IGP COMMENDS EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE OF OFFICERS, CHARGES SENIOR OFFICERS TO HONOUR PROFESSIONALISM.

• As IGP Reiterates Better Condition of Service

The Inspector-General of Police has charged Senior Police Officers to always commend their personnel who have exemplarily excelled in their duties, which have in turn impacted positively on the goodwill and image of the Nigeria Police Force.

The IGP made the charge while commending the exemplary performances of some officers and men across the State Commands, particularly Sergeant Sampson Ekikere, attached to 22 Police Mobile Force, Ikeja, Lagos, for his uncommon professionalism exhibited on Saturday, 19th March, 2022, when he painstakingly recovered a wallet, belonging to one Mr. Lukman Abaja, and traced the owner to deliver the found item. He equally commended Sergeant Yahaya Ahmed attached to Higher Shari’ah Court, Tudun Wada Division, Gusau, Zamfara State, for rejecting the sum of N300, 000 bribe, offered to him by one Chukwuka Jude, who was arrested at the same court on 18th January, 2022 for the offence of false presentation and cheating by impersonation.

Also commended was CSP Elemide Akinkunmi Bishop who was Head of Operations at the Police Radio. CSP Bishop was mistakenly credited with the sum of N600,000 into his Police Account. The officer withdrew the sum and remitted it back to the Nigeria Police Cooperative Society treasury, showing attributes of an honest and trustworthy police officer.

IGP Usman Alkali Baba, however, assures the entire Police workforce of sustainable efforts in improving their condition of service with a view to making life meaningful to them and having the Nigeria Police Force of our choice.

WE HAVE SUSPENDED EDO PCRC CHAIRMAN FOR WEARING POLICE UNIFORM, ACCOUTREMENTS … Ag. FPRO

• As IGP Decries indiscriminate use, sales of Police uniform

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the immediate and indefinite suspension of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Chairperson for the Edo State Police Command, Mrs. Helen Atekha Odemwingie. The Force equally decried the illegal use of police uniforms, kits and accoutrements by non-police individuals and groups.

The suspension is coming on the heels of a trending picture of the PCRC chairperson and other members at a function held at the Edo State Police Command wherein the PCRC members were seen wearing black uniforms similar to that of the Nigeria Police Force, with accompanying insignias and various inscriptions. It has been noted that the act contravenes the provisions of section 214{1} of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and section 101 of the Police Act, 2020.

In line with the extant law, the IGP hereby warns that henceforth, any individual who adorns themselves illegally in police uniforms, would be made to face the full wrath of the law. Similarly, the IGP has ordered the police disciplinary units particularly the Force Provost Marshal, the IGP X-Squad and Monitoring Unit to clampdown on persons who engage in the illegal sales of police uniforms, kits and accoutrements, outside of police approved stores and the office of the Quartermaster.

In the same vein, the Inspector-General of Police has further directed the Force Public Relations Officer to meet and collaborate with members of the Guild of Actors in Nigeria to improve partnership to ensure proper use of police uniforms, kits and accoutrements in their movies/skits.

*PRESS BRIEFING BY THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE CP ECHENG ECHENG ON 16TH MARCH 2022*

Good Morning, Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to this important briefing.

Many of you are aware of the menace of cultism in the State particularly in Awka and environs. You will recall that on 14th December, 2021, Cultists attacked the Chairman of Tricycle Owners Association in broad day light near Unizik junction. Two Police Officers who were in the vicinity were killed and their weapons two AK 47 rifles carted away.

Again on 26th February, 2022 the same cultist gang attacked a funeral ceremony at Ebenebe in Awka North LGA killing several mourners.

These serious incidents motivated the Command in going the extra mile in intelligence gathering and discreet investigation.

In the past two weeks several members of the gang were arrested by Police Operatives working in synergy with important stakeholders in the security sector.

On Tuesday 15th March, 2022 information was received that the same cult group had launched an attack on Unizik vigilante group at miracle junction, ifite, Awka. Police Operatives were mobilized to lay ambush for the gang as they fled from the scene. The effort pays off as the Police succeeded in demobilizing the gang and recovering a cache of weapons which included the two AK-47 rifles earlier stolen from the two Policemen murdered on 14th December, 2021. The following are the weapons and other items recovered; two Ak47, three pump actions guns, three locally made beretta pistols, one locally made Chief recover pistol, Nine Ak-47 magazine, two battle axes, assorted ammunition for the fi****ms above and the Mercedes Benz V-Booth reg. The leader of the gang, one Uchenna Nwobu a.k.a Anali was killed while the other gang member was arrested.

