Posted • It seems that there has been endless speculation over the years regarding who did hair and especially makeup on the1984 Madonna “Like a Virgin” cover shot by Steven Meisel.
To be clear, it was Rick Gillette. I’m not sure I had worked with Steven, the stylist or the art director before. I wasn’t told what direction we were going in. Miss M and I did not hit it off. So my inspiration came from her punk back ground, clothes and the run down apartment we were working in.
I decided what the f*k, I’m going for all out bitch glamour !!

I never worked with Madonna again, but I’m okay with it.
The pictures we did for Virgin opened the door to all the stunning looks she’s had and the incredible pictures being taken of her till this day ###XX

We pulled all the Madonna vinyl out tonight and while this image is as much a part of our culture as the air we breathe, I fear I’ll never have rock solid confirmation of the makeup artist for this shoot. As we’ve all discussed, it seems to be obvious that it is , but I desperately need that confirmation. There was even a theory that Debi Mazar did the makeup, I asked her and she replied no and added that even SHE didn’t know who it was! So here we are… Desperately Seeking (😉) confirmation…. Calling the Makeup Angels in Heaven- Way? Is that you?

What are YOUR Red Shoes?👠
Just got out of a screening of THE RED SHOES w/ (episode forthcoming) and while we have all been influenced by this masterpiece and we’ve seen its influence in countless works of art that have followed, I realized… I had never seen the film front to back before! And certainly never in the Big Screen… 🙈
I have one question for you all…
What did the Red Shoes want in the end? They pulled her to Julian resulting in her death… but we were set up to believe that the red shoes only wanted to dance… so it’s the Red Shoes that decided to choose love, no?

One more thing about the love of my life, Pretty In Pink…. When I showed my son this movie… he had an allergic reaction. Jax identified so deeply with Duckie that he freaked out when Andie chose Blaine. Honestly he saw nothing good in Blaine from the point where he wouldn’t leave Stef’s party immediately. I was shocked, but saw his point of course after he sited point after point after point proving Duckie was the man for Andie and Andie, in Jaxon’s words, was “a total jerk for not getting it” The shock I felt! Then in the DVD commentary, when Molly Ringwald mentioned she wanted Robert Downey Jr. in the role because “then it would make sense why she went with Duckie in the original ending” he ran out of the room declaring “She’s STILL mean to him 30 years later!” (It was the 30th anniversary interview). 🤣😱💕
Has anyone else’s kids had this reaction!?

The new film from A24, Sophia Coppola's PRISCILLA, is an undisputed feast for the eyes. Released on this past weekend, you hopefully got yourself to the theater to see the incredible detail that was put in to the costumes, set design, hair, makeup and cinematography. As a frequent visitor to Graceland myself and a person who has been known to study every last detail of Priscilla, Elvis and Lisa Marie Presley's aesthetic, I was truly impressed with the visuals because they honored the historical detail while also being somehow unmistakingly Sophia's vision. I loved having Hair Designer Cliona Furey back on the pod to talk about her unbelievable work (no doubt it has been in your feed this entire week!). It's deservedly getting tons of Awards Buzz, and you will love hearing about how she did it, straight from Cliona herself. Enjoy!

Moira tells me about whipping up a wig at a moment's notice for Ayo Edibri, finding individualized hairstyles for all our favorites in the cast including Janelle James, Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lisa Ann Walter as well as the many many many other cast members- kids, parents and more. According to :
“P.J. Soles had never heard of the Ramones before being cast in the film Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979). She was given their music to listen to, but she admits that she did not like it initially. But after her enjoyment of working with them, she became a fan of theirs. Soles purchased her own wardrobe because the film's budget was so low that they could not afford decent clothes for her. She spent her entire salary, $2100.00, on her clothes. The red satin jacket was $300.00 from Fred Segal.
According to Soles, Rod Stewart was at the store and wanted to buy the jacket, but she had claimed it before him.
Despite playing a high school student, Soles was 28 when the movie was filmed and was actually older than three of the four members of the Ramones (only Johnny Ramone was older than Soles).”

Dead Ringers starring Rachel Weisz, now on Amazon Prime, is a limited series based on the original film which starred Jeremy Irons. Judy is the makeup department head and Jason heads up the SFX Team on the show. These two are masters of their craft, that much is certain, but what I really enjoyed talking with them about was the extraordinary way that they approach the subject matter of the show through artistry. We also discuss the observation that audiences are shocked by the "graphic nature" of the scenes in the birthing center of this series, yet are capable of consuming content that is violent and gory without commenting on it. Hear how they worked together on this challenging project and please let me know what you think of Dead Ringers!
