NEW EPISODE OUT NOW

Listen to episode 117 w/ Jake from TX

We come into this profession with a belief of invincibility. That belief is strengthened from a sense of “groupthink” that we are somehow superheroes.

Unfortunately it also strengthens this misguided idea that we don’t need help nor should we ask for it.

Kyle R Wilson LODD (5/25/82 - 4/16/07)

From the Roll of Honor...
“Kyle did not hesitate to follow the truck officer into the house to help the occupants flee the fire. When the situation got out of hand‚ he fell back on his training and fought to the end. It is a tribute to Kyle’s spirit and dedication that he was able to do the right thing in the most difficult situation.”

Bryan Battenfeld was my guest for Episode 56. He discusses this fire, Kyle’s death, and his involvment.

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW

"Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times"

This is a huge part of the fire experience, military service, any team or crew that has to work hard to accomplish a goal.

That hard work and camaraderie brings a purpose and a focus to life.

Embrace it when you can and seek it out when it's missing.

EPISODE 112 Dropped Today!!

"Underestimate the Risk and Overestimate the Reward"

Does this sound like anyone you know?

Firefighters, nurses, paramedics, cops....as a whole we thrive on and in chaos. Add a lowered risk analysis because of our sleep patterns and that's a recipe for disaster.

Chronic sleep deprivation messes with our risk appetite. After just a few restless nights, our judgment falters.

Risks seem smaller, rewards seem bigger. It's a dangerous game that we more often than not see played out in our personal lives.

New Episode Out Today

Nightmares

Something many of us have experienced due to calls or trauma.

Whatever it is....a patient, a smell, a sight, a sound...they come back to visit us.

The nightmares can feel so real. Real enough that we react almost violently to the touch of a loved one despite their good intentions.

In Episode 109, out today, Zach discusses being falsely accused and court martialed in the Air Force, his traumatic calls involving pediatric patients, and the loss of a good friend to su***de.

One more shift and it’s a wrap. I’ve enjoyed one hell of a ride for the last ten or so years. The calls, the people, the camaraderie, the memories it’s all added up to an unforgettable experience.
It’s not all unicorns and rainbows but I would buy the ticket and take the ride all over again.
If you’re in the area next week and want to come hangout here’s the info…..

Yesterday was heat. Today was ice

Woke up with a racing mind and scattered brain. Change is on the horizon and with it comes all the emotion and feelings.

The body manifests what the brain is feeling. My body was tense, tight, and extremely unsettled.

Made a list of objectives for the day but sitting still was difficult enough let alone focusing on tasks.

A cold plunge in water just above freezing will snap you the f**k out of it. Forcing you to simply focus on the “misery” of the cold.

EPISODE 82 IS OUT NOW!!
Tom Mitchell

Pulling the good isn’t always easy.

Finding the positive in some of the worst situations can be a challenge. But it’s a necessary thing.

Be it a cancer diagnosis, running a code, losing a loved one, or just a rough shift….if you look hard enough it’s there.

Find the good and embrace it.

One of the best ways to bring awareness to Su***de Prevention Month is to bring you the voices who have been to that edge and thankfully stepped back.
I’ve spoken to and recorded with some of the bravest people I have met and known. Ordinary people like you and me but extraordinary in the fact they faced demons, stared them down, and chose to fight and live.
I’m thankful that they are still here to tell there stories and help change the stigma around mental health and asking for help.
If you’re struggling and contemplating su***de please reach out.

Find a friend, a loved one, a therapist, a coworker….or reach out to me.

I’ll listen.

They’ll listen.

“This isn’t about me anymore”

EPISODE 78 w/ Sara Thrash is out now

I’ll paraphrase a quote from a Battalion Chief….

“On the days I want to workout, I’m doing it for me. On the days I don’t want to or feel I can’t, I do it for them”

All cliches aside, our physical health is paramount. As humans and as First Responders we owe to ourselves, our families, and our crews to stay healthy….mentally and physically.

Do the work!

F**K CANCER

I realize that even that has grown cliched but it stands truer today than ever before. No person, no family, and especially no seven-month-old should have to deal with or battle this insidious disease. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what Baby Cal is facing. Cal was recently diagnosed with hepatoblastoma (a type of liver cancer). Doctors have tested, poked, and prodded over the last few weeks. If there can be a silver lining to this diagnosis it’s that it seems the cancer hasn’t spread. Cal started his treatment this week. He will endure a few rounds of chemo to shrink the tumor before having it surgically removed.

This battle is unbelievably tough especially when both parents work full time jobs. Aaron, a firefighter in my department, works 24-hour shifts. Aaron and Jordan also have two other children at home, Shepard aka Tank (3 yrs.) and Cal’s twin sister Emerson. This battle will not only consume their time and focus but will quickly add expenses to this young family’s lives. We can help ease that with donations to the GoFundMe. All proceeds will fund medical bills, gas, food, and all ancillary costs they incur.

Please consider donating and supporting my brother and his family. They can use all the love and support we can send their way.

"Then all of a sudden he says....yeah, it's cancer"

Words no one needs or deserves to hear.

Fact of the matter is, the system is rigged against us. Thankfully we have someone like in our corner. Her determination and spirit brought this issue to the forefront. Because of her the fire service is moving toward change. She's truly the hero non of us knew we needed.
