Here's to starting this week with intention!
Can positivity become toxic?
How can positivity possibly become toxic?
If you haven't listened to Episode 141 of the Better Than Gossip Podcast, "Are we all guilty of Toxic positivity?" here's a taste of what you are missing…
We had an enlightening conversation with the "radically honest" Whitney Goodman, LMFT, who is openly challenging our pervasive culture of false positivity in her new book aptly named, Toxic Positivity. She asks us to reflect on how platitudes and all the positive quotes posted on social media might actually be depriving us of the authenticity we crave.
What happens when a young mom finally feels vulnerable enough to share that 'she's overwhelmed with her three young children, her part-time job, and the laundry that has been piling up for days and her friend replies, "Oh, but you have it so much better than most moms with littles."
Where does the conversation go there? How does the one who shared feel hearing her friend say, "It could be worse"? Invalidated, and most likely a sense of shame for not being able to juggle 'all the things' perfectly. Whitney does a masterful job in the podcast of giving us valuable skills to respond to our friends with both understanding and empathy.
"People who feel like they have to silence their emotions feel infinitely worse than the people who get to talk about them." — Whitney Goodman.
Whitney Goodman isn't minimizing positivity, she is redefining it. She asserts that emotions are meant to be experienced. To do this, we have to acknowledge our feelings, experience them, and grow through them. Whitney Goodman's new book, Toxic Positivity, creates the space and offers the tools to help us do this in a reimagined way.
If any of this has piqued your interest, check out Whitney - sitwithwhit, and definitely, pick up a copy of Toxic Positivity today. If you are like me, you will feel challenged by the concept and encouraged by the tools the podcast and book offer to become a more authentic source of positivity.
Take a listen and
You are irreplaceable!
You are one of a kind, there will never be another YOU! Much love from @Amy, Kristen and Lisa
