REFLECTIONS FROM A LIBERATOR |

At the WWII Veterans History Project, we remember the Holocaust by preserving the memories of the American soldiers who witnessed the N**i horrors firsthand and liberated the infamous concentration camps in the final months of WWII. One of those soldiers was Julius Haberman, a Technician Fifth Grade serving with the 69th Infantry Division. On April 19, 1945, Julius and his unit discovered Leipzig-Thekla, a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp, which, at its height, held approximately 1,400 prisoners. When the men of the 69th reached the camp, there were fewer than 100 survivors.

The surviving prisoners were suffering from severe malnutrition, typhus, malaria, dysentery, among dozens of other deadly illnesses and epidemics. "I felt very badly for what they were going through and what I had seen," Julius remembered. "Mounds of bodies were on the other side of the camp there…it was difficult."

As a Jewish soldier, he expressed how personal the liberation was for him. "I knew that these prisoners were Jews that were on the other side of the fence. I really couldn't speak to them much, but I could say a few words because I knew Yiddish and was able to speak a little bit and be an interpreter."

Infantrymen like Julius didn't remain at the camp long, but he vividly remembered how they "gave the prisoners as many ci******es as we could, as much chocolate as we could, and any food that we had."
