Today we discuss the Equality Congress organised by the Prime Minister's Office that took place last Wednesday at Harpa Concert Hall. What went well, what could have gone better and why we, women of foreign origin in Iceland, are still far away from being treated as equals.

STATEMENT ON JAFNRÉTTISÞING 2022:
ÍSLENSKAN FYRIR NEÐAN/ICELANDIC BELOW

We object to Sólveig Anna Jónsdóttir as a speaker at this event regarding the equal rights of foreign women in the workforce.

We object for the following reasons.

Sólveig Anna was chosen as a representative for Efling, a union with the highest foreign membership. Sólveig was chosen to speak on behalf of foreign women despite the fact she is not of foreign origin and the Vice Chair of Efling is actually a foreign woman in Iceland.

The topic of her speech is not even about equality for foreign women, but simply about "low wage women". The issues foreign women face in the labor market are different and deserve special attention.

Sólveig herself is guilty of undermining the participation of foreign women in the labor movement and the services these foreign women recieve at the union she is the chair of. After the mass layoff in April she required fluent Icelandic for all jobs at Efling and thus reduced the amount of foreigners who worked at Efling.

Sólveig has also decided to stop participating in workplace inspections, which were vital in providing outreach and assistance to the most vulnerable foreign workers, those who do not speak Icelandic or English.

Additionally, Sólveig Anna has taken it upon herself to decide that Icelandic classes were not important enough to include in collective wage agreements. When challenged on her stance by W.O.M.E.N, a well known organisation of foreign women in Iceland with 19 years of experience, she completely dismissed them.

Therefore Sólveig Anna deserves a red card in this game.

Finally, we object to the fact this event was held entirely in Icelandic and in the middle of the week, reducing the participation of foreign women at the event.

We once again feel we are being spoken about without being included in the conversation and that this event is tantamount to a feel good PR event for Icelanders that will result in little change in the lives of foreign women.

Við mótmælum Sólveigu Önnu sem ræðismanni á þessum viðburði varðandi réttindi kvenna á erlendum uppruna á íslenskum vinnumarkaði.

Við mótmælum af eftirfarandi ástæðum:

Sólveig Anna var valin sem fulltrúi eflingar, hvers meðlimir af erlendum uppruna telja meirihluta félagsins.

Sólveig var valin til þess að ræða fyrir erlendra kvenna, þrátt fyrir að varaforstjóri eflingar sé erlendur kvenmaður.

Umræðuefni ræðu hennar er um láglaunafólk, en þau vandamál sem herja á erlendar konur eru margbreytileg og þarfnast sérstakrar athygli.

Sólveig er sjálf sek um að grafa undan þáttöku erlendra kvenna á vinnumarkaði, sem og þjónustu til þeirra sem allra réttindi sín til stéttarfélagsins. Eftir brottrekstur allmargra í apríl frá skrifstofum félagsins, lagði hun fram kröfu um íslensku kunnáttu meðal umsækjenda til vinnu, og þar með hindraði þáttöku innflytjenda sem unnu áður hjá Eflingu.

Sólveig hefur einnig hætt að framfylgja vinnueftirliti sem hlúðu að þeim viðkvæmustu hópum innflytjenda, sem tala hvorki ensku né íslensku.

Til viðbótar ákvað Sólveig að íslensku kennsla væri ekki í forgangi og þyrfti ekki á þá minnst í kjarasamningum. Þegar hún fékk gagnrýni vegna þess frá samtökum kvenna af erlendum uppruna, sýndi hún þeim athugasemdum engan áhuga.

Vegna þess fær Sólveig rautt spjald í þessum leik.

Að lokum mótmælum við að þetta "jafnréttisþing" fari fram einungis á íslensku, í miðri viku, sem hefur þau augljósu áhrif að skera á þáttöku erlendra kvenna.

Enn er talað um okkur, frekar en að okkur sé boðið inn í samræðuna, og virðist sem þessi ráðstefna sé gervi viðburður fyrir Íslendinga sem mun ekki hafa nein jákvæð áhrif á stöðu erlendra kvenna.

Samkvæmt 25.gr. laga nr. 150/2020 um jafna stöðu og jafnan rétt kynjanna skal ráðherra boða til jafnréttisþings á tveggja ára fresti þar sem fjalla skal um jafnrétti kynjanna. Forsætisráðherra býður til jafnréttisþing 2022 þar sem fjallað verður um stöðu kvenna af erlendum u...
