OBITUARY
Deeply saddened by the passing of Wee Cho Yaw.
Cho Yaw was a titan of Singapore’s banking industry. His distinguished career spanned more than 60 years at UOB, much of it at its helm. His business acumen and visionary leadership were instrumental in growing UOB into one of the most successful banks in Singapore and the region.
Beyond the corporate world, Cho Yaw made significant contributions to the community. He was actively involved in the promotion of the Chinese language, culture, and values, and took on key leadership roles. The community continues to benefit greatly from the Wee Foundation, which was set up in 2009 to promote the Chinese language and culture in Singapore, as well as provide education and welfare assistance to those in need.
Cho Yaw was also passionate about education. As Chairman of the Nanyang University Council, he oversaw the difficult process of merging Nanyang University with the University of Singapore to form the National University of Singapore, thereafter serving on the NUS Council till 2000. In 2004, he became a pro-chancellor of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he established a scholarship fund to support students pursuing postgraduate finance degrees at the Nanyang Business School. The UOB Wee Cho Yaw Future Leaders Award, launched in 2015 to assist less privileged students studying at NTU and NUS, is a fitting tribute to Cho Yaw’s service and leadership.
For his achievements and contributions to Singapore, Cho Yaw was awarded the Public Service Star in 1974 and the Distinguished Service Order in 2011.
I have known Cho Yaw personally for four decades. When I was Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, overseeing major changes to the financial sector, I worked closely with him, and greatly valued his perspectives and advice. I will always warmly remember his passion and energy, and our many conversations across a wide range of issues over the years.
I offer my condolences to his family in this difficult time of sorrow and loss. – LHL

There have been several kings in the Ayutthaya and Thonburi periods who are best known by the title Ramathibodi ("Overlord Rama"). Ayutthya itself was borrowed from the name of Rama's capital in the Ramayana epic, Ayodhya. Still, most of the names of the earlier kings as given by historians are titles rather than real names. It was not customary to refer to a king by his name during his lifetime, and in many cases, the personal names of the kings are not known. Even the titles are often doubtful. Each king had his full style and title inscribed on a golden plate, which, however, were all lost when the Ayutthaya Kingdom was destroyed in the sack of the city by the Burmese in 1767.
