I look forward to Sunday mornings all week.
Where have the last 11 years gone?? They truly do grow up entirely too fast.
I cannot wait to start this! I haven't dove into a book series in a long time. Don't get me wrong I've been reading, Nat and I are almost done with Matilda and Bean and I are almost done with The Phantom Tollbooth, but I haven't read anything for myself. This statement also doesn't count the audio books I listen to while doing chores or processing orders.
When the boys in the house decided to venture into the world of tarantulas I only had one rule....
They better never, never, EVER escape.
Thats how I got here.
Woke up to a spider the size of my youngest hand hanging out on my ceiling. NATURALLY the Mr was already at work. I am truly blessed this kid loves spiders. He always has ever since he was little, he would seek them out which is why this was a great hobby for the two of them together.
It took tackling his fear of heights, faced climbing higher on the ladder than he truly wanted to, to rescue this ghost tree spider from my bedroom ceiling.
Yes he got it. Yes it is back in a locked enclosure and we only ended up being 15 minutes late to co-op
Throwback. These girlies love going to church and it brings me such joy that Bean chooses to stay with me for the sermon. We are blessed to have found a group of pastors that makes things relatable. She often refers to their jokes throughout the week. Our current favorite is a vegan joke that was made. I haven't had a church family in close to 20 years. I just never found one that clicked, and I have missed the sense of community that I once had when my oldest was just little. Our new community is full of loving elders who want to see you succeed in life, fellow homeschoolers with like minds and some unexpected friends. Sunday mornings have become a time of self care for me, becoming just as important to me as my weekly lunch dates with my best friends and nightly downtime with my husband.
If men can do it, women can do it. It took me 12 long days but I did it. I built 2 quail cages (one is inside the coop with a tunnel connecting so they can get out of the wind and rain, converted the shed into a coop including those beautiful doors and new flooring, rewired the run and sealed it in and lastly 16ft of 32ft of fencing put up. I still have to finish the fence, build the dog run, landscape the pool and build the fit pit. I cannot wait to enjoy it all this summer.
Extremely cold and windy today. So glad I winterized the chickens last month but I still feel bad for them. Scrambled them some eggs for some extra protein today to help keep their body temperature up
Such a long day but this beauty is done and all our birds are so happy! The Mr got his first sunburn of the year during the build and I honestly had to giggle. I've been outside all summer and have a beautiful base tan plus the heat and sun doesn't bother me. He on the other hand has none of those things lol
Our girls are finally laying! Tonight we got 5 eggs.
Waiting for eggs to fully hatch is worse than waiting for a baby to be delivered
As our school year is slowing coming to a slow down I have found that Little G is fighting against it and asking for more and more work. I truly don't mind at all! She is the first one to the table and the first one to ask for more. I love that I can help them with their studies and teach them hands on around the house and homestead.
A few weeks ago our first set of quail eggs arrived! I ordered from and was on pins and needles waiting for them to get here. I cannot wait to share the updates. This is a journey we have truly enjoyed being on. I do have to remind the girls every once and a while that they aren't pets they are food which I am sure will get harder to understand once they have hatched and we have little chicks.
I have always tried to at least take one day off a week. A day off from the business, a day off from the co-op, a day to just chill with the family. The thing is I know I have been called to serve. It is why I run our homeschool co-op, it is why I go out of my way to help other families, friends and family. So when I had a dream the other night telling me I needed to serve my family more it wasn't a surprise. I began deep diving into the old ways of housekeeping and farming and gardening. I knew I was headed down the right path, it all just felt right. It is how I was raised so it all fit together like a puzzle piece. Now I am on my mission for my family.
I never saw myself as a dog person. It was always the Mr who wanted a dog and I just put up with it. Fast forward a few years and I decided to get a puppy. We welcomed Rocky, an 8 week old husky/rottweiler who is now 5 months old and massive. Most recently we rescued Renegade from our local shelter. His story of so many of his kind. He is a husky/Australian cattle dog. He is a little over a year old and had been at the shelter longer than she wanted to admit to me. We knew he was hyper, we knew he would be a jumper and we knew he would need lots of exercise. He is absolutely perfect for keeping Rocky company. I officially have 3 dogs, which makes them a pack and I am their pack leader.

