| COMPLETE & ILLUSTRATED |

Morals and Dogma has been described as “a collection of thirty-two essays which provide a philosophical rationale for the degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. The lectures provided a backdrop for the degrees by giving lessons in comparative religion, history and philosophy”. Its composed by 32 chapters (1 per degree in the masonic ranks of the southern jurisdiction, the 33° being the only exception), These chapters generally consist of Comparative Religion, Philosophy, Comparative Etymologies, Symbolism, and Numerology.

The primary themes of this great work are the “Secrets” or the “Great Mysteries” and their symbolism & rituals. It is stated that nothing in the book is meant to reveal any of the secrets to freemasonry but to simply hint or shed light. An emphasis on religious and cultural tolerance is shown throughout the work, emphasizing that the root of all religion was the same. These common traits and symbols in all religions are explained in detail, beginning with the Orphic Egg or Cosmic Egg, and then moving towards ancient Egyptian, Phoenician, Buddhist, and Hindu texts, and the Abrahamic religions.

A copy of Morals and Dogma was given to every new member of the Southern Jurisdiction from the early 1900s until 1969 (although some local Scottish Rite bodies offered copies through the mid-1970s), when it was deemed “too advanced to be helpful to the new Scottish Rite member.

The Kybalion: Hermetic Philosophy, originally published in 1908 under the pseudonym of “the Three Initiates”, is a book claiming to be the essence of the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus.

From old Egypt have come the fundamental esoteric and occult teachings which have so strongly influenced the philosophies of all races, na- tions and peoples, for several thousand years. Egypt, the home of the Pyramids and the Sphinx, was the birthplace of the Hidden Wisdom and Mystic Teachings. From her Secret Doctrine all nations have borrowed. India, Persia, Chaldea, Medea, China, Japan, Assyria, ancient Greece and Rome, and other ancient countries partook liberally at the feast of knowledge which the Hierophants and Masters of the Land of Isis so freely provided for those who came prepared to partake of the great store of Mystic and Occult Lore which the master-minds of that ancient land had gathered together.

Among these great Masters of Ancient Egypt there once dwelt one of whom Masters hailed as “The Master of Masters.” This man, if “man” indeed he was, dwelt in Egypt in the earliest days. He was known as Hermes Trismegistus. He was the father of the Occult Wisdom; the founder of Astrology; the discoverer of Alchemy. The details of his life story are lost to history, owing to the lapse of the years, though several of the ancient countries disputed with each other in their claims to the honor of having furnished his birthplace–and this thousands of years ago.

The Basis and Spirit of Freemasonry
Upon the foundation of Masonry is erected an elaborate allegory of human life in all its varied aspects: the Lodge a symbol of the world in which man lives, moves and goes forth to his labour; initiation our birth into a world in which we are to learn morality and charity; if counted worthy passing out of youth into manhood with its wider knowledge and heavier responsibilities; and finally, if we have integrity and courage, the discovery that we are citizens of Eternity in time: an ideal world ruled by love, wisdom, strength and beauty. It is a great day for a young man when Masonry reveals its meaning to him, unveiling its plan of life, its purpose, and its prophecy of a Temple of Brotherhood.

The Constitutions of the Free-Masons, “For the Use of the Lodges” in London and Westminster, was published in 1723. It was edited by the presbyterian clergyman, James Anderson, to the order of John Theophilus Desaguliers, and approved by a Grand Lodge committee under his control. This work was reprinted in Philadelphia in 1734 by Benjamin Franklin, who was that year elected Grand Master of Masons in Pennsylvania. It was also translated into Dutch (1736), German (1741), and French (1745).
Anderson was minister of the Presbyterian church in Swallow Street, London, which had once been Huguenot church, and one of its four Deacons was Desaguliers’ father. At the time of his meeting with Desaguliers, he seems to have passed himself off as a Talmudic scholar. His reward for his labours was the copyright on the work. In time, and to Anderson’s dismay, it was condensed into “pocket” editions over which he had no control and from which he received no income. It was expanded, updated, and re-published in 1738.

“Freemasonry is a mirror of the society itself, because its members obviously are part of society, so it cannot escape the influence of secular life other than through education. All manifestations of disrespect, of over-turning the values, manifestations that unfortunately tend to encompass all aspects of our culture today, can be tackled only through a process of return to the es-tablished society values through education.
Masonic Brotherhood is the oldest of fraternities that exist in the world at this time. One of the features that differentiated it is tradition, submitted both in writing and orally. Masonic Etiquette is one of the most im-portant aspects of tradition.”

Illustrated edition
The Secret Teachings of All Ages is perhaps the most comprehensive and complete esoteric encyclopedia ever written.

The sheer scope and ambition of this book are stunning. In this book Manly P. Hall has successfully distilled the essence of more arcane subjects than one would think possible. He covers Rosicrucianism and other secret societies, alchemy, cryptology, Kabbalah, Tarot, pyramids, the Zodiac, Pythagorean philosophy, Masonry, gemology, Nicholas Flammel, the identity of William Shakespeare, the Life and Teachings of Thoth Hermes Trismegistus, the Qabbalah, the Hiramic Legend, the Tree of the Sephiroth, Mystic Christianity, and there are more than 200 illustrations included here.

IT is the earnest desire of the author of this Monitor to discover that all the Commanderies invest the beautiful, instructive and entertaining Order of the Red Cross with the interest its importance demands. The Ritual provides ample opportunity for the display of true dramatic taste, both in robing and in reading. It also presents the great central thought of the Order,—TRUTH,— as it has never been presented previous to the adoption at Denver.
The feeling had become almost universal that the Order of the Red Cross was of slight importance, and was at best little more than a social observance. Hence the ceremonials were hurried over, the candidate was practically told that it was mere matter of form, and he went away profoundly impressed that the Commandery was indeed a jovial institution. Never was a graver mistake, and the impression so made was more injurious than beneficial. The Ritual now adopted cannot fail to correct that erroneous view of the value of the Order.

