Peter Gabriel - i/o (2023)
After twelve long years, a long awaited new studio release from a musical icon Peter Gabriel finally came out. In a quirky turn of an event (something that is expected from Gabriel), most of the album came out over the course of the whole year. Releasing a brand new single every full moon, the long awaited album was already there before it was released. "i/o" delivers a huge portion of Gabriel's distinctive dose of experimental cuisine. While it's wonderful to see the great man being so creatively proactive again, the record comes out as a collection of overwhelmingly confusing tales and cryptic messages. This type of elitistic overindulgence can leave a dull impression for the listener, even for the fully invested fans. On a more positive side, Peter's voice sounds fresh and sharp as ever, and the production value is one of the finest in the world. The enthusiastic approach in recording are the double versions of each song (brighter and darker mix), a formula which sounds revolutionary which doesn't help the album whatsoever. After a bewildering album like this, the only thing left is to hope to see a more engaging the follow up as soon as possible.

Film director Rob Reiner has announced that the sequel to the iconic rock-mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap will start filming in February. Production will also collide with the 40th anniversary since the release of the original hit film. Dirty Honey - Can't Find The Breaks (2023)
In this day of age it's a moral responsibility to support up-and-coming bands, which draw inspirations from their famous classic rock counterparts. One of those bands to incorporate retro rock sound in their own creation, is a four piece from Los Angeles, Dirty Honey. Releasing their second album "Can't Find The Breaks", the group is still searching a way to establish themselves on the huge rock scene. Like so many American bands in the past three decades, Dirty Honey embraced the blues influence through an innovative machine called Led Zeppelin. While willingly accepting the sensual and erotic side of the Zeppelin, the aggressive side is often put aside. This is also the case with Honey's second record. Throughout the release you can hear the glimpses of Zeppelin music, the majority of melodies and song structure is more comparable to the Black Crowes. This comparison doesn't automatically mean that the record sounds bland or uninterested, it points out that you shouldn't expect fast and furious heavy blues songs. The level of musical maturity is well present, giving the harder tracks a satisfying edginess. Recruiting former Wolfmother keyboardist Ian Peres as a guest musician, turned out be a remarkably inspiring move. On the other hand when it comes to the softer side in the form of ballads, that's where the band doesn't shine so much. Sadly this is one of the reasons why the record doesn't feel focused all the way through. Hopefully we can expect even more adventurous releases from this prosperous group in the near future.

KISS CANCEL THIRD CONCERT IN A ROW

Edgar Broughton - Break The Dark (2023)
This release came as unthinkable surprise, which appeared literally out of thin air. In the late sixties Edgar Broughton alongside his brother Steve, formed an unusual band Edgar Broughton Band. In the wake of the birth of heavy rock with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, Broughton band pushed the doomy boundaries even further. Combining psychedelic themes with heavy, crunchy riffs, the band placed itself as one of the most influential underground British bands in the early seventies. Their raw, filthy and unforgiving approach caused a chain reaction which resulted in creating a whole new subgenre of rock, stoner rock. The exhausting rate of their long and flagrant style of improvising gathered only a small circle of loyal fans, which were not interested in the flower power movement. Right up to their break up in early eighties, Broughtons were regarded as the pivotal underdogs of the British rock scene of the seventies. Since the band's brief nostalgic reunion in 2006, all was quiet regarding the members and their musical careers until fairly recent. Since last year's passing of Steve Broughton, Edgar decided to reignite his career for a modern age. Like a sudden cardiac arrest, "Break The Dark" appeared, the first full blown record with original material after four decades. Just like in the late sixties, Edgar Broughton once again shocked the rock auditorium with a peculiar album. Filled with experimental undertones and esoteric mysticism, the album tries too hard to catch the lightning in the bottle. It's without a doubt a praiseworthy attempt to expand the musical horizons, the problem lies in the fact that this type of experiments is not suited for a stoner rock forefather. Especially the usage of strong electronic influence sounds so wrong, for some reason. Hopefully this sudden resurgence of an underground veteran, could inspire him to create some distinctive heavier albums in the years to come.

On Friday November 17th, Northern Irish heavy-blues The Answer will officially release their brand new single "Wild Heart". The single comes only eight months since the release of their comeback album "Sundowners".

The Rolling Stones - Hackney Diamonds (2023)
It's remarkable to witness a time machine effect in real lifetime, where within a month you can hear a brand new (lost) single from The Beatles and a full blown original record from their counterparts The Rolling Stones. Although the majority of the attention went to a nicely refurbished "Now And Then" thanks to Paul McCartney, on the other hand Stones have been teasing their new album for a while now. Back in September "Hackney Diamonds", was a announced as the long awaited new record from the Stones after almost two decades. Being a musical conglomerate as they are, every release is expected to be their finest work since the last one. Sadly, the reality is harsher and different. Not going too much back to the past, compared to 2005 "A Bigger Bang", the LP sounds plane and disinterested. All the songs feel mediocre and resemble a collection of unreleased outtakes and leftovers. For the most of the songs the current ongoing formula of inviting high class guest musicians was used, who's contribution is completely vague and doesn't help the tracks in any way. Some would argue that frontmen are in their ninth decade and that their musical prime has passed. This debatable argument falls completely flat when we look back at their 2012 single "Doom And Gloom", which in every way outshines this complete new release. Thankfully some positives can be found in "Hackney Diamonds". Guest appearance from the original bassist Bill Wyman, who plays on a track recorded with the late Charlie Watts, is by far the most historic moment on the album. The other one would unimaginable a half of century ago, to hear Sir Paul McCartney playing bass on a Stones track. Ironically, musical perfection can be seen on the final track. Jagger and Richards recorded an acoustic rendition of the Muddy Waters classic "Rolling Stone Blues", a song that was responsible for the name of the band. Only this track reflects the greatness of the Stones, who conquered the planet in the late sixties.