The Mr and I built the new quail coop this morning! I enjoy building with him it's like a Rollercoaster ride....it starts out okay, then we question each other and it starts getting scary then once we realize we aren't working against each other and we work as a team it is downhill smooth sailing. I'll be honest I didn't want to get the new coop but he insisted and I'm so glad I did. This means eggs head to the incubator tomorrow now that we have room for more babies! #couplesthatbuildtogetherstaytogether #quailfarming #quailcoop #teamworkmakesourdreamreality #urbandhomestead
So much fun on our hike today! We went with some of our closest friends. We only did a total of 2 miles but the climbing the kids did doesn't count in that total. Surprisingly all of them loved it! Amelia asked if we could do it weekly and Gigi walked the entire way. Overall our field trip was a success! #homeschoolers #bestfriends #fieldtrip #desert #historical
Cooking with Gigi ep 2 Tonight we made brownies! super easy recipe using a chocolate cake mix, 1/2 oil, 2 eggs and 1 cup chocolate chips, mix and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. super easy and super fast when you need a sweet treat #baking #sweettreat #brownies
Come do farm chores with us! Even though right now we only have quail on our homestead the daily chores are necessary. We are also taking the opportunity to teach the kids responsibility and they have fun doing them! #farmchores #quaillife #quail #homeschoolfamily #suburbanhomestead
Our quail aviary is finally done! This took a lot of blood sweat and tears. It definitely was a team effort and I was sore for days lol the birds love it though. Now we wait for eggs! #quail #quailaviary #suburbanhomestead
Make orange Creamsicles with us! I got these adorable popsicle molds on Temu with the intention of never buying ice cream again. We eat a lot of ice cream, the kids have it nightly so I thought this might be a better way. #homemadepopsicles #orangecreamsicle #makingwithmama #kidsinthekitchen
At almost 4 weeks old these guys are almost ready to go outside. It's getting pretty cramped in there! Changed out the substrate from shredded paper to sand and it was thr best decision ever. #quail #quailbrooder #suburbanhomestead
Just a Saturday at the plant rescue aka nursery. I went looking for some rare veggies to plant but I forgot how much the Mr loves color and flowers so we filled the front flower bed. All those cactus though are destined for my front yard. I want an all native plant, desert plant and rock front yard. #plantnursery #roses #gardening #landscape
Skateboard for her birthday, inevitably falls, fractures her wrist and is told to stay off it. Same day at PE here she is. #skateboard #cantstopwontstop #homeschool #peclass
Even the kids get involved in training our pack. They have to learn to listen to everyone in the house not just me so they all take time to work with them. Not only does it build their confidence it shows the dogs we are the leaders not them. #dog #dogtraining #doglife #homeschool
First day of our spring co-op session! This term we made some major changes and made classes for 7 and up. We have a huge teen group and want to continue to see it grow! But teens have siblings so this term I took on the challenge of the sibling class on top of my admin role. I ended up with 16 kiddos aged 3-6. I based my 6 week lesson plan on science requirements for first grade so I wouldn't repeat anything they had done in previous classes. This week's themes was habitats. We did two group activities, had a snack session and had 4 tables with different habitats set up for a free play experience. I was worried it might be pure chaos but it went perfectly! We always end our day at the park for lunch with friends. #homeschoolcoop #homeschoolclass #habitats #homeschool
Finally got our new guy his tacticle vest and collar so he fits in with the rest of the pack. They all look so handsome! #dogmom #doglife #dogsofinstagram
Our babies are 7 days old! They are growing so fast it is hard to believe we will have eggs in about 5 weeks. The Mr is already pushing to order some more for the incubator. We will see. Right now we are content watching these ones grow and get their feathers. #quailchicks #quail #suburbanhomestead
When I made the first quail brooder box I had only intended 11 chicks to hatch not 20. Time for a bigger box! They have room now to stretch and jump around. They are already getting feathers and watching them flap them and try them out is super cute! #quailchicks #brooderbox #suburbanhomestead
Stop and reward yourself for doing things you already have to do! It makes doing them less terrible. #groceryshopping #rewardyourself #treatyoself
We woke up to a total of 17 hatchlings. Later in the day 3 more surprisingly hatched. We started with 30 eggs and got 20 chicks! #quailchicks #quailhatch #suburbanhomestead
After cleaning the box this morning we tried giving them some apples. They don't seem interested yet. I won't leave them in there long so the bedding doesn't get all gross. #quailchicks #suburbanhomestead #quail
Potatoes are one thing we go through A LOT of so I knew it needed to be one of the things we grew this season. I love getting the kids out in the garden whether they are digging in the dirt, helping me transplant or are just hanging out with me. It's a pleasure to have them around. #suburbanhomestead #homeschool #gardening
