I AM TAKING A BREAK…

I have had a rough start to the year complete with corona and a mental breakdown 😔.

Particularly my mental breakdown enlightened me to how physically and emotionally exhausted I am. I wrote a piece to share my most recent experiences in my mental health journey and you can read it on the . Swipe▶️ for my key lessons from this experience.

What have I learnt from it?

Amongst other things, a lot of people are in crisis mentally because as humanity we are taking quite a beating in these last few years; from a pandemic to wars and much more. I also learnt that as a black woman, this mental health crisis may look different on me because I have worn resilience like a badge of honor for most of my life. Additionally I have always had a cause and I carry a huge sense of responsibility for the world and I have always poured into others. But now my cup in empty. I need to stop, put down the weight of the world from my shoulders and replenish my cup.

My mental health crisis has forced me to examine my life closely, and just take a breather. For the first time ever, I want to be JUST A BLACK GIRL LIVING HER LIFE! At least for a while…

What does this mean for ?

I am pausing my content creation on for a while until further notice. You can still listen to all 50+ episodes that are there already on Spotify, apple podcasts or wherever you listen to your podcast!

This podcast has been a blessing in many ways. It has grown me as a story teller and has helped me connect with people around the world. It has also been a great source of inspiration to others with now over 6k downloads of the pod🙌🏾❤️.

I know I still want to do it, I just need to realign my energy and most of all, I need to rest!

Til next time friends!

Happy new year everyone! As we gear up for the new year on the BsquaredC platform, it is good moment to throw back to this important conversation that happened sometime last year.

In an Ask me Anything stories session last year, there was a great question on how I want allies to engage with BsquaredC content.

BsquaredC is a space I am building especially for black women because you seldom hear our stories and experiences in the corporate world, as the career advice space is dominated by the voices of white women. Additionally you seldom hear from those of us in the trenches of our career i.e. in middle management, as the career advice space is dominated by executives. I will continue to center black women on this platform but everyone else is welcome to listen, engage and share the work. The stories and lessons shared by BsquaredC guests are not only useful for everyone’s career journey, but also to how you treat the black women in your professional and personal lives.

Swipe ▶️ for more on how allies can engage with BsquaredC content!

Impostor syndrome is not an individual flaw!It is a systemic issue.

In the last episode of the year I am talking about my top 3 momentous reflections from the podcast in 2021 and the mantras we are carrying into 2022 with us!

In episode 17 we talked about rethinking impostor syndrome. For a long time this issue has been treated as an individual problem and the industry is dedicated to strategies to combat this. However these are all bandaid solutions that do not address the root cause of this issue. Impostor syndrome occurs because of repeated exposure to systemic bias, which is rife in most institutions like the corporate world. We need to fight more to create psychologically safe environments that.

Mantra 2: OWN YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In the last episode of the year I am talking about my top 3 momentous reflections from the podcast in 2021 and the mantras I am carrying into 2022 from them!

In episode 13 we talked about confidence and the tight rope of perception that women of color are often walking on this topic. The same behavior coming from a man is not treated the same when coming from a woman, let alone a woman of color. One of the best ways to stay grounded in your confidence is to base it on facts! Shonda Rhimes said it best, IT'S NOT BRAGGING, IF IT'S FACTS!

This month’s reflection on BsquaredC podcast we are talking about rethinking impostor syndrome.
In February 2021, Harvard Business Review published this article, provocatively entitled, Stop Telling Women They Have Impostor Syndrome by Ruchika Tulshyan and Jodi Ann
Burey. It outlines what has been missing in the impostor syndrome conversation and the ultimate panacea to this issue. For too long we have laid blame on individuals for feeling
inadequate while doing so little to examine the systems they exist in that are perpetuating these feeling in them. Especially for underrepresented groups, impostor feelings are totally valid, because of the often toxic environments we exist in that are riddled with systemic bias.
Have a read about this topic on the article below!

IMPOSTOR FEELINGS ARE PERFECTLY VALID RESPONSES TO TOXIC ENVIRONMENTS⠀

This month on the podcast we are talking about a different way of looking at impostor syndrome. ⠀

This phenomenon has long been blamed on individuals without an examination of the environments that perpetuate feelings of inadequacy. Especially for people from underrepresented groups, it is important to acknowledge that our impostor feelings most of the time exist because of repeated exposure to systemic bias. Most institutions are still rooted in white supremacy and ole boys club and systemic bias routinely inhibits underrepresented groups from succeeding in them. So if you ever felt like an impostor, it’s ok, your feelings are totally valid and a normal response to a toxic environment! ⠀

The queen Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female head of state on the African continent said it best! If your dreams do not scare you then they are not big enough. ⠀

This month on BsquaredC podcast we are reflecting on the solutions to impostor syndrome or feelings of self doubt a. A little self-doubt when going after your dreams is normal and healthy and we should be embracing it. It does not mean we are less than! Our guest this month, Faith Opiyo, shared her favourite read with us the Culture Map: Decoding How People Think, Lead, and Get Things Done Across Cultures by Erin Meyer. This book is an insightful and practical guide to understand and navigate cultural differences for both your work and personal life. Moving from Kenya to an entirely different culture in Russia, Faith had to adjust to a lot of things and she wished she had this book early on in her career. YOU ARE THE MASTER OF YOUR FATE!

Our guest this month is the incredible Faith Opiyo who has proven time and again that she is the master of her own fate, against all odds!

Born and raised in Kenya, Faith’s journey has taken her to Russia, where she studied and lived for 10 years, through several career pivots in technology and all the way to being one of the few black women in cybersecurity. In this conversation amongst other things, we talked about Faith’s experiences with racism as a black person living in Russia, the challenges of being a black woman in tech and how she continues to face and fight impostor syndrome in her journey. Was going to wait to do a proper photo shoot to reveal to y’all my new hairstyle but I felt cute and decided to share these selfies instead while waiting for my next meeting sitting in my home office area 😃!

Hiii everyone! Your girl is back in the hair world 🙌🏾😃!

I have been buzzing and bleaching my hair for 5 years up until this past summer. It was my signature look that I stepped into my 30s with and has been a huge part of my corporate identity. Cutting my hair was also monumental for in many ways because I was going through some stuff when I cut it back then, and it freed me in many ways 🙌🏾!

I am happy to jump back into the hair world and I am excited to explore styles, rock a fro and shock my yt co-workers many times over🤗😃! I think my next permanent destination is sister locks 🤔.

Swipe▶️ for impressions of my hair journey including an excerpt from my blog post about it when I cut it and a bonus pic of me in grade school 😉!

We are throwing it back to season one where we met the amazing multi-passionate Arlyne Simone who is living out all of her dreams NOW! This woman is an inventor, a biomedical engineer, an author and an entrepreneur. When she is not inventing or leading teams developing medical diagnostics equipment, Arlyne is inspiring young girls in STEM through her writing taking on science adventures with the main characters in her book Abby!⠀

This week on BsquaredC podcast we are talking about finding your purpose and the freedom that comes from being aligned with it. Have you listened yet?⠀

My passion activities look like busy work and a bunch of unconnected projects because they are not in the same industry. They are not. They have a connecting thread and it is equity. My job in healthcare is about equity in access to healthcare.⠀

PWL is about equity in access to opportunities for women. BsquaredC is about equity in storytelling for black women and the Business School Prep program I co-run is about equity in access to education.⠀

I am living out my purpose in multiple ways and I get a lot of energy from all these activities that keep me going! I did not always know this was my purpose though? Want to hear more about my journey to having clarity on this? ⠀
