and even threatened by men. However, they now see how important my role in the community is. This is evident by the number of girls who are in school today, performing better than the boys,” Khadija proudly points out.

The education sector in Dadaab refugee camps constitutes of pre-school, primary, secondary, adult literacy, special education, accelerated learning, vocational training and scholarships for tertiary education.Children make up 57% of the Dadaab refugee population which currently stands at 210,019. It is estimated that only about 2 % get scholarships for higher education.

“My lowest moments are when young bright girls are married off against their will because of ‘cultural expectations’ or young boys abuse drugs and drop out of school. However, my hope is restored by the big number of girls and boys who are still in school. If we support them to get education, then we have succeeded,” observes Khadija

She is disheartened by the negative effect reduced funding has had on education in Dadaab.

“In 2018 alone, 92 refugee incentive and 3 Kenyan teachers were laid off in Ifo camp. Congested classrooms and inadequate teachers will compromise the quality of education,” she decries.

According to Abdul-basit, the Education Officer at Lutheran World Foundation, UNHCR’s education partner, Mama Khadija is an inspiration to all and the community respects her a lot.

“She volunteers her time to mentor girls on the effects of early marriages and importance of education,” he says.

He adds that Khadija is currently an Assistant Education Officer and is also in charge of two schools which have 3,282 learners and also oversees education of learners with special needs.

In addition to her role in the education sector, Khadija also takes care of her late sister’s four children and actively participates in community activities in the camp.

Education unit lobbies for inclusion of refugee students in the mainstream education of the country.

Among the refugee population in Kenya, over half are children of school age (4-18 years). The majority of refugee and asylum-seeking learners are enrolled in pre-primary, primary and secondary schools, and tertiary institutions located in Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps, and Kalobeyei settlement. A small number acquire places to study in public and private universities across Kenya and abroad each year.

Despite significant gains in enrolment at all levels, almost half of school-age refugees are still out of school. The gap in enrolment widens with progression through the levels. One-third of refugees have access to secondary education in Kenya, and less than one-sixth have access to tertiary education, including technical and vocational education and training. Barriers to school enrolment include supply issues as well as socio-economic factors, cultural norms and traditions, many of which are shared by the communities that host refugees and asylum-seekers in Kenya.

While refugees and asylum-seekers follow the Kenyan national curriculum and sit for national examinations, camp-based learning institutions have been managed and financed by UNHCR and the international community for almost three decades. Although the Government of Kenya has made a considerable contribution to the education of refugees and asylum-seekers over the past thirty years, the governance and management of learning institutions by the international community has led to an alternative system of service delivery that is less sustainable and does not adequately respond to the needs of refugees, asylum seekers and their host communities.

In line with the Global Compact for Refugees, UNHCR Kenya promotes the inclusion of refugees and asylum-seekers in the national education system, while responding to their immediate needs by

● Fostering an enabling environment that supports learning as well as psychosocial, socio-emotional and physical well-being.
● Adopting an area-based approach, supporting both refugees and asylum-seekers, and the communities that host them to access education and training, including through the use of technology, in their respective locations and which is protective, accredited and government-led.
● Investing in the national system to enable it to expand to provide quality education and training for refugees and asylum-seekers, and their host communities beyond the emergency phase, facilitating the transition from humanitarian response to durable solutions.
● Promoting opportunities for earning and for the use of education toward jobs, economic inclusion, community development, and self-reliance, benefitting both refugees, asylum-seekers and their host communities.