William James Hutchinson (1732-1814) was a solicitor, antiquarian, novelist, Freemason, prominent member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries and, for some years, Master of the Masonic Lodge of Concord at Barnard Castle. The series of lectures Hutchinson composed and delivered to the Lodge attracted so much attention that he was requested to publish them in permanent form.

Although of a highly religious, Christian character, it soon became a classic in the literature of Freemasonry. Received with enthusiasm, it was widely accepted as the first work to deal with the religion, philosophy, spirituality, purpose, and deeper significance of Free- masonry. Its popularity among Masonic scholars has never decreased.

Little is known of the Masonic record of General Washington from the time he received his Master Mason's Degree in Fredericksburg Lodge in 1753 until the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The records of his mother Lodge, covering a part of the early period of his Masonic life, were lost or destroyed, and as that old institution was one of the first established and among the very few existing in the colony when Washington became a Mason, the loss of these records deprives the Fraternity at large of valuable information relating not only to Washington but to a large number of his fraternal contemporaries, who in after years rose to distinction in both military and civil life...

Foundations of a World under Construction
In this second collection of Masonic essays, historian and Masonic scholar Dr David Harrison has put together a number of his past papers and articles, including examinations of literary figures who were Freemasons, such as Bram Stoker and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, looking at how Freemasonry influenced their creative ideas and their writing. Papers on natural philosophers such as Dr Jean Theophilus Desaguliers and men of the Enlightenment such as Thomas Garnett continue the theme of Masonic personalities; Desaguliers and Garnett being examples of men who attempted to make the world a better place with scientific ideas and education. There are essays on esoteric writers such as Godfrey Higgins, and an exploration of the similarities in certain practices between Freemasonry and the Sufi Orders of the Balkans, the collection being completed with Harrison's award winning paper on the Liverpool Masonic Rebellion. This new collection certainly presents an eclectic mix of Masonic history, though the reader will find similar themes running through each piece; themes that resonate the search for the hidden mysteries of nature and science.

Monitorial Instructions in the Degrees of Mark, Past and Most Excellent Master and The Royal Arch
The objects of the author in the preparation of the present work has been to place in the hands of every Royal Arch Mason a book in which he may find a lucid explanation, so far as the laws of our institution will permit, of all that has excited his curiosity or attracted his interest in the Chapter degrees, and above all, to furnish an elementary treatise of easy comprehension on the symbolism of Royal Arch Masonry. The plan upon which it has been written is a novel and hitherto untried one. Yet he thinks that he knows enough, from past experience of the wants of young as well as of old masons, to authorize him to anticipate, with some confidence, its favorable acceptance by the craft.

24/05/2022

The purpose of this work is not so much to gratify the curiosity of the uninitiated as to furnish a guide for the neophytes of the Order, by means of which their progress from grade to grade may be facilitated. Every statement in the book is authentic, as every proficient Mason will admit to himself, if not to be public, as he turns over its pages. The non- Masonic reader, as he peruses them, will perhaps be puzzled to imagine why matters of so little real importance to society at large should have been so industriously concealed for centuries, and still more surprised that society should have been so extremely inquisitive about them. “But such,” as Old Stapleton says, in ‘Jacob Faithful,’ “is human nature.” The object of the Order in making a profound mystery of its proceedings is obvious enough. Sea-birds are not more in-variably attracted toward a lighted beacon on a dark night, than men to whatever savors of mystery. Curiosity has had a much greater influence in swelling the ranks of Masonry than philanthropy and brotherly love. The institution, however, is now sufficiently popular to stand upon its own merits, without the aid of clap-trap, so “via the mantle that shadowed Borgia.”

During the 12th century, the Cistercian Order, which followed the Benedictine Rule, founded numerous abbeys in England, and many masons joined the order as lay brothers or "converts." Because of their participation in monastic life, masons incorporated elements from both the Benedictine Rule and the Cistercian Ritual into their own usages and ceremonies. Among the elements coming from the monastic customs and rituals we find expressions such as "free and of good report" and "just and perfect," as well as the Sign of Grief and Distress, the prayers, the examination of the candidates, the posture during the Obligation, the need to render the masonic oath into a Solemn Obligation by kissing the Volume of the Sacred Law, the participation of the Brethren in the reception of the neophyte, the Charity Test or the custom of taking the new brother to a seat near the Senior Deacon. The Festive Board also follows accurately the monastic customs, as it borrows from monastic usages the arrangement of the table, the blessings, the location of the Master and the Wardens, and the Toast List, particularly the Toast to Absent Brethren and the Tylers Toast. Rather than speaking of influence, the reality is that the Benedictine Rule and the Cistercian Ritual formed the crucible where the Masonic ritual was forged.

24/03/2022

The “Statutes and Regulations of the Society of the Masters of Masonry and Carpentry” was originally written in Latin by a notary of Bologna by order of the “Podestà” of Bologna, Bonifacio De Cario, and is dated: August 8, 1248. This manuscript is currently preserved in the State Archives of Bologna. According to historian specialist in Masonry, father Ferrer Benimeli, in his commentary on the “Carta di Bologna” says: “As much for the legal, as for the symbolic and representative aspects, the Statutes of Bologna of 1248, with the documents attached to it, connects us with an Operative Masonry that was thus far unknown, and that is of interest to the modern international historiography, particularly of Masonry, because it is placed, by its chronology and importance hitherto unknown, at the height of the British manuscript “Regius Poem” which is much newer, and that until now was considered the oldest and most important work.”
