"On a quest to recapture some excitement and intrigue in their middle years, filmmakers Boris Jänsch, Frank McCaughey and Charles Turley set out to experience for the first time the potent psychoactive substance 5-MeO-DMT. Most notably derived from the Sonoran Desert toad’s defense secretions, the vaporized material can deliver transcendent, otherworldly experiences which often have the effect of blowing apart one’s tidy idea of reality. Its onset is typically within seconds of smoking and effects tend to last for just 10 to 20 minutes on average — a short duration compared to many psychedelics that can buzz on for hours."

Are some doors better left unopened?

"At a Public Safety subcommittee hearing on March 3, Iowa lawmakers unanimously rejected a bill to remove psilocybin and psilocin, the substances found in “magic mushrooms,” from Iowa’s list of Schedule I drugs. These representatives forfeited an opportunity to make our state a leader in the future of mental health treatment."

Instead of demonstrating a nuanced understanding of the mental health landscape, Iowa lawmakers chose to maintain Drug War-era criminalization of “psychedelic” compounds, which is policy deeply rooted in the federal government’s fear of the hippie movement many decades ago. At a Public Safety ...

"Studies of neurons in cell culture discovered that these serotonergic psychedelics can induce a transient increase in the size of dendritic spines as well as a proliferation of the number of their branches. These findings are important because changes in synaptic plasticity and the proliferation of their branches are believed to underlie the reduction in depressive symptoms. "

Psilocybin can increase synaptic plasticity in the brain.

"Hart, who is a psychology professor at Columbia University, raises numerous questions in a blunt and sometimes brusque fashion, asking 'Why is it that guns can be legally purchased but he**in cannot?'

He challenges his readers with remarks like: 'Few would balk at using Vi**ra or Cialis to enhance sexual performance, but many more find it objectionable to use drugs such as amphetamines to improve the sexual experience.'

Hart doesn't mythologize or romanticize drugs or their users, and questions why advocates of the psychedelic movement call themselves 'psychonauts.'

'The term psychonaut in itself is another attempt to dissociate middle-class psychedelic users from users of drugs such as crack and he**in, who are disapprovingly called ‘crackheads’ or ‘dope fiends’.'"

By Roger Chriss, PNN Columnist The book “Drug Use for Grown-Ups” by Carl Hart, PhD, is garnering a lot of attention. Hart argues that recreational drug use is a fundamental human right, while also describing the harms of drug laws and policy on people of color. His book is a mixture of anecdote ...

"Mel said that the therapists and other researchers were talented, kind and caring. Those involved in the Phase III studies are some of the most competent and experienced professionals in the field. Mel said they did have meaningful experiences during the trial. However, the container that was required by the research, which is designed to fit these drugs into the healthcare system, simply wasn't suitable to process the experience. At the end of the three sessions, Mel felt they had not had the white light transformation they had expected from all the media coverage. "I was still horribly broken and it was devastating," they said. "It shattered me in a whole new way." Now Mel meets regularly with an informal support group for others who had negative experiences during or after the MAPS trial.

One of the long-term positive changes Mel did mention was connecting with underground psychedelic practitioners and continuing to work with those medicines without the restrictions of time and procedure. With decades of experience and a more personal approach, these people helped them to reframe their narrative about their trauma and the path of recovery, outside of the narrow confines of the DSM. The reality is that millions of people have done psychedelics for spiritual, therapeutic or recreational purposes and have had healing experiences. Their anecdotal stories are what have inspired the current research, but only a tiny minority have done so under the care of a psychiatrist or conventional therapist."

"Carcillo said, a former teammate introduced him to a farm that grew psychedelic mushrooms. He took a dose of psilocybin, the naturally occurring substance found in "magic" mushrooms that provides a psychedelic effect, and woke up the next day feeling better than he had in years.

"I felt a little bit of joy come back in my life," he said. "I wanted to grab my phone and call my wife right away and reconnect with my kids. I felt like the brain fog and fatigue was starting to lift. It just got better progressively as the days went on."

Carcillo began treating his brain injuries with a regular low dose of psilocybin for six months, and said his brain tests were coming back cleaner than they had in years."

"While his efforts highlight the reality that psychedelic therapy, like any other medical treatment, requires significant amounts of money for research, Ferriss recently tweeted his apprehension about a side effect of the growing money-generating psychedelic market.

