We had a moving and informative event last night!

More than 30 Santa Cruz County community members came to the 418 Project on Thursday to hear local city and law enforcement officials discuss positives and negatives surrounding the city and county’s housing crisis. While there are more resources on the law enforcement side, many social workers…

Join us tonight!

Today I’ll be helping film/record a performance and panel discussion at the screening of a beautiful documentary project I filmed a bit on by Andrew Purchin - What’s Home? Creative Listening Across Differences down at the The 418 Project! It’s from 7-9pm, it’s also a fundraiser and tickets are donating based, I’ll drop the link in the comments below! And here’s some more info 🔽

Please join artist and documentarian Andrew Purchin and The Free Guide, a burgeoning homeless services provider in Santa Cruz County, for this exciting community-building event and fundraiser!

See excerpts from episodes of "What’s Home? Creative Listening Across Differences," a documentary film series in which thirteen Santa Cruz based visual artists, theater artists, choreographers, writers and musicians each collaborated with both an unhoused and a housed person to make new art. The project is designed to create an open-minded atmosphere of cooperation between those of us without homes and those of us who have reliable housing, so that we can address our mutual needs for well being, dignity, and safety.

Enjoy a live performance by rap artists Alwa Gordon and Alexandra the Author of the collaborative song "Don't Give Up On Me Now." Alwa conversed with unhoused musician Sonny Lopez and housed Santa Cruz Chief of Police Bernie Escalante as part of the documentary project. From those conversations, Alwa created a beautiful song which combines two intertwining melodies, reflecting a conversation between a person who lives in a stable household with privacy and another who doesn’t have this kind of shelter/security.

Join the conversation with Alwa Gordon and Alexandra the Author, Bernie Escalante, Sonny Lopez, and other panel members for a community discussion on housing and homelessness.

Meet Cynthia Strauss💫

The process of ‘Understanding comes in Fragments’

“The idea of spectrums has always fascinated me. Tipping points you might say. When does pedestrian movement become dance? When does a person become housed? Unhoused? When they sleep on their friend’s couch because they have nowhere else to go? Or when they sleeps on a hard, cold sidewalk? When do we develop empathy? When does the sound around us become music? When instruments are added? Or when a voice is added? This dance explores the idea that fragments of understanding are all we have until they coalesce into something greater.”

Q: What is Home to you?

What’s Home? Creative Listening Across Differences began with 10 artists each conversing with a houses person and an unhoused person separately.

Next, the artists each brought their two people together to explore this question & others in hopes of gaining a deeper insight into each other’s perspective.

Each artist has drawn inspiration from these conversations to make a new play, song dance of visual art piece sharing the broad range of housing scarcity stories that exist in Santa Cruz.

The completed performances will be premiered along with short documentary clips
📍Saturday, April 15th, 7pm at The 418 Project,
and the new artworks and corresponding short documentary clips will be exhibited at the
📍Radius Gallery at the Tannery Arts Center from April 13 - May 7.
