🔎A CLOSER LOOK🔍 DO IT AGAIN//GAMBLE & LEE UNLIMITED:

So up until now with these segments I’ve had some real good source material to make fun of; Dirty Laundry is attached by the hip to a laughable revenge plot, One More Night is perhaps the most vacuous song ever written by the most vacuous recording artist on earth, and don’t get me started on the uncut desperation of Kokomo (that unlocked in me an endless and effortless supply of nasty s**t to say, which I had no idea lay dormant beneath my quivering fingertips).
However.. Today I dig into Steely Dan’s 1972 number 1 hit, “Do It Again” and to my greatest chagrin, I just can’t find a way to provide you guys with the same level of high concept hypers-nark journalism you’ve gotten acclimatized to. As far as I can surmise, the juiciest details about this track are 1. that it is in the key of G minor, 2. that it utilizes a large amount of syncopation in the vocal melody, and 3. that Donald Fagan used a Yamaha YC-30 for that ridiculous “plastic Organ” solo
Yeah yeah that might be pretty much word for word what it says on wikipedia, but i did my research and that’s literally all it says anywhere. A small disclaimer: I have not and will never watch “the story of: Steely Dan” documentary (available for like 7 bucks on Amazon) so maybe I’m missing out on the murderous blood feuds/incestuous su***de pacts/voluntary, ritualistic p***s amputations that went into the writing and recording of this song but i fu***ng doubt it.

Dylan Gamble and Sook-Yin Lee (yes Canadians
THAT Sook-Yin Lee, my buddy’s dating a famous person
Americans and everyone else who’s stumbled upon this bandcamp by accident, don’t worry about it, skip the parentheses) did this real cool jungle version of this song, with like a DNA-esque noise guitar solo in the middle to make up for that Yamaha YC-30 nonsense. Dylan did the keys naturally cause he’s the key-meister in the going-places-psych-rock outfit Hot Garbage, and Sook-Yin did the 90s rave beat, and they collaborated on the vocals. I guess I distracted them from making a movie or some s**t when I asked them to do a cover for the mixtape so I’m pretty flattered they did such a thorough job
It’s a slogging fu***ng song.
HIGHLIGHT REAL:
-When Dylan showed me the picture of Steely Dan and said that he thought it was funny that they looked way more like they worked at the studio than artists themselves
-When Dylan and Sook-Yin replicated that photo

🔎A CLOSER LOOK🔍 JYRAPH//ONE MORE NIGHT:

As Phil Collins explained so eloquently to Pl***oy in 1985 “I really have no idea what this song’s about. I like Michael Jackson and ‘One More Night’ was the least threatening, lowest common denominator lyric that popped into my stegosaurus brain in the 10 seconds it took for me to write this contractual obligation yawn-fest. It might be the most vapid thing I've written in my whole career. Who cares, you'll buy it. It's gonna be a hit”. I don’t have to tell you that he didn’t actually say that to Pl***oy, but honestly he basically did.

Anyway, you know who’s better than Phil Collins? T. Rex. And that’s what I assume my friend Jyraph thinks also, because his approach to the rejuvenation of Phil’s terrible song is basically: “what if it sounded more like T. Rex?” And I’m here to tell you Pablo...It sounds better, you were right. Good call.

HIGHLIGHT REEL:
-The relentless oscillating fuzz guitar pan that literally never stops.
-The way the whole song sounds like the grossest shade of navy blue.

🔎A CLOSER LOOK🔍 OLGA//KOKOMO:

As the second instalment of our Closer Look series that examines a song a day from "Sepsis Mixtape no. 2: 100 Yacht Rock Classics", I'll be examining my own cover of The Beach Boys' late 80s anti-comeback, commercial mega hit, Kokomo!

I want to paint a picture of the Beach Boys in 1987...They suck. They haven't had a charting hit in 22 years. Their creative engine has been in a self inflicted waking coma for like..a little too long there bud, I mean cut the dramatic act Brian. Then, what comes over the Elektra licensing department head's desk but the opportunity of a lifetime for Mike Love and the gang! The invitation to write the theme to the tropical showboat bartending flick starring Tom Cruise, 'Cocktail!' (probably one of the most memorable and timeless romantic comedies of the decade, step aside John Hughes). And the rest is history. The Beach Boys jump at the opportunity to write a fluffy, unsubstantial tropical grocery list of a song about a place that doesn't exist off the Florida Keys of all hell holes to write a gettaway song about... Like, you know what's super exotic? Fort Lauderdale... Anyway it was their first number 1 hit in forever and made them think they could keep making music for another 30 years, so thanks Gen X.

I fu***ng love the song though. It was the inception of this whole Album. I just really wanted to cover Kokomo without getting laughed at so I conned all my friends into doing covers of equally s**tty songs so mine would blend in. I knew right off the bat that I wanted to make it sound like Prozaac, and Aqua. I mean bands that are pure catch value and sacrifice literally EVERY OUNCE OF COOL for that perfect pop - Because Kokomo IS a perfect pop song. I just wanted to bring it into the 21st century baby...actually not even. Just to like 1999 for some reason.

HIGHLIGHT REEL:
-Champagne pop snare. that's it.

🔎A CLOSER LOOK🔍 INGO//DIRTIER LAUNDRY:

This is the first instalment of a 15 day feature series we at Sepsis are embarking on to make up for the gross lack of liner notes on the "Sepsis Mixtape no.2: 100 Yacht Rock Classics" compilation album.

Don Henley's Dirty Laundry is a revenge ballad against the press, penned after his arrests for drug possession and contribution to the delinquency of a minor were, surprise surprise...written about. That same media helped to put the song at no. 3 in the billboard top 100 for 8 weeks in 1983, and the goofy trench-coat-heavy music video was still an MTV daytime staple up to the mid 2000s when MTV stopped having anything to do with music all together.

Ingo (Alastair Cavanagh) blew this track out of the water. When he asked me if he could do the song I said "jesus christ, ok. But that's the last Don Henley song i'm allowing on this thing". I'm seriously glad I did because it's one of the best tracks on the mixtape. Ingo told me he made the entire song at a trudging mid tempo bpm before changing his mind and speeding it all the way up to like the speed of a German Gabber club hit, which ends up sounding psychotic, and hilarious and way better than the original within the first 5 seconds. I listened to this song every day when i woke up for a month before the release of this mixtape and you should too.

HIGHLIGHT REEL:
-Key change and subsequent vocal pitch drop in the bridge
-Metal breakdown outro, f**k yeah

Sepsis Record Club is proud to announce our second compilation album **100 Yacht Rock Classics**.
Yacht rock is perhaps one of the most insidious artistic bodies of the 20th century. Fundamentally depraved, brazenly capitalistic, cartoonishly lame, it's just awful, awful music. That's why we at Sepsis decided we needed to dig yacht rock up from it's Bermuda Triangle grave, polish it up and market it back to you, our faithful consumer!
In all seriousness though, we've completely decimated these songs..This is an act of resistance, it was never hip to be square, and Jimmy Buffett can suck my dick. Enjoy!

Stay Safe, Stay Septic,

Olga.

In the wake of the escalated police violence to the Black community in our country and abroad, Sepsis Record Club is postponing all releases until further notice. This action is in an attempt to help declutter social media from content unrelated to these atrocities and the important backlash to them.

A host of record labels and other music industry figures are planning a social media blackout on Tuesday in solidarity with the black community.
