1971- Indira Gandhi "defeated" Raj Narain on Raebareli seat. Narain challenged the victory in the courts, accusing Gandhi of misusing power and hitting the expenses-ceiling.

12Jun'75 - Justice Sinha convicted Gandhi for electoral malpractices, corruption; disqualified & debarred her for holding any position for 6yrs.

During those days, Justice Sinha locked himself in his room to avoid any meeting that can influence his judgement.

Within hours, after the AIR broadcast, the verdict shook the nation. Justice Sinha not just unseated India’s most ruthless & powerful politician, but also a serving PM.

Opposition topped the gun and demanded immediate resignation from Mrs Gandhi.

But Gandhi always knew, keeping aside the high morals of democracy and all, she still hold the cards, including the Trump card.

Gandhi challenged Allahabad HC judgement in the Supreme Court.

24Jun'75- after 12 days of HC verdict, Justice VR Krishna Iyer of the SC granted interim relief and a conditional stay on HC judgement. Still debarred from participating into parliamentary proceedings & drawing a MP salary, SC allowed her to "continue as PM". And that's it!

Very next day on..

25Jun'75- STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED.
