Remembering Max Julien (July 12, 1933 – January 1, 2022).
Max Julien's first theatrical appearance was in 1966 in "The Black Klansman." When he walked into the bar wearing shades, his presence was cool but firm when he turned to everyone and yelled, "You're all just a bunch of cowardly Uncle Toms," while gazing at the confused patrons. At that moment, you knew he was a refreshed type of Black actor and necessary for the expansion of Black people in Hollywood. Julien starred in several films in the late 60s, including the Cleveland, Ohio classic, "Uptight" (1968). In the early 70s, Julien helped pioneer the new wave of Black films taking over Hollywood, known as Blaxploitation movies.
He was the star of "The Mack" (1973), where he played the contentious role of a pimp. His smooth talk and immaculate disposition made the film highly quotable, and hip-hop producers sampled many sound bits from the movie. "We can settle this like you got some class, or we can get into some gangster sh*t."
Julien wrote and co-produced "Cleopatra Jones" (1973) and starred, wrote, and co-produced "Thomasine & Bushrod" (1974). Julien didn't appear again on screen until 1997 in the film "How to be a Player." His last credit was in 2005, ending his career with 15 total.
