A batch of 300 South Sudanese soldiers has joined 45 others in the Democratic Republic of Congo, under the mandate of the regional force of the East African Community. Some 300 troops left Juba International Airport Monday morning aboard two Kenyan defence aircraft.
Army spokesperson Maj Gen L*l Ruai says the troops are among 750 SSPDF forces selected for the peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The South Sudanese soldiers are part of the seven-nation East African Community (EAC) military force, which was created last June to stabilize eastern DR Congo, which has been plagued by armed groups.

FVP Riek Machar daughter’s dowry explained

Below are some of the true details.

Dr. Riek Machar, the First Vice President of the Republic, has refused to accept more than 45 (forty five) cows as dowry for the hand (marriage) of his daughter, Judge Meer Riek Machar, during the dowry negotiations yesterday (Sunday) at his residence in Juba.

This is despite the fact that his daughter, Meer, is holding a Masters Degree, and has been a practising lawyer (judge) in London for the last eight years.

This is also despite the fact that the groom's parents offered more cows for the marriage of their son.

Initially, Dr. Riek Machar and his wife, Mama Angelina Teny, only asked for 11 (eleven) cows for the dowry per the initial customary laws.

Their argument is that raising or inflating dowries for marriages as is currently happening in some communities in South Sudan will make it extremely difficult for young people, including graduates, to get married and establish their respective families.

But other relatives from the FVP's side agreed to the reduction to 45, instead of just 11. Their argument is that Dr. Riek will also have to give a number of cows to various uncles of Meer, etc., from the 45 as the customs dictate it.

Also 5 to 8 cows from the 45 cows will be returned to the groom's in-laws as the customs in Western Nuer demands it.

So technically, the dowry is only 37 cows to be paid to the bride's family, from which uncles of the bride, etc., will also be given some cows.

It is important that our leaders set a practical example in the drive to reduce the bride price, and make it affordable to form a family in many communities in South Sudan. A family is a nucleus of a society.

Currently, dowries or bride prices are being increased to hundreds of cows or their equivalent in money. This is unbecoming!

GOVERNOR ALEU - "GOVERNMENT WON'T TOLERATE ATTACKS BY ARMED CIVILIANS ON ITS FORCES"

JUBA – The Governor of Warrap State General Aleu Ayieny Aleu on Saturday warned that the state government won’t tolerate any attacks by armed civilians on its forces.

This came following June clashes between armed cattle rustlers and soldiers in Tonj North which left 28 people dead.

Among the dead included armed civilians, SSPDF Chief of Military Intelligence, Majors and Captains, 3 commanders, and the former Commissioner of Mayen Jur County.

While addressing a public rally on the occasion to mark Martyrs Day in Kuajok town on Saturday, General Aleu urged armed youth to immediately stop kind of hostilities against government forces, warning that any attack on military barrack won’t be tolerated.

Aleu called on the people of Tonj North County to denounce violence and embrace peace in order to foster development and rebuild peaceful cohesion in the state.

“Peace must begin within Tonj North and extends to other areas, with peace you will have time for farming, education, health, and so forth,” Aleu said.

He called on armed civilians to continue voluntarily surrendering guns peacefully.


Warrap State, particularly Tonj North County has been the scene of bloody clashes in recent years between government forces and armed youth.

More than 148 civilians, including soldiers, were killed in August 2020 during disarmament exercise that sparked clashes between armed youth from the cattle camp and SSPDF officers.

The violence at the Romic area in Tonj East erupted when soldiers beat up a youth wearing a red scarf on his head, angering his colleagues who later on retaliated with gunfire.