'I am very concerned by the patent land grab warming up in the for-profit psychedelic world,” he wrote, asking publicly if there was any coalition of pro-bono lawyers who could intervene “when companies attempt to secure broad patents that could hinder scientific research, reasonable competition…and so on?'"

Psychedelics now appear in patent applications for Philip Morris e-cigarettes, periodontal disease, hair loss, weight loss, and food allergies.

"Of the 110,000 worldwide respondents to the 2020 Global Drug Survey, 6,500 (just under six percent) reported using recreational drugs as a DIY mental health treatment. These included cases of people microdosing alone with L*D or magic mushrooms, as well as cases where people took psychedelics under the supervision of another person in an unregulated setting. While these supervisors were most commonly reported as being friends and partners, the unregulated settings also included psychedelic retreats and so-called “traditional healing groups”."

The numbers indicate a growing movement of people unwilling to wait for L*D and psilocybin to be legalised.

"A total of 6,500 people completed the section of the survey concerning the use of psychedelics as a form of self-medication. Overall, L*D was the drug most commonly used to treat psychiatric disorders, followed by M**A and psilocybin. In the case of L*D, 13.4 percent of women claimed to have used the drug for therapeutic purposes, compared to 11.7 percent of men.

Meanwhile, 14.9 percent of women said they had used magic mushrooms in the past year to treat some form of psychiatric or emotional condition, compared to 12.4 percent of men."

Women are more likely than men to use L*D and magic mushrooms to treat psychiatric conditions and emotional distress, according to the results of the 2020

06/03/2021

"So, does the dose of a psychedelic compound have to be strong enough to cause hallucinations in order to have a therapeutic effect? The results of Szigeti et al. suggest that the answer to this question is yes. However, as in many other placebo-controlled trials, the participants in the latest study had to have previously used psychedelics. This may confound the results of the current study as the therapeutic effects of a single fully hallucinogenic dose can last for several years (Agin-Liebes et al., 2020)."

A citizen science approach to research has shown that the improvements in mood and cognition associated with psychedelic microdosing are likely due to a placebo effect.

"N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a psychedelic compound under investigation for a range of therapeutic uses. In many psychedelic studies, psychiatric conditions are targeted by dosing participants with hallucinogenic levels of tested compounds. Now, new avenues using sub-hallucinogenic doses are being explored. One of these avenues of research is being pursued by Algernon Pharmaceuticals, who are investigating whether these tiny DMT doses could help to protect and repair the brain in the hours after a stroke."

"The project, known as Psilocybin-Research Intervention with Motivation Enhancement (PRIME), was first announced in November and is scheduled to take place in Vancouver, and will include 30 participants who have been diagnosed with opioid, stimulant and/or alcohol use disorders. Numinus said in a news release that the protocol for the study has been finalized, with a structure that is consistent with established best practices for psilocybin-assisted treatment."

Numinus Wellness and global contract research organization Syreon Corp. announced this week that “significant progress” has been made on their compassionate access trial on the use of psilocybin-assisted motivational enhancement therapy to treat substance use disorders.

" . . . a new book, The Immortality Key, has opened up a fascinating discussion about the historical role of psychedelics in the Western world, going all the way back to ancient Greece. The best way I can describe it is to say it’s an old-fashioned detective story, like The Da Vinci Code, only it doesn’t suck and it’s about the little-known history of psychedelics and Christianity’s rise in the Greek world 2,000 years ago."

New evidence suggests a connection that can help us understand the emergence of Western religion.

As trained caregivers, chaplains could play an important role in the newly-emerging psychedelic landscape, providing guidance to those who may choose to incorporate the use of psychedelics into their own spiritual journeys. We could perhaps think about chaplains as psychedelic shepherds, directing users through the strange, yet potentially meaningful pastures of the mind and beyond to which these chemicals may provide access."

Harvard University’s Center for the Study of World Religions recently held a discussion titled “What is Psychedelic Chaplaincy?”, the purpose of which was to explore the role that spiritual caregivers might play among those seeking and undergoing psychedelic experiences. It’s a timely topic,...

