Jamaica Plans to Remove King Charles as Head of State by Next Year, Minister Says
"We remain hopeful that by 2025 we would have completed those reforms and removed the British monarch as the head of our democracy," Jamaica's foreign minister said in a new interview.

King Charles is not only the monarch of the United Kingdon, but he also serves as head of state of 15 Commonwealth realms. That number could drop as soon as next year: In a new interview with the Independent, Jamaica's foreign minister Alando Terrelonge revealed that Jamaica remains on track to remove King Charles as head of state.

"We remain hopeful that by 2025 we would have completed those reforms and removed the British monarch as the head of our democracy," Terrelonge said, adding "notwithstanding it being a figurehead and that real power resides with the government of Jamaica and the people of Jamaica." This follows with what Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness told Prince William and Kate Middleton on their visit to the nation in 2022. He said that his country was "moving on" to "fulfill our true ambitions and destiny as an independent, developed, prosperous country."

On the heels of an impressive ninth consecutive quarter of economic growth for Jamaica’s tourism industry, Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett has kicked off engagements in Eastern Europe with a marketing blitz to promote destination Jamaica amid the staging of the 19th World Athletics Championships underway in Budapest, Hungary.

“We met with over 50 tour operators, travel agents and media representatives at the President’s Hotel. We discussed the new way in which Jamaica will engage Central and Eastern European countries, including Poland, Georgia, Serbia and Bulgaria, among others. The connection of course being through Berlin, Germany, via Condor that has a direct route between Montego Bay and Berlin. We are also in discussions with a major private sector player about their plans to operate charter flights between Bulgaria and Jamaica for Winter 2023/24,” noted Minister Bartlett.

Noting that the traffic between Hungary and Jamaica is currently low, the tourism minister stressed that the appetite for travel to Jamaica is strong and he is excited to capitalise on this. He continued, “As Jamaica doubles down on its efforts to increase visitor arrivals, this will provide a unique opportunity to leverage the power of sports tourism to promote Jamaica as an attractive and dynamic travel destination and strengthen the relationship between Jamaica and Europe.”

The tourism minister also highlighted that these engagements are aligned with the Ministry of Tourism’s Blue Ocean Strategy which is targeted at bolstering arrivals from non-traditional markets while encouraging product differentiation locally. Along the same vein, Minister Bartlett welcomed the recent announcement from the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) that the Hotels & Restaurants industry grew by 9% in the April to June 2023 quarter, with preliminary estimates on foreign national arrivals standing at 705,031 visitors, an increase of 14.2% compared with the corresponding quarter of 2022.

At the same time, the latest tourism figures show that between January and July of this year, Jamaica welcomed some 2.47 million visitors. This includes 1.72 million stopover visitors and 747,643 cruise visitors, more than twice the number recorded for the corresponding period in 2022; with gross earnings of US$2.59 billion.

“You’re looking at a more than 24% increase in gross tourism dollars earned in just those seven months. The economy continues to grow, and tourism continues to play a big role in that. Coming out of the pandemic, tourism has consistently demonstrated its resilience and, as a result, the sector’s contribution to the Jamaican economy cannot be overlooked. Now more than ever, we are focused on advancing programmes and policies that ensure this growth trajectory is sustained,” asserted the tourism minister.

With the PIOJ’s recent quarterly report confirming that total visitor expenditure for April 2023 increased by 19.7%, compared with the corresponding month of 2022 as well as a 14.7% uptick in preliminary airport arrivals for July 2023, Jamaica is on track to meet its projections of 3.8 million visitors and foreign exchange earnings of US$4.1 billion by the end of the year.

Returning focus to the dual-purpose nature of his trip, Minister Bartlett added, “The other noteworthy area is the impact of the World Athletics Championships where the Jamaicans are performing creditably and are expected to do greater things leading up to Sunday’s closure. Already we have three medals, two silver and a bronze, and we are expecting to pick up several gold medals in the coming days.”

Bermuda

Bermuda is just a quick flight away for those living on the East Coast, so this island can be enjoyed even if you only have a free long weekend. Unlike most other islands, August is a great time to visit Bermuda because it is typically spared from summer hurricanes, and the weather is still quite pleasant.

