🤎 It’s Black Maternal Mental Health Week — and we need to talk.

Black birthing people are 2-3x more likely to experience maternal mental health conditions and less likely to receive the support they need. This week shines a light on the emotional and mental load too often carried in silence.

Green Flags While Breastfeeding

Let’s normalize what going well can look like in your feeding journey.
✅ Baby has plenty of wet + dirty diapers
✅ Latch feels comfortable (no toe-curling pain)
✅ You hear swallowing sounds during feeds
✅ Baby is gaining weight and seems content after nursing
✅ Your breasts feel softer after feeds

These are signs your body and baby are working together beautifully — but remember, every journey is unique. If something feels off, trust your instincts and reach out for support.

You deserve to feel confident and supported, whether you’re nursing, pumping, combo feeding or figuring it all out.

“Not Just a Headache: What You Should Know About Preeclampsia”

You expect swelling. You expect fatigue.
But when that headache won’t go away… when your hands puff up overnight… when your vision gets blurry…
It might not be “just part of pregnancy.”

Preeclampsia can show up suddenly and affect anyone — especially in the third trimester. And for Black and Brown mothers, the risk is significantly higher.

At Hatch + Nest, we don’t ignore symptoms. We investigate them. Because your safety depends on being heard the first time you speak up.

Know the red flags:
🚨 Persistent headaches
🚨 Sudden swelling in face or hands
🚨 Blurry vision or seeing spots
🚨 Upper abdominal pain

💬 DM us if you’re unsure or need someone to talk to. We’ll listen, and we’ll help. You deserve informed, inclusive care.

"I did everything right. Read the books. Took the classes. Downloaded the apps. So why do I feel so completely unprepared?"

This confession from a client perfectly captures what we hear from nearly every first-time mom who walks through our doors.

When we asked our community what blindsided them most about new motherhood:

🐣 The breastfeeding journey rarely matches the serene images in parenting magazines. The midnight struggles, the painful latches, the conflicting advice from every direction.

🐣 Birth advocacy becomes critical in vulnerable moments. When you're contracting every two minutes, having someone who knows your wishes and can speak for you becomes invaluable.

🐣 The postpartum period hits like a tsunami – physically, emotionally, and logistically. The intensity and demand for support takes many new parents by surprise.

🐣 The identity shift from woman to mother happens overnight, but processing it takes months. This transformation deserves space, support, and understanding.

At Hatch & Nest, we support both births and the entire transformation into motherhood. Our doulas help bridge the gap between what you expected and what you experience, making sure you never navigate those waters alone.

“You’re Doing More Than They Know — And We See You”

The cards say “Happy Mother’s Day.” But sometimes, it’s not all smiles and snuggles.
It’s healing while holding. Crying while feeding. Feeling stretched thin and wondering, “Am I doing this right?”

We see you — the mother up at 3 AM googling, “Is this normal?”
The one pushing through exhaustion to show up for everyone.
The one trying to remember who she is underneath the role of “Mom.”

Mother’s Day can be joyful, yes. But it can also feel lonely, invisible, and raw.
This year, we want you to know: You are not alone.

At Hatch + Nest, we’re here for all the parts of motherhood — not just the polished ones. We believe care should meet you in your real, messy, beautiful moments. Whether it’s newborn chaos or deep postpartum healing, you deserve to feel seen, heard, and supported.

💕 This Mother’s Day, we’re not here for perfection. We’re here for you.

Need someone to walk with you through it all? DM us. We’re ready when you are.

Many first-time parents focus on the moment they’ll meet their baby, but birth is actually an amazing journey through four distinct stages.

Let’s break them down so you know what to expect!

Stage 1: Early Labor ✨
Your body begins its incredible work as your cervix softens and starts to dilate. This is often the longest stage, giving you time to settle into your labor rhythm.

& Active Labor 💪
Things intensify as contractions become stronger and more frequent. Your cervix continues dilating to 6-7 centimeters and beyond. This is when many parents say, “Okay, now we’re really doing this!”

Stage 2: Pushing 👶
Your baby is positioned head down and ready to make their entrance! This stage can be minutes or hours - every birth has its own timeline.

Stage 3: Delivering the Placenta 🌸
Surprise! Labor isn’t quite over when baby arrives. Your placenta (still attached to baby) needs to be delivered, which can take up to a couple hours. You have options here, like delayed cord clamping, before that final snip marks the end of your birth journey.

At Hatch and Nest, we walk through each stage with our families, answering questions and exploring options.

Have questions about what happens during each stage? Drop them in the comments - other mamas might be wondering the same thing!

Want to dive deeper into birth preparation? DM me and let’s get you feeling confident about every step of your journey. 💕
