Hi everyone, Richie here with my latest article. Thanks for your patience as I studied for the bar exam and went fairly silent for the last few months. Hopefully this analysis of definite articles and abstract yet countable nouns (and what they reveal about the nature and extent of our rights) makes up for it!

When reading, people tend to skip words and fill in the the gaps, especially when words are short and highly predictable. One of the the most common culprits of this effect is the the word “the,” resulting in a viral observation on the the internet that students might well double up their “the...

Hello all,

Sorry for the shortage of posts while I study for the bar exam.

In the meantime, enjoy this Twitter thread on the definition of conservatism and what it seeks to "conserve":

"wHaT hAvE yOu CoNsErVeD??"

At the time of the Founding (and since long before), supporters of small government and natural rights were called Liberals, as in devotees of liberty. This continued for at least 150 years.

For example:
Calvin Coolidge (considered among the most libertarian presidents) in 1925:

"It is for us to maintain in all good faith those LIBERAL institutions and traditions which have been so productive of good."

Note: "maintain in all good faith" is a decent synonym for "conserve."

Keep in mind, "Conservative" is a name that floats in and out of use, such as Northerners who opposed slavery but wanted to phase it out instead of abolishing it. But the primary movement of rights and individual liberty is consistently called Liberalism.

Cut to FDR, who wants to rebrand away from the term (pardon my French) "Progressive." So he calls himself a Liberal, liberally expanding the reach of govt.

Next, he dubs his opponents "Conservatives," because they're stuck in the past. Think Obama and "bitter clingers."

William F. Buckley, Barry Goldwater, and other members of the Conservative old guard took the appellation in stride, like early disciples embraced the epithet "Christian."

"Sure," they said. "We're Conservatives. We're here to conserve the philosophy of our Founders."

Modern Conservatism, coined by FDR and repurposed by Buckley, was about conserving the Declaration, the Constitution, and the self-evident truths they enshrined. I.e., the Liberal institutions Coolidge said we ought to maintain in all good faith.

So what are we conserving, or trying to conserve?

Liberalism. The Liberalism that for centuries aimed to preserve natural, negative, individual rights through a government limited in size and scope to "secure these rights."

Whatsoever is more than these cometh of Twitter.

Originally Published on The Federalist Society Blog In D.C. v. Heller (2008), the Supreme Court recognized an individual right under the Second Amendment “to keep and bear arms” within one’s home. In its upcoming term, the Court is slated to determine whether the Constitution protec…

Don't miss this month's article from Richie Angel, writing for The Federalist Society Blog!

Originally published on The Federalist Society Blog Since the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868, the Supreme Court has incrementally incorporated almost the entire Bill of Rights against the states. Scholars and jurists disagree, however, as to which provision of the amendme…

Now that the Trump presidency is over, here’s a look back with a few of the New Guards: How do you feel now that the Trump presidency is over? Jacob Hibbard: Exhausted. These last four years have felt like almost constant drama. Having to alternate between defending conservative principles from Pr...

Healing through Bipartisan Electoral College Reform

Here's an excerpt of Richie Angel's latest article with The Federalist Society on a reform that could help heal our tensions without requiring a constitutional amendment or violating the vision of the Founders. Link to the full article at the end of this sample.

Originally posted on The Federalist Society Blog The Electoral College, as outlined in Article II of the Constitution and the Twelfth Amendment, was designed by the Founders to prevent “tumult and disorder” in presidential elections, as well as “cabal, intrigue, and corruption.” The Fou…

The Best and Worst Strategies for the Top Presidential Tickets: Trump/Pence vs. Biden/Harris

Richie Angel doesn't have a horse in this presidential race, so here's what he would (and definitely wouldn't) do if he were in the shoes of the two major party candidates.

One of the nice things about not having a horse in the presidential race is that it grants me greater objectivity in evaluating what’s working and what’s not. But until recently, it was difficult to perform much election analysis without knowing the major variable of whom Joe Biden would select ...

What Vegans Teach Us about Abortion

Today, Richie Angel is not aiming for agreement but merely understanding. You may reject the premise and think it's nuts, weird, or wrong -- but is it really that hard to understand the argument?

Today, my goal is not to convince you to agree with me but to foster understanding. Too often, good people acting in good faith are vilified because they hold some view we find incorrect, illogical, or even immoral. The radical Left has increasingly shrunk the Overton window to label anything it dis...

