Sethi announced that there is no red line on hosting PSL and international matches in Peshawar.
“Once the stadium is ready in six-month time, we will be ready to host top matches in Peshawar. No hurdle bars us from hosting matches there. The same view was for Karachi, where we hosted big international matches against the West Indies”, said Sethi
Sethi added that his committee would require time to go into the details and decide on different matters. “I am thankful to the Prime Minister for granting trust in me. With the revival of the 2014 constitution, we would be in a position to deliver jobs to the youngsters who were deprived of their right to play for departments. We are here to solve the concerns of cricketers. Governments get involved when it comes to playing against India.”

The Taliban have banned women from universities in Afghanistan, sparking international condemnation and despair among young people in the country.
The higher education minister announced the regression on Tuesday, saying it would take immediate effect.

The ban further restricts women's education - girls have already been excluded from secondary schools since the Taliban returned last year.

Some women staged protests in the capital Kabul on Wednesday.
"Today we come out on the streets of Kabul to raise our voices against the closure of the girls' universities," protesters from the Afghanistan Women's Unity and Solidarity group said.

The small demonstrations were quickly shut down by Taliban officials.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif Tuesday maintained that the incompetence of deposed prime minister Imran Khan cannot be blamed on former chief of army staff General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, as it was not his fault.

Calling out the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief's behaviour "shameful", the defence minister said that Khan enjoyed Gen (retd) Bajwa's support for as long as he could, but was now speaking ill about him.

“Nothing is more shameful than disgracing your benefactor,” Asif said, speaking with journalists outside the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) office in Islamabad

Imran's tirade against the former army chief has not ceased yet and in his latest remarks against Gen (retd) Bajwa, he blamed him for the PTI government's ouster.

The minister added that the incumbent government was trying to clean the mess left by the PTI in its four years tenure.

In the wake of trouble at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Chaman, authorities of both countries Tuesday held a flag meeting to resolve tensions —including the border and fencing matters via bilateral contacts and consultations.

The development comes days after immense hostility as officials of both nations meet at the Friendship Gate in Chaman following a successful intervention by the local tribal council — tasked to ease up the situation between Pakistan and Afghanistan’s border forces.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said Tuesday that Pakistan and the United States relations are being reshaped, with an emphasis on creating economic opportunities.

In an interview with MSNBC, he said with consistent engagement at high levels and bilateral exchanges, the relations between Islamabad and Washington are moving ahead positively.
The foreign minister said the nations could build a sustainable long-term partnership, which is in the interest of the people of both countries.

FM Bilawal said in the past, 90% of the conversation between the two countries used to be on terrorism. However, currently, "90% of the discussion takes place on economic cooperation and other areas, including terrorism".

“This is a positive sign for Pakistan-US relations. We can’t change what happened in the past. We can learn from the past and engage with each other with realistic expectations,” the foreign minister remarked.

Regarding climate change and recent floods in Pakistan, he said the country has started to prepare National Adaptation Plan for building resilience to climate change.

The foreign minister said to become a climate-resilient country, Pakistan needs to invest in energy transition, which requires international support.

Counting on the losses caused by recent floods that have washed away 10% of Pakistan’s GDP, he stressed that adaptation is needed in a manner that if we face such catastrophe in future, we should be in a better position to cope with it.

An accountability court on Monday extended pre-arrest interim bail of former chief minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar till January 5 in an illegal liquor licence case.

Accountability Court Judge Naseem Ahmad Virk conducted the hearing on the bail application of the former chief minister.

Usman Buzdar also appeared before the court on expiry of his interim bail. The National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) investigation officer submitted that the NAB regional board had recommended closing the inquiry into the illegal liquor licence case and the matter had been sent to NAB headquarters for final decision.

He further submitted that only the NAB headquarters had the powers to close the inquiry. At this, the court adjourned further hearing till January 5 and sought a report, besides extending pre-arrest interim bail of the former chief minister.

The NAB launched investigations against Usman Buzdar and officials of Excise & Taxation Department Punjab on charges of misuse of authority, corruption and corrupt practices. It was alleged that the accused issued an illegal liquor licence to an under-construction hotel in violation of rules.

The Lahore High Court ordered the federal government to provide full information on the Toshakhana gifts that foreign officials, including politicians, have received since Pakistan’s creation on Monday.

A citizen named Munir Ahmad asked the court for guidance on how to make public the details of Toshakhana gifts given to officials by foreign dignitaries, and Justice Asim Hafeez heard his request.

During the hearing, the federal government lawyer opposed the petition, contending that details about the Toshakhana could not be revealed. The judge then questioned the secrecy of state depository gifts, mentioning that politicians and bureaucrats declared these in tax returns.

After arguments, Justice Hafeez ordered the Sharif government to provide details of gifts given from Toshakhana by January 16.

As more audio recordings of Imran Khan’s wife discussing the sale of gifts that the PTI leader had received from Gulf nations surfaced, the Toshakhana matter continued to make national headlines.

