Vermont's Local Banquet Magazine An online magazine devoted to covering local food, sustainable farming, and the many people building It is also available by subscription.

Vermont’s Local Banquet is a quarterly magazine that illuminates the connections between local food and Vermont communities. Our stories, interviews, and essays reveal how Vermont residents are building their local food systems, how farmers are faring in a time of great opportunity and challenge, and how Vermont’s agricultural landscape is changing as the localvore movement shapes what is grown an

d raised here. In short, we offer a bird’s eye view of the transformations taking place on farms, within communities, and inside people’s kitchens and gardens throughout the state. Each issue of Local Banquet features original writing by Vermont farmers, stories about tasty local food products, and recipes involving unusual Vermont crops. Other stories may focus on foraging, gardening, or do-it-yourself challenges that can take one's local food participation to a new level. Readers are encouraged to become an active part of the magazine by sending in their own food writing, art, or photography for publication. Local Banquet is a 100% local operation—edited, published, and printed in Vermont. The magazine is free and distributed to sites throughout the state.

There are so many great options for ordering local food online, ordering food from restaurants that partner with local farmers, taking virtual farm tours, connecting with local food WITHOUT coming within 6 feet of other humans (also, wash your hands). Unfortunately we're not posting about them because LB is being run by somebody with a day job in health care policy, and in particular telehealth policy, and that means there are zero minutes available in the day right now. If you want a website tracking telehealth developments, I've totally got you covered - otherwise I'm afraid LB is silent for the moment! But don't take the silence as a sign that there aren't great options for continuing to connect with local food even as we all stay apart. Go ahead and post anything you have particularly enjoyed in the comments. Thank you!

Maple Open House Weekend 2020 is Cancelled

We've made the decision to cancel Maple Open House Weekend this year to help prevent the further spread of COVID-19, or the Coronavirus. Our goal is to ensure that we're not creating an opportunity for further spread of the virus, and keeping prevention in the forefront of our decisions.

There are so many ways to celebrate maple, even in a year without Maple Open House Weekend! We've been hearing from sugar makers across the state that their season is off to a great start! North in Derby and further south in Shaftsbury, we're hearing stories of great flows of maple sap into sugar houses.

Call your favorite sugar maker and see if they're open to guests. Support your Vermont sugar makers by purchasing their syrup and other maple products - some have robust online sites and you can find those on our website. Others might be willing to mail you just what you're looking for, so reach out and ask. There's no time like the present for maple lovers to stock up on a gallon or two of syrup or some specialty products!

Beyond Maple Open House Weekend, we have plans in the works (in partnership with Vermont's Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets) to create a new fall Maple Celebration, just at the time when our state is showing off much of her natural beauty. We haven't worked out all of the specifics yet, but be ready to enjoy this year's Vermont Maple crop right into the fall!

It's shaping up to be a great season, with lots of sap currently running, and plenty of ways to enjoy the bounty of the season. Celebrate Vermont Maple and visit our recipes page for some new ideas!

Vermont’s Local Banquet

Since 2007, Vermont’s Local Banquet has offered a platform for writers interested in exploring Vermont’s local agriculture and our role in a global conversation about sustainable approaches to food production.

Our stories, interviews, and essays reveal how Vermont residents are building their local food systems, how farmers are faring in a time of great opportunity and challenge, and how Vermont’s agricultural landscape connects to larger questions of sustainability and the future of our food supply.