Additionally, Bermuda celebrates the Emancipation from August 3-4 with a Cup Match cricket game. During this time, the island’s culture is on full display with food, drinks, games and festivities. This summer, designer Sarah Bray has also collaborated with Rosewood Bermuda on a collection of her sustainable sun hats and curated a local’s guide to “off-the-beaten-path” places for guests to explore.

The International Society of Hospitality Consultants (ISHC) in partnership with Caribbean Hotel & Resort Investment Summit (CHRIS) presented Julianna Musgrove, Regional Manager – Learning and Development (Northern Caribbean) at Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort Villages and Spa, with the prestigious Rising Star Award Caribbean.

Of her award, Julianna remarked, “I am extremely honoured and humbled to have been recognised by the tourism industry’s top leaders across the Caribbean as the recipient of the 2023 Rising Star Award – Caribbean. As a young professional that didn't know exactly what I wanted to do as a career, I chose hospitality because it is the leading industry in the Caribbean. My journey with Sandals allowed me to work in a wide number of departments and train at different levels until I found my passion. Following such an enriching experience, I knew that I wanted to build a career on providing the same opportunities and growth that I have received for up-and-coming professionals within hospitality. I am committed to the continuous mentorship and development of the future generation of hospitality leaders within the Caribbean and will use this award as a testimony that there are meaningful and impactful careers within the hospitality industry that are fulfilling and rewarding. When you love what you do, and you do it with passion and purpose everything else will fall into place.”

Atlantis Paradise Island, a global leader in marine life conservation, will be home to The Bahamas’ first coral gene bank, making strides in the global fight against Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD), an affliction decimating coral populations in The Bahamas and beyond.
Nearly half of The Bahamas and Caribbean’s reef-building coral species are susceptible to SCTLD. Of the 45 reef-building coral species within the region, more than half can catch the disease, including some of the slowest-growing and longest-lived species such as brain, pillar and star corals. Coral survival rate of SCTLD is extremely low and once infected, corals can die within weeks.

Signed into effect on May 18th, The Bahamas Coral Gene Bank at Atlantis Paradise Island (BCGB) is a collaboration between Atlantis and its 501(c)3 nonprofit organization Atlantis Blue Project Foundation (ABPF), The Bahamas Ministry of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs, Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) and University of The Bahamas. Under this agreement, Atlantis and ABPF will support the effort to build and equip a biosecure facility to save the most vulnerable coral species from SCTLD until they can be safely returned to the reefs.

In its 25-year history, Atlantis has established itself as a leader in sustainable tourism with ongoing work to protect, rehabilitate and conserve marine life in The Bahamas. The Atlantis team makes decisions guided by current and future environmental, social and economic impacts. The resort’s innovative, progressive, passion-driven approach to preserving paradise underscores every aspect of the iconic destination resort, from family-friendly activities to diverse dining offerings.

Future Goals, a landmark partnership program between Sandals Resorts International (SRI) and AFC Ajax that turns fishing nets sourced from the ocean and recycled plastic waste into soccer goals for children, celebrates its first anniversary this month.
Founded to expand opportunity to Caribbean children through the power of youth sports, the program which began in Curaçao with the debut of Sandals Royal Curaçao one year ago, announces milestone achievements and events marking the occasion.

According to Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, SRI’s on-the-ground philanthropic arm, the Future Goals program has been a resounding success, providing goals for play, while removing plastic waste, training new coaches and most importantly, making a difference in the lives of local children.

Working with innovative local Curaçaon plastic recycling company Limpi, Future Goals has created 40 football goals since its launch last year; each made from recycled plastic bottles and caps, of which more than 600,000 have been collected through recycling efforts of residents as well as clean-up drives at beaches and in communities. In addition, 160 square meters of ghost fishing nets - nets that have been lost or abandoned in the ocean - were retrieved from the Caribbean Sea and used to make the goals with enough material leftover to make 300 nets for the transport of soccer balls (footballs) provided by partner adidas. Overall, Future Goals programming was available at 29 classes, impacting more than 750 students island wide