Imran Khan was disqualified from serving in parliament earlier this year by Pakistan’s top electoral watchdog because Khan failed to disclose the assets in his declarations to the ECP.

Twitter said on Sunday that it would remove accounts created solely for the purpose of promoting other social platforms and content that contains links or usernames.

The move would impact content from platforms like Meta Platforms Facebook and Instagram, along with Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post while allowing cross-content posting, Twitter said in a tweet.

Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who recently invested in social media platform Nostr, replied to the Twitter support post with one word: “Why?”

In reply to another user posting about the Nostr promotion ban, Dorsey said “doesn’t make sense”.

Short video-platform TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance Ltd, was not included in the list.

Last week, Twitter disbanded its Trust and Safety Council, a volunteer group formed in 2016 to advise the social media platform on site decisions.

The policy change follows other chaotic actions at Twitter since Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, bought the social network. He fired top management and laid off about half of its workforce, while seesawing on how much to charge for Twitter’s subscription service Twitter Blue.

The United Nations on Thursday said emergency food aid for devastated flood-hit communities in Pakistan would run out in January after a funding appeal received only a third of its target.

The country was lashed by unprecedented monsoon rains over the summer that put a third of the country underwater, damaged two million homes and killed more than 1,700 people.

“It is a big concern for us to ensure food security in the coming days and weeks for the people affected by rains,” UN Resident Coordinator for Pakistan Julien Harneis told a press conference in Islamabad.

The UN had appealed for more than $816 million but said its agencies and other NGOs have only received $262 million from international donors.

Four days after Afghan authorities “apologised” to Islamabad over cross-border shelling that claimed the lives of eight people, armed clashes erupted between security forces from Pakistan and Afghanistan at the border in Chaman on Thursday, leaving at least one dead and 15 others injured.

In a statement, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) — the military’s media wing — said indiscriminate fire from inside Afghanistan on the civilian population of Chaman, that continued intermittently through the day, left many innocent civilians injured.

“The injured include innocent women and children,” ISPR said.

However, Kabul appeared to blame Pakistan for the act of aggression. In a post on Twitter, the Taliban ministry of defence claimed that Pakistani forces had opened fire first, and called for a resolution of the issue through negotiations.

The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Wednesday approved an amendment to the Constitution to give women equal representation in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

At least two of the four ECP members will be female according to this amendment.

The Senate panel, which met under the chairmanship of Barrister Syed Ali Zafar, discussed some crucial constitutional amendments and finally approved the new composition of the commission.

The original proposal was to increase the strength of existing ECP from four to eight, with an equal representation of men and women.

However, it was decided by a majority vote that the total number of members shall remain four. After a thorough discussion, the senators agreed that women and men should have equal representation as members of the commission.

12/12/2022

The Government is grateful for the services of polio workers, who despite suffering losses in the catastrophic floods continued to assist with flood relief activities, said Federal Minister for Health Abdul Qadir Patel on Friday.
At a ceremony held in Thatta, the Health Minister distributed cheques among frontline workers whose homes were either washed away in the floods or were partially damaged.
“I salute your courage and passion. Despite suffering losses, you came to the aid of your fellow citizens and supported the Government in flood relief operations,” he said.
The Pakistan Polio Programme had conducted a comprehensive assessment of the damages that polio workers suffered this summer when unprecedented rains and flooding affected 33 million people and left a third of the country under water.
“I understand your pain and have therefore requested the authorities of the NEOC that our polio workers should be compensated as much as possible because we can’t leave our people alone in this testing time,” the Minister said.
“Our first priority is always polio workers. Their services to Pakistan are immeasurable,” said National Emergency Operations Centre Coordinator Dr. Shahzad Baig.
“It was a huge task to identify the workers affected by the floods, complete their documentation and offer these cheques. There are over 350,000 frontline staff and we conducted an extensive exercise in all provinces to assess the impact of the floods on our teams, Dr. Baig added.
Nearly 12,500 polio health workers were affected by the floods, according to the polio programme’s assessment, with a majority of them in Sindh and Balochistan.
The government will be distributing cheques worth nearly Rs250 million to polio health workers around the country.

After several false starts, Twitter announced on Saturday it would relaunch its subscription service next week, including a system for authenticating accounts on the platform.
“We’re relaunching on Monday — subscribe on web for $8/month or on (Apple’s) iOS for $11/month to get access to subscriber-only features, including the blue checkmark,” the company tweeted.
A blue checkmark on an account, which indicates it has been verified by Twitter, was previously free but reserved for organizations and public figures in an attempt to avoid impersonation and misinformation.
After buying Twitter in October, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced his intention to diversify the company’s revenue stream beyond advertising, turning to new paying formulas for premium features.
A first version was launched 10 days after Musk took control in early November, but it caused an uproar when many fake accounts popped up pretending to be celebrities or companies. The version was quickly suspended.
