đA CLOSER LOOKđ DO IT AGAIN//GAMBLE & LEE UNLIMITED:
So up until now with these segments Iâve had some real good source material to make fun of; Dirty Laundry is attached by the hip to a laughable revenge plot, One More Night is perhaps the most vacuous song ever written by the most vacuous recording artist on earth, and donât get me started on the uncut desperation of Kokomo (that unlocked in me an endless and effortless supply of nasty s**t to say, which I had no idea lay dormant beneath my quivering fingertips).
However.. Today I dig into Steely Danâs 1972 number 1 hit, âDo It Againâ and to my greatest chagrin, I just canât find a way to provide you guys with the same level of high concept hypers-nark journalism youâve gotten acclimatized to. As far as I can surmise, the juiciest details about this track are 1. that it is in the key of G minor, 2. that it utilizes a large amount of syncopation in the vocal melody, and 3. that Donald Fagan used a Yamaha YC-30 for that ridiculous âplastic Organâ soloâŠYeah yeah that might be pretty much word for word what it says on wikipedia, but i did my research and thatâs literally all it says anywhere. A small disclaimer: I have not and will never watch âthe story of: Steely Danâ documentary (available for like 7 bucks on Amazon) so maybe Iâm missing out on the murderous blood feuds/incestuous su***de pacts/voluntary, ritualistic p***s amputations that went into the writing and recording of this song but i fu***ng doubt it.
Dylan Gamble and Sook-Yin Lee (yes Canadians⊠THAT Sook-Yin Lee, my buddyâs dating a famous personâŠAmericans and everyone else whoâs stumbled upon this bandcamp by accident, donât worry about it, skip the parentheses) did this real cool jungle version of this song, with like a DNA-esque noise guitar solo in the middle to make up for that Yamaha YC-30 nonsense. Dylan did the keys naturally cause heâs the key-meister in the going-places-psych-rock outfit Hot Garbage, and Sook-Yin did the 90s rave beat, and they collaborated on the vocals. I guess I distracted them from making a movie or some s**t when I asked them to do a cover for the mixtape so Iâm pretty flattered they did such a thorough jobâŠItâs a slogging fu***ng song.
HIGHLIGHT REAL:
-When Dylan showed me the picture of Steely Dan and said that he thought it was funny that they looked way more like they worked at the studio than artists themselves
-When Dylan and Sook-Yin replicated that photo
