Afghanistan has notoriously become the world’s only country where girls are forbidden from attending secondary schools. Girls in Afghanistan now leave school at 12 and never return.

TODAY would have been the first day of school for children in Afghanistan, but the government is only allowing boys to be educated.

was filmed in Afghanistan over two years and tells the story of Zarifa Ghafari, who at 26, was one of the country’s youngest women to ever hold the position of mayor. The film documents her fight to survive and narrow escape against the backdrop of her nation’s accelerated unraveling.

Co-directed by Ayazi & Marcel Mettelsiefen, and produced alongside our partners at Propagate Content & Moondogs, IN HER HANDS is now available to stream on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/title/81521475

“We experienced freedoms & opportunities for the last 20 years, but everything changed. And now – I couldn’t imagine two years ago that this could happen to me, to Zarifa & so many other Afghan women – now, women are not able to go to work, become journalists… secondary girls are not able to go to school.”

- Co-Director Tamana Ayazi⁩ talking to Yalda Hakim on about the new realities facing women in Afghanistan.

This International Human Rights Day, we are thinking of the many Afghan girls & women who are still fighting for basic rights. Their stories, like those told in Tamana Ayazi & Marcel Mettelsiefen’s , are far too common. We need to do better.

As Western forces withdraw, Afghanistan's youngest female mayor braves mortal danger to lead a fight for education for the next generation of Afghans.

To celebrate the release of , AppleTV+ recently hosted a screening of the episode, “Gutsy Women Take Leaps,” at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

After viewing the episode, the audience was treated to a conversation moderated by the Little Rock School District Communications Director, Pamela Smith, exploring topics from the episode, including the tremendous courage it takes to be a changemaker, highlighting the progress made towards achieving racial and gender equity, and how we can continue to amplify the issues that persist today, while also celebrating the achievements of gutsy women, particularly in Arkansas, and empowering audience members to take action.

She was joined for the discussion by Minnijean Brown Trickey, (one of the Little Rock Nine, and also featured in the episode), Nancy Rousseau (Principal of Little Rock Central High School), Marquisa Wince (Founding Executive Director of Arkansas Appleseed Legal Justice Center) and Joanna Krause (Executive Director of Canopy NWA and also featured in the episode!).

Hillary Clinton: "Chelsea and I took a self-defense class, told stories at The Moth, worked wood at Refoundry, and learned how to make acorn soup—all with women fighting for justice.

While starring on Law & Order, Mariska Hargitay heard from thousands of survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. She realized that having someone bear witness to your story is the start of justice. It's why she founded Joyful Heart Foundation.

Katrina Brownlee survived and sought healing and justice by creating Young Ladies Of Our Future. A mentorship program for young, at-risk women, it focuses on self-esteem, self-awareness, and anti-violence.

Brittany K. Barnett sees the justice system from two angles: as a lawyer arguing for clemency for the unjustly sentenced & as the daughter of a formerly incarcerated mother. She created Girls Embracing Mothers to empower women in prison & their daughters to break the cycle & lead lives with vision.

Growing up, Kim Kardashian studied her father’s law books. While attending a clemency meeting at the White House, she decided to make a childhood dream a reality and become a lawyer. Now she champions criminal justice reform and uses her platform to fight for clemency.

Judge Abby Abinanti sat on the bench in San Francisco before pioneering a tribal justice system back home based on the values and culture of The Yurok Tribe. She established her tribe's Wellness Court to focus on repairing communities, not punishing people.

Hear these women’s stories and more in “Gutsy Women Seek Justice,” directed by Yu Gu, now streaming on AppleTV+. I hope you enjoy meeting them as much as we did."

Coming soon! 🎥 We are thrilled to co-produce ‘In The Shadow of Beirut” with Cyprus Avenue Films, Real Films, gebrueder beetz filmproduktion & Abbout Productions. It is a powerful story of resilience and hope in the face of hardship and uncertainty in modern-day Lebanon, as seen through the eyes of four families living in the impoverished neighborhoods of Beirut.

We look forward to completing work on this film and premiering it at a major international film festival before the end of 2022.
