Please check out my blog post about my book Blues Discovery: Reaching Across the Divide. I wrote this book in the 1990s and am reissuing it now through Dost Publishing.

Blues Discovery: Reaching Across the Divide (Revised Edition, Dost Publishing, 2023) In 1994 I decided that I just couldn't take any more of what I was doing. I had begun graduate programs in Islamic History, Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society, and Modern European Intellectual History, int...

I've modified the text of the kindle version of Wallis Budge. The font can now be made larger or smaller, based on your needs, and there is now a linked table of contents. An update was sent to everyone who bought the kindle version.

When I was eight years old, going on nine, I broke my leg badly while playing in the graveyard in Hiram, Ohio. (See my previous post!) And while you might not think it likely, after the initial shock, blood and gore, having a broken leg wasn't an entirely bad experience. I stayed home for a few mont...

David Driemiller, "Morning sun burns off the fog over the knoll," Fairview Cemetery, Hiram, Ohio (Forlornphotos.com) It must have been on Friday, October 8th, 1971 that I broke my leg in the graveyard in the village of Hiram, Ohio--which sounds a bit Gothic, I know, but be patient... I was eight yea...

Please read my blog post about purging my book collection before I left the United States...

I recently purged most of my belongings. A few boxes to a storage unit, but other than that, I purged it all. I was at the end of a financial commitment related to a former marriage and at the end of a career in academic libraries of twenty-some years (which included twelve years overseas). Once the...

Wallis Budge: Magic and Mummies in London and Cairo (Rev. Ed, 2021), was researched and written with readers in mind. I wrote Wallis Budge, not to satisfy the requirements for tenure or promotion, but for the thrill of discovery and the joy of writing. The style and mood of the book is novelistic, a...

When people see a name such as "Sir E. A. Wallis Budge," they often assume that a man with a knighthood must have come from a privileged background--and probably from the home counties.

In Budge's case, nothing could be further from the truth. As a Cornishman from a family firmly rooted in the rural laboring poor, Budge had a long way to go from Bodmin to London. Please read on for a quick glance at Budge's Cornish background:

When people read that E. A. Wallis Budge was born as the illegitimate son of a country girl in Bodin, Cornwall, in 1857 they don't necessarily know what this birthplace suggests about his background. What were Bodmin and Cornwall like? Here's a quick glance... Cornwall is the English county most rem...

The product of extensive archival research in the British Museum and British Library, Wallis Budge: Magic and Mummies in London and Cairo (Rev. Ed., 2021) is the remarkable rags-to-riches story of the great Egyptologist, writer, and adventurer, Sir E. A. Wallis Budge.

The estimable Geoffrey Clarfield recently published an article on my book Wallis Budge: Magic and Mummies in London and Cairo (Revised edition, 2021). of-the-realm-the-spectacular-success-story-of-sir-ernest-wallis-budge I am very grateful to Geoffrey, who is a fine writer and African traveler who understands a man like Budge very well, for taking the time to read my book so carefully and understanding my own approach so easily. "Ismail has mastered the literature on Budge and he tells his story effortlessly and in a writing style that evokes and mirrors the rhythm of the time that Budge lived in, the late nineteenth century, when long, detailed books, newspaper, and journal articles were the respected currency of the educated classes, a time before the tyranny of pictures."

Thanks very much, Geoffrey!
