Frontera Free Press co-founder, Pete Ramirez, receiving the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
“The last year has been so hard on all of us,” Ramirez said. “I’m happy and grateful to have received one of these modern-day miracles of medicine.”
The U.S. is now averaging more than 2 million vaccinations per day and 18% of Americans have received at least one dose.
Experts say we need to reach 70-80% vaccination in the population to hit herd immunity.

“Take what you need, leave what you can,” said Mykayla Schultz, 10, who, along with her sister Musette, 11, created the first registered Little Free Pantry in the Rio Grande Valley.
Last summer, the long-time Girl Scouts began stocking a cabinet-sized pantry their father helped them build that is posted along the curb of their home.
“It almost looks like a birdhouse, but it’s a pantry for food,” said Mykayla.
Their pantry, dubbed Schultz Shenanigans, is free to the public and is located at 9801 Las Palmas Dr., McAllen, TX 78504.
The Schultz’s have joined an effort that has spread across the country, where good Samaritans create community-run pantries to help their neighbors in need.

The Pharr Police Department, led by Chief Andy Harvey, is the first department in the Rio Grande Valley to reform its approach toward possession of ma*****na offenses and also establish a Mental Health Task Force.
“It just takes someone to kind of lead the way, you know?” Harvey said.
The new ma*****na policy, known as cite and release, was rolled out by Chief Harvey in November 2020 with the help of District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez and Municipal Judge Rodolfo Martinez.
The DA also partnered with the police department and Tropical Behavioral Health Center to create the Mental Health Task Force, which was announced in December 2020.
The task force is made up of 20 officers who are trained to interact with individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
According to Harvey, these changes will help his officers build community trust, avoid wasting resources on low-level drug offenses, and hopefully, decrease encounters that require the use of force.
“We should be policing in a way that is progressive,” Harvey said.

The internet and social media have enabled the world to access unlimited information delivered to the palms of our hands within seconds via our mobile devices. But this digital Pandora’s box has led to widespread misinformation and disinformation.
As President Donald Trump continues to falsely claim victory in November’s presidential election and we witness the long-awaited rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines, disinformation is at an all-time high.
According to a recent report by Axios, NewsGuard Technologies, a service that uses trained journalists to rate thousands of news websites, has found that unreliable news websites have seen a significant increase in engagement on social media this year.
Now, more than ever, political science experts say it is essential that we better understand the content we’re interacting with on social media so we can reliably know what is true and what is not. The term “fake news” gets thrown around carelessly and, although it can correctly be used to describe both disinformation and misinformation, it doesn’t help us distinguish between the two.

The Rio Grande Valley has begun to distribute COVID-19 vaccines and we interviewed a handful of healthcare professionals who received a vaccination during this first wave.
Of the eight people surveyed, three received the Moderna vaccine and five received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The majority of people in our sampling were in their 30s and one was in his mid-60s. All but two live and work in the Rio Grande Valley and those two are Valley natives who have transplanted to other parts of the country.

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a recession across the nation’s economic sectors which has left countless Americans without a source of income. High unemployment rates along with long-delayed government action in response to this public health emergency have caused millions of people to become food insecure.
The Rio Grande Valley is no exception to the wave of hunger that has swept the nation and has seen its share of the long lines of cars waiting for boxes of food at pop-up distribution locations.
For many residents of the Valley, the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley has been their salvation. However, according to a recent report from The Texas Tribune, due to projected revenue shortfalls, Governor Greg Abbott has directed specific state agencies to prepare a 5% cut in spending which threatens to leave food banks across the state with a shortage of food in the next three months.
