Shravanabelagola railway station in Hassan district will be the first carbon-neutral railway station in Karnataka. South Western Railway officials said that the station would be powered 100% by solar energy.

7.9kWp solar panels have been installed at the Shravanabelagola railway station. The solar plant, commissioned on January 6, is working in off-grid mode at present, however, it will be synchronized with the grid in 3-6 months.

Vijaya, Chief PRO of SWR said that “the solar plant is generating around 5 units a day and to synchronize the plant with the grid, approval has been obtained from Cescom. This can export nearly 25 units a day”.

The station has also been equipped with a 1kWp solar tree. Five solar-powered pumps have also been installed at the station.

Phool came into existence in 2017 when its founder Ankit Agarwal visited the Ganges Ghats in Kanpur. Looking at the polluted nature of the Ganges, he realized the problem of temple flowers.

Phool, in order to preserve the Ganges, created natural oils, incense sticks, and cones that are 100% organic and sustainable. It has also managed to upcycle more than 2753 metric tonnes of temple flowers using organic vermicompost methods.

In addition to this sustainable practice of waste flower management, Phool is also helping in the upliftment of hundreds of marginalized women from Dalit communities by providing them socio-economic opportunities.

The National Green Tribunal has asked states to explore the viability of electric or PNG crematorium to control air pollution.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that as per religious belief, the mode of cremation by fire is considered to be pious and in one cremation, 350-450 Kg of wood is burnt in the open. However, in this course of cremation, air pollution takes place.

While making it clear that it has no intention to hurt anybody’s religious belief, the bench said it has asked all States and UTs to take steps to prevent such pollution and educate and motivate people to switch over to environment friendly methods of cremation.

He was the main force behind the revival of some 3000 johads (small earthen check dams that capture and conserve rainwater) spread across more than 650 villages in Alwar district, Rajasthan, starting from 1984.

He has won the Magsaysay Award in 2001 and the Stockholm Water Prize in 2015 for working to protect this precious resource that is water.

He runs the Rajasthan-based Tarun Bharat Sangh NGO, which has built about 8,600 johads to collect rainwater in 850 villages in 11 districts of Rajasthan providing water to over 1,000 villages.

Jadav Payeng single-handedly started planting trees in a piece of barren land and turned it into an entire forest!

The forest, named Molai forest after him, is located near Kokilamukh of Jorhat, Assam and encompasses an area of about 1,360 acres / 550 hectares – approximately the size of 15 football stadiums!

At 16, he saw hundreds of dead snakes, the victims of a major drought occurring on Majuli Reserve—the world’s largest river island located in the Brahmaputra River in India.

Even at such a young age, he knew that someone had to do something, so in 1979, he started planting a tree sapling a day in the barren soil. He did that for 40 years and turned the barren land into the Molai forest.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015 for his contributions to the environment.

His inspirational story shows us that we can start small, and if we commit to it and stay consistent, then it can lead to big changes.

Saathi is creating massive impact through their eco-friendly and biodegradable hygiene products.

Saathi pads are made with banana fibre because of its highly absorbent properties, and the environmental and social benefits of its supply chain.

Banana fibre comes from the stem of the banana tree, which after harvesting is normally discarded. Saathi instead buys the stems from local farmers.

After they extract the fibre, the residue left over can be fermented and used by farmers as an organic fertilizer.

They also contribute to the community by providing livelihood opportunities to women.
