“Tree officers are the custodians. There’s been a whole chain of people who’ve looked after those trees since the mid-1800s. We’ll never know their names – but there’s a sense of being part of something larger. And that’s a wonderful privilege.”

Alex Diggins interviews John Parker of the Arboricultural Association.

'Decisions made at the very beginning of the design process set the scene for what happens at the end of a structure’s life cycle – whether it be a bathroom vanity unit or a skyscraper. Architects, designers and construction professionals should see the materials they use as part of a wider store of resources, rather than as one-off constituents of one-off projects.'

'The country is now reconsidering its long-time dependence on hydropower, as chronic droughts cut production at its massive hydro dams. These droughts - caused by climate change - have in recent years lowered water levels, severely curtailing power production. Zambia has as a result seen electricity shortages estimated at around one third of its total installed hydroelectric capacity.'

📍Lusaka, Zambia: Derrick Silimina looks into Zambia's impending shift to solar power.

Droughts have made Zambia's reliance on hydropower unsustainable. Now the country is embracing solar energy.

The acquisition of fish is just one example: fresh fish cannot be purchased on the island, so you must be a keen fisherman or know one if you want to have fresh fish for dinner. Welcome to Ours to Save

Climate change is already happening. But there are a lot of people already on the case. Inspired by the impact of rolling news coverage during the covid-19 pandemic, we want to replicate this level of urgency for another crisis – one that’s just around the corner, but that we still largely have the power to prevent. We want to make it easier to visualise where we’re making progress and where we’re failing, and therefore possible to hold the powerful to account and lift up those fighting back from the grassroots. So, we’ve made an interactive platform for crowdsourced, global climate news. We can’t wait to see what you do with it.

How does it work?

Our climate map is free for all to access. You can scroll over the pins, checking out stories from your neighbourhood and much further afield. On our news page you’ll find in-depth investigations of the issues raised on the map, features and op-eds by prominent and emerging journalists, and the back catalogue of all our pins and stories. We are also in the process of building an initiatives page – a platform for purchasing eco-friendly produce, and supporting sustainable projects, research and ventures.
