I posted this last July. I'll miss this place!

Scene: Wash Tub Laundromat on Central. I'm washing a couple of bathroom rugs in the Mega machine, and I'm reading an old NEW YORKER to kill time.
Another customer enters, a woman in her late 60s or 70s. She looks like a street person-- bad teeth, worn clothes. She points to my magazine. "Y'know, Robert Gottlieb died a couple of days ago," she says.
Gottlieb was editor of the NEW YORKER a couple of decades ago.
"Yes, I heard."
"There's a great article about him in THE NEW YORK TIMES today," she says, and pulls it out of a laundry bag. "I'll let you read it if you promise to give it back. I read the TIMES every day."
I promise. We talk about the articles we most enjoy in the NEW YORKER.
"Some of them are too long, and I don't finish them," I confess.
"I like them long," she says.
I wish I'd asked her name. Taken her out for coffee. Maybe she'll be there the next time I have a Mega load.
