YOU ARE THE MASTER OF YOUR FATE!
Our guest this month is the incredible Faith Opiyo who has proven time and again that she is the master of her own fate, against all odds!
Born and raised in Kenya, Faith’s journey has taken her to Russia, where she studied and lived for 10 years, through several career pivots in technology and all the way to being one of the few black women in cybersecurity. In this conversation amongst other things, we talked about Faith’s experiences with racism as a black person living in Russia, the challenges of being a black woman in tech and how she continues to face and fight impostor syndrome in her journey. Besides her job, Faith is part of a trio of women co-hosting the podcast, Out of Band, where they are making careers in cyber security accessible for all through showcasing different professionals in their space. Faith has faced a lot in her journey but has grown to use her voice more and continues to go after what she wants against all odds.

One of the biggest lessons in my purpose journey has been to unlearn the limited view of success that we all were socialised into of aspiring to become one thing in your life. People define themselves with their job for the rest of their lives. I carried the dream of being a C suite executive for so long because I thought that is only when I will have the impact I aspire to have. I have since shifted my mindset from that. ⠀

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON!
Inspired by the incredible story of my guest for this month, Busi Sizani @yesthatbusi, who knew her purpose from such a tender age, in this episode I reflect on my own purpose journey.
I am passionate about equity and I spend my time thinking about how to make the world a fairer place where systematically excluded groups, in particular women and people of color can also have their dreams. My career in healthcare is about that and so are all the different entrepreneurial activities I work on.
However unlike Busi I only came to know my purpose quite recently and having clarity on it has resulted in a huge mindset shift for me. I used to be so frustrated with how slow my career growth has been, but now I have embraced my own journey and got to realise everything happens for a reason. I stopped comparing myself with others and most of all, having clarity on my purpose has helped me realise, while I still carry corporate leadership dreams, I am not in a hurry to get to the top. This is because, with my different entrepreneurial ventures, I am living out NOW the impact I thought I would only have at the top!
Thank you Busi for inspiring this reflection.

Our guest this month, Busi Sizani is an incredible Diversity, Equity and Inclusion professional who believes inclusion should be in the DNA of every company, no matter what context they are in. Especially companies formed by minorities, it is easy for us to assume we do not need this because we already do what we do in this context. It is on us to also examine our biases so we do not perpetuate the same behaviours that inspired our own goals. ⠀
⠀
Sound on for Busi’s incredible advice on this to a company like BsquaredC. ⠀

High on my recommendation list is the "I am Remarkable Workshop" from Google. This workshop is empowering women and other underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond, in other words, It boosts your confidence in yourself. I loved it for the incredible people I met and especially seeing them transform from not being sure of themselves to realising just how badass they really are! ⠀

TO ENGAGE OR NOT TO ENGAGE, THAT IS THE QUESTION! ⠀
⠀
Have you listened to BsquaredC podcast this week? Our guest, Stephanie and I mused about the call to educate we are constantly getting as women of colour in predominantly white spaces. When you are the only one of you, it is taxing to represent the whole race every single time. It should not always be on us to educate people around us on our oppression. This is when white allies are needed and also google is free y’all! Let’s all do the work. ⠀

IT’S THE CONFIDENCE FOR US!
Our guest this month is the lovely Stephanie Goseine, a woman with so much audacity when it comes to her goals and her place in the corporate world as a woman of color. An island girl from Trinidad and Tobago, Stephanie has navigated her career from engineering to consulting and currently, she is making moves in change management. Amongst the many gems in this conversation included identity politics of mixed-heritage people like Stephanie and picking your battles when it comes to inclusion and diversity conversations as a WOC. Above all Stephanie is emboldened to take up space, something that she and a lot of WOC do not grow up believing in! She strongly believes she deserves success as much as the next person and her story and how she continues to do this, will ignite a fire in you to believe in your right to your dreams as well!
