NEW BLOG OUT ! I wrote about the exciting new research from Dr Jim Rilling’s group on how the brain changes with grand parenting.

“ I often think of my Grandma, my dad’s mom. I grew up in the same town as my grandparents in the Okanagan Valley of Western Canada, spent many Sunday dinners at their place, and learned much about my Ukrainian heritage (my grandparents were children of immigrants) from them. Grandma played a significant role in my life, not only for aspects related to my heritage, but also in terms of what it is to be a woman, partner, and mother — in the absence of social norms.

Recently I’ve been wondering how I may have impacted her…”

I don’t think I’ve shred this on this new Mommy Brain Revisited account so here it is!

I while ago I wrote this blog for on why we need to revisit how we talk about Mommy Brain / Mom Brain / Baby Brain - the memory loss and brain fog that comes with motherhood.

In brief, your brain does amazing things when you become a parent. For sure changes in memory exist – both positive and negative (which I’ll talk about more soon) - but we need to shift the narrative to include all the changes that take place in your brain when you have a child.

Check it out - Mom Brain Rebranded - at Inspire the Mind or on my website https://www.jodipawluski.com/print .

This research also suggests that as you change and adapt to different parenting needs your parental brain likely changes too.

Here's a lovely brain image of where childbirth affects your brain when you are in your 50s or so (and your kids were birthed years earlier).

It’s from the work of Dr. Ann-Marie de Lange. I talk with her on episode 27 of podcast (link in profile).

It's exciting research showing the impact of childbirth on brain aging.

Here you can see, in the image from one of her papers, brain regions showing the strongest association with number of previous childbirths.

These brain regions are important for emotional regulation, motivation, and learning - important factors for parenting.

To learn more check out the Mommy Brain Revisited Podcast #27 .

Have questions? Let me know. I always look forward to hearing from you.

Let’s talk for a moment.

Surprise, surprise - there are long lasting changes in the brain of moms and dads - even into their 70s!

These changes are, for the most part, positive - which means you won't have brain fog or forgetfulness forever - and at times are more pronounced in the mother (birthing parent).

Take home - parenting changes your brain and likely continues to change it as you parent.

I think this is pretty exciting, don’t you?

I have 3 episodes of Mommy Brain Revisited podcast on parenting and brain aging:

🧠Episode 15 with Winnie Orchard (soon to be Dr)
🧠Episode 26 with Dr Ann-Marie De Lange

Mom-baby neural synchrony! ❤️

I love this research which investigates how brain activity in the mom (or an adult) and brain activity in a baby can be paired together.

When talking about parenting we often think of behavioural synchrony - or responding appropriately to baby - but now we know brain synchrony happens too!

I thought I'd highlight that there are two episodes of Mommy Brain Revisited Podcast on this topic:

🧠Episode 30 with Dr Ruth Feldman

🧠Episode 24 with Dr Victoria Leong.

These two researchers lead groups looking at different aspects of mom-baby brain synchrony.

It's a fascinating area of research and amazing to see how the parental and baby brain work together.

🦩time! You're probably thinking what on earth do flamingos have to do with our mom/parent brains.

Well they are a reminder of how much we change when becoming a mom.

Flamingos are pink (or orangish depending on what they eat) because of what they eat and it takes time to become this color.

Flamingo moms are white and this is because they are 'drained' of their pink color when they parent.

Their color is a visible marker of wellness.

When they are pink again they will breed.

I was reminded of this while watching Life in Color narrated by the always enjoyable Sir David Attenborough ().

He says this about why flamingo moms are white:
"She put all her surplus food and energy into producing an egg and then feeding her chick. She will need time to rebuild up the body reserves needed to regrow pink feathers and breed."

What a good reminder of the impact that parenting has on us.

If only we had a color marker to indicate all the changes we go through and the energy that parenting takes.

When talking about dad brains - experience matters and I also like to think motivation matters as well.

We know that many of the brain areas important in mothers / birth-parents are also important in fathers / non-birth parents.

These brain areas include the amygdala, nucleus accumbens, and prefrontal cortical areas, to name a few.

I look at things this way, being pregnant can set up your brain to learn rapidly how to care for your baby, but anyone can parent and their brain will change with experience and practice.

There are many right ways to parent and likely, when looking at the details, there are many 'parental brains'. 😉

For more about fatherhood and the brain check out Episodes 7 and 29 of Mommy Brain Revisited podcast.

Did you know that the extent to which you brain changes with motherhood is the same as how a female brain changes during adolescence- At least in the research that’s been conducted so far by Dr S Carmona and team in Madrid.

They looked at cortical thickness of the brain in moms, adolescent girls and adult non moms.

They found that the moms and adolescent girls were matched for changes in all measures of thickness.

These changes weren't huge (

09/12/2021

Let's talk about maternal mental illness and the brain for a second.

For me, mental illness always implies brain changes but unfortunately we don't know enough about these brain changes with mental illness in pregnancy and postpartum.

We do know that research is starting to point to a unique neural profile with postpartum mental illness.

This neural profile involves similar brain areas as with mental illness at other times in life, BUT the brain activity of these areas with mental illness during the postpartum is different.

We have yet to fully understand how the brain changes with mental illness in pregnancy but hopefully we will get there soon.

We need more research understanding the unique neurobiology of maternal mental illness so that we can optimize treatments as well as reduce risk.

That’s part of why I do what I do.

Too often we focus on the baby and forget that it takes two, or three or four or more, to raise a little one.

We often hear that brain development in infancy and early childhood is vital, which it is, but our brain changes throughout our lives - especially while parenting.

This is why it's important to remember that it's not just about the baby, its about the parent too.

Quote from a fantastic article I was in in 2020 by . - This Is Your Brain On Motherhood: How pregnancy and parenthood kick neurological development into high gear.
