Happy International Women's Day!

Did you know that our two Great Armenians, Raffi and Khrimian Hayrig, both wrote about the importance of women in Armenian society? Khrimian also taught at a girl's school in Constantinople and wrote extensively about the importance of educating women.

Throwback to 1858! Raffi wrote this during his travels to Akhtamar where he witnessed firsthand how Western Armenians were living in the Ottoman Empire. The observations he made there would go on to color some of his most famous works, including The Fool, published in 1880.

It was a pleasure speaking to the bright students at Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School about our board books and the history of Armenian literacy and printing! We covered everything from the birth of Armenian text with St. Mesrob Mashdots, the intellectual and cultural golden age it kicked off, the importance of the Mkhitarists in continuing that literary renaissance, the contributions of Raffi and Khrimian and finally, their own role in continuing that legacy!

Khrimian Hayrik tried to teach us that Armenians need to use their strengths to their advantage. We wanted to use this as a way for you to talk to your little one about what they envision to be strengths today and how they can use them to become Great Armenians themselves. Let us know in the comments what ideas you and your child came up with!

If you've already received your books, you may have noticed that we've started to include cards with quotes from our Great Armenians. Each card is meant to give your little one just a little more to grab onto in order to understand these larger than life figures.

This quote was taken from Khrimian Hayrik's famous Iron Ladle Sermon. He delivered this sermon after returning from the Berlin Congress in 1878. It was then that he fully understood that petitions and supplications were not going to bring the Armenians any freedoms, land, dignity or rights. Instead, he realized that Armenians needed to rely on themselves and their own strength alone. This message sent reverberations throughout the Armenian world and is often credited with igniting the upcoming revolutionary movement.

That’s right! Raphael’s School of Athens, at the center of which is another famous teacher and student duo - Plato and Aristotle!

We included renditions of some of those pieces in the upcoming Khrimian board book because we want our little ones to learn about Khrimian from all different angles - art, literature, history and more.

One of our goals with the Great Armenians for Kids series is to show that each of these figures isn't alone. Each influenced the other in some way and created a chain. That chain has continued to grow and it's our little ones who will be tomorrow's next links.

Today marks the anniversary of the death of Khrimian Hayrik, the Eagle of Vaspurakan. There's a lot that can be said about this giant of a man (and we've tried many times to say it all), but this time we'll leave it to another great Armenian, the poet Siamanto who wrote:

All of our eyes full of service and devotion,

Again turn to you, again are devoted to you…

Rise to your feet oh majestic one, rise to your feet oh sweet father…

Bestir us again, inebriate us again, stimulate us again…

Rise to your feet, rise to your feet, oh torchbearer of thought and freedom…

I know that from the daybreak, the fiery ones will roar,

“Eagle, reveal again your ancient sword today.”

And from the foot of the mountain to the peak of bloody Ararat,

His obstinate restless breath will resound for eternity.