The Left Won’t Let Us Come Together on Race (Even When the Right Wants To)

Whether it's about the horrific death of George Floyd, Confederate flags and statues, or Black Lives Matter, the Left won't let us come together -- even when we agree! -- because this split isn't about race to them but a fundamentally differing view of America. From Richie Angel, "We can’t play on the same team or even play the same game on opposing teams when all evidence suggests that the other side’s goal is to pop the ball, shoot the referee, and burn down the stadium."

According to numerous reports, many Atlanta police officers are walking off the job following the Fulton County District Attorney’s felony murder charge against Officer Garret Rolfe, who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks in a Wendy’s parking lot on Friday night. While resisting arrest for driving und...

Thank You, Veterans, for My Memories — But Most of All for Yours

(Post 2 of 2) We also thank the loved ones of our fallen warriors for their sacrifice, as well as veterans who have witnessed the loss of their brothers and sisters at arms.

Every Memorial Day, I walk through a nearby cemetery and pay respects to every fallen veteran I can find. I review the wars they fought in, how old they were when they fought, how old they were when they died, and which branch they represented. I take special care to honor veterans of Vietnam, due t...

Dear Veterans, Thanks for the Memories

Happy Memorial Day. As we commemorate this solemn day and thank the fallen for their sacrifice, we also thank every veteran who was ever willing to lay down their life for our freedom. (Post 1 of 2)

And to be fair, if Memorial Day is designed to honor those who have given their lives to the cause of freedom, I think that includes all veterans living or dead. Let me explain:…

The Irony of Common Good Conservatism’s Clash with Quarantine

In his latest, Richie Angel exposes the hypocrisy of "common good" conservatives who loudly oppose Covid-19 lockdowns despite advocating this exact government approach: any size, any action, as long as it's in pursuit of the common good.

Dear Matt Walsh, Josh Hammer, Michael Knowles, and the rest of the “Common Good” Conservatism delegation, You made your bed, now lie in it. Several months ago, warring tribes of conservatism continued their battle over the proper use of government force, this time by means of a proxy fight over ...

Postmodernism: The Left’s Artificial Opposition to Conservatism

Ever notice how some Leftists disagree with EVERYTHING you believe, even what you thought would be common ground? Richie Angel explains the two branches of Leftism and why that's no coincidence.

Common among the Right is the accusation that any given Leftist -- take Bernie Sanders, for instance -- never met a government program he didn’t love. The notion is simple enough: such a person is a progressive, someone who wants to expand the size and scope of government until it becomes a totali...

REBUTTAL to Matt Walsh: Why Conservatives Shouldn’t Ban P**n

Richie Angel doesn’t begrudge traditionalist conservatives their concern over a complicated issue like rampant po*******hy, but he readily calls out Walsh’s adoption of the exact progressive arguments he mocks for a living.

For the last week, Right-wing Twitter has waged civil war, with opposing conservative factions battling over whether the federal government can and should ban po*******hy on the internet, and if not, to what degree po*******hy may be regulated. Every schism between conservatives ultimately boils dow...

Groypers Don’t Really Want to Win

Groypers' white nationalist message won't push them ahead politically or culturally any time soon, so what are their true goals? Richie Angel explains in his latest.

I’m going to start with a disclaimer that may seem odd, but I hope you will understand my intent. As I will discuss, what Groypers want more than anything is attention, which I have given them merely by writing this article. To mitigate any unnecessary spotlight on this repulsive movement, I will ...

What Will It Take to Change Minds on Abortion?

Richie Angel said last year that pro-life advocates needed to change people's minds en masse. Here are a few suggestions how:

One year ago this month, I wrote about the pro-life film Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer. At the time, I said that if pro-life advocates ever had a hope of outlawing abortion, “people would need to start changing their minds en masse. If Gosnell can’t do that, I don’t k...

The “Erie” Way Judges Became Lawmakers

This was originally conceived as a Halloween article, so confound it, we're gonna repost it on Halloween. Happy Haunting!

Take a good look. This is comprehensive: As I’ve covered before, the Constitution does not grant the judiciary any lawmaking authority, and that includes the ability to overturn a law or declare one void -- no matter how unconstitutional. Ben Shapiro warns that if politicians try to mandate LGBTQ 'indoctrination' at all schools, violate his God given Constitutional rights, he has 2 choices, leave the country or pick up his gun. "Beto O'Rourke does not get to raise my child. And if he tries, I will meet him at the door with a gun"