"Psilocybin reform is an important development for at least two reasons. First, psilocybin is a promising compound that, if studied and used appropriately, can provide benefits to many. Second, psilocybin reform may spur a radical rethinking of the prohibition on other Schedule I substances, and can thus be a catalyst toward ending the racist and draconian War on Drugs."

The latest frontier in drug reform has been the loosening of legal restrictions on psilocybin—the psychoactive compound in “magic mushrooms.”

"A recent systematic review of 28 studies, conducted by Quebec researchers, found that while ketamine appears 'promising' for short-term treatment of treatment-resistant depression (TRD), "more clinical and experimental data is needed with regards to the efficacy, tolerance and security of long-term administration.'"

There is growing interest in the use of psychedelics to assist treatments for mental health conditions, but one expert warns that more robust research is needed.

“Our findings confirmed some of the beneficial psychological effects of microdosing from anecdotal reports and observational studies, such as improved sense of wellbeing and life satisfaction,” said Balázs Szigeti, the lead author and a research associate at Imperial’s Centre for Psychedelic Research.

“But we see the same improvements among participants taking placebos. This suggests that the improvements may not be due to the pharmacological action of the drug but can instead be explained by the placebo effect.”

"NeuroPerspective has released its March/April 2021 issue, featuring its first-ever, comprehensive review of the rapidly-expanding Psychedelic Therapeutics space, where substances formerly relegated to sacramental and/or illegal status are being formally tested as treatments for CNS disorders. Psilocybin, L*D, DMT, 5-MeO-DMT are some of the 'classic' psychedelic substances being explored, along with 'empathogens' like M**A, dissociative drugs like ketamine, esketamine, arketamine, and a few substances less easily categorized, like ibogaine and its derivatives."

"Rekert emphasizes that she does not suggest any particular types of drugs to the two to three clients she sees each month for integrative therapy, nor does she help them buy or ingest them.

'I just ask them to tell me what they're taking,' Rekert said.

Rekert carries a naloxone kit to administer in case her clients have ingested a drug that's been tainted with opioids. But she says she's never had to use it."

Due to growing demand for therapeutic psychedelic experiences — and a dearth of legitimate or accredited professionals to facilitate them — experts say there is a growing underground market for guides offering their services.

"Australia's high consumption of illegal designer drugs has been revealed in an international study which collected wastewater over the New Year period.

The study collected samples in eight countries, checking for new psychoactive substances, drugs designed to mimic the effects of established illicit drugs such as cannabis, ecstasy, co***ne and L*D.

The samples, which were shipped to Adelaide for analysis by the University of South Australia, revealed 16 different substances including the synthetic opioid, acetyl fentanyl and mephedrone, often referred to as drone, M-CAT, White Magic or meow meow.

Other substances included N-ethylpentylone, recently detected at music festivals in Australia, and a new substance called eutylone, known to be incorrectly sold as M**A."

While predominantly a proof-of-concept study, looking at the safety and tolerability of the drug for people with alcohol use disorder, the researchers were able to glean some early insights into the possible efficacy of M**A for alcohol addiction as well."

"For decades, the subject of children and psychedelics has been one of great contention. The mere thought of exposing children to mind-altering substances elicits substantial controversy in public opinion, often considered a “no-go zone.” Anything that concerns children and how to best care for them precipitates strong reactions because parents aim to safeguard their well-being and protect them from harm’s way. Nonetheless, after a long period of suppression, we now find ourselves in the midst of a psychedelic renaissance. As access to these substances continues to expand through legalization, decriminalization, and medicalization efforts alike, our conversation redefining the use of these substances should seek to holistically address the groups that interact with them, including children."

"The bill was opposed by the state Department of Health as well as county police departments.

State health officials said that while psilocybin might benefit mental health disorders, the circumstances for safe and effective administration aren't proven, and that the Health Department isn't the appropriate agency to set up treatment centers.

Police departments warned about the health risks of the psychedelic substances. Phillip Johnson, a major in the Honolulu Police Department's Narcotics and Vice Division, said mushrooms can cause cause both "terrifying hallucinations " as well as euphoria and sensory distortion."

Feb. 24—A bill that would decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms and require state health officials to develop treatment centers where people can consume their active ingredients in a controlled environment was shelved by state lawmakers Tuesday. But the push to decriminalize mushrooms is likely to g...
