In this episode we have Nia Mitchell, a first-generation medical student currently attending Duke University School of Medicine on a full scholarship! She hails from Trinidad and immigrated to the United States as a child. In the podcast, she discusses the challenges she faced as a black woman in America and how she was able to overcome them to excel in her studies and secure a full scholarship to one of the top medical schools in the country. Despite limited resources, Nia thrived in her environment and is an inspiration to other underrepresented students pursuing a career in medicine.

#4: Telling Middle Eastern Parents The Truth About Medicine

In this episode, we have a special guest, Grace Motahari, who shares her personal story of navigating the challenges of informing her middle eastern parents of her decision to change her career path away from medicine. Growing up in a collectivistic culture, Grace faced difficulties in expressing her desire to deviate from the traditional path of becoming a doctor, which her parents had envisioned for her. Despite initially facing resistance, Grace was able to effectively communicate her true passion for wedding planning to her parents, ultimately leading to their full support and understanding. Through Grace's experience, this podcast aims to empower its audience to find the courage to have difficult conversations with their families about career changes and discover their own true passions.

Today on this podcast, we're joined by Tatiana Rodriguez, a first-generation and non-traditional student who has overcome adversity to achieve her dream of becoming a medical student. Tatiana is originally from Puerto Rico and, like many others, faced challenges after Hurricane Maria. Despite her first language not being English, she adapted to her rough surroundings and persevered. Tatiana's journey as a first-generation and non-traditional student adds a unique perspective to her story and makes her achievement even more impressive. During our conversation, Tatiana shares her personal journey of taking the MCAT twice and getting scores below 500, but still managing to get acceptances to not one, but three medical schools. Tatiana's story is an inspiration to anyone facing a difficult road and serves as a reminder that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and this podcast is dedicated to helping people who are interested in pursuing a career in these fields but don't know where to start.

Adam is a first-generation, non-traditional student who was accepted into medical school but decided not to go. He understands the challenges and obstacles that can come with trying to break into the STEM field and wants to help others navigate them.

Through this podcast, Adam will be bringing on amazing guests who have been through adversity and can offer valuable advice and insights on the fields they are currently in. From the struggles of being a minority in the STEM field to the challenges of being a non-traditional student, these guests will share their stories and offer advice on how to overcome these obstacles and succeed in a STEM career.