Investigation is ongoing aimed at tracking down other members of the gang and establishing the rightful owner of the recovered car.

We have also taken note of the grievous act of jungle justice in the trending video of the clash between the cultists and a local vigilante group. We condemn the barbaric act. Investigation will unravel identities of perpetrators and they will be brought to justice.

We wish to advise all those involved in providing protection for our communities to refrain from resort to self help. One crime cannot be the cure for other crimes. On our part we shall continue to uphold the public trust. We shall continue to partner with all well-meaning stakeholders to improve public safety and state security

I want to use this opportunity to update you on the video that recently trended where a lady was indecently assaulted and publicly disgraced over alleged incident of causing her husband’s death.

The Command operatives have arrested a total of six additional suspects including a native doctor who were Identified during the study of the video by police operatives. The AIG also expressed displeasure with the continued violation of the approved dress codes by officers at their different duty posts.

POLICE WOMEN DRESS CODE: ADOPTED, APPROVED IN LINE WITH INTERNATIONAL BEST PRACTICES

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc, has approved a new and improved dress code for Women Officers which permits them to wear stud earrings, and headscarf under their berets or peak caps as the case may be while in uniform. The dress code was unveiled at the IGP’s meeting with Strategic Police Managers on March 3, 2022.

The IGP noted that the Nigeria Police workforce has officers from every local government in the country with a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds, and an increased inclusion of female folks. This therefore brings the need to guarantee inclusion, gender mainstreaming, ethnic and religious diversity in the work place for optimum output and professionalism. This has informed the improvement for effective global workforce diversity management. Other countries that have adopted same dress code include Canada, the United States of America, Sweden, Turkey, Australia and the United Kingdom amongst others.

The dress code is optional and Senior Women Police Officers have been tasked by the IGP to ensure compliance with the approved standard for women police officers who have opted to adopt the dress code.

The Inspector-General of Police noted that this development, which is in line with international best practices addresses the growing concern for gender mainstreaming and respect for culture and diversity.

We work 24 hours, all through the holiday Season to keep people safe. Everyday, you likely pass Police Officers on beat, discharging their legal duties or going about their daily business without saying a simple "Thank you". Saying a simple "Thank you for your service to humanity" can be be a remarkable way to show the Officer that you respect and appreciate what he or she is doing for the society.

If you have had a good experience or when you have one with an Officer, spreading that experience online or in person can do a great service to the person in maintaining the tempo and otherwise. Speaking well of the individual is also a gesture of gratitude, one that is very impactful.

Daily intensity of policing can take a toll emotionally or physically. We work day in....day out...24hrs....7days a week and 365 days a year. We are not perfect being, we are human trying to do the best we can in upholding our legitimate duties.

- Pledges improved service delivery in 2022

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc has ordered Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the thirty-six (36) States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja as well as their supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), to initiate and implement well-coordinated crime prevention strategies and ensure round-the-clock visibility patrols towards peaceful Christmas and New Year celebrations in the country.

The IGP, who noted that achieving a crime and crisis free Yuletide is of utmost priority to the Force and the nation at large, being the build-up into a new year, assured citizens of adequate security throughout the period of the celebration and beyond. He further noted that the AIGs and CPs have been directed to massively deploy human, intelligence and other operational assets of the Force at their disposal to all public places including residential areas, places of worship, recreational centres, financial institutions, market places, motor-parks, major highways, airports, railway stations, amongst others, to protect the citizens and critical national infrastructure (CNI).

In addition, the IGP has warned Police personnel deployed for duties during the yuletide season, particularly those deployed to secure the highways across the country, to desist from acts inimical to discipline and professionalism. The IGP equally enjoined citizens to cooperate with officers deployed for the assignments especially by being law abiding, noting that the Force remains sensitive to issues of rights violations, illegitimate use of force and has since deployed the Monitoring Unit, the X-Squad, and the Force Provost Unit on joint operation nationwide with a view to monitoring conducts of officers as citizens transit in and around the country during the festive season and holidays.

While congratulating Christians in the country on the occasion of the 2021 celebration of the birth of Christ, the IGP thanked all Nigerians for supporting the Police and the security community in the fight against crimes and criminality. He enjoined citizens to go about the celebration in the spirit of love, sacrifice and to take protective measures to reduce exposure to security risks and the new wave of the COVID-19 variant. He further emphasized that citizens should keep Police emergency phone lines handy or contact the nearest Police station in the event of any untoward situation that may pose threats to public peace, safety and security.

The IGP, on behalf of the Force Management Team and entire officers of the Force, wishes Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. He assured citizens of improved service delivery in the coming year, 2022.
