On this day in 2001.
Kellie Ann Carmichael (24) was staying at a hostel in Katoomba, New South Wales. That morning she walked into reception and informed the staff that she would be back later to pick up her belongings, she was never seen again.
She was meant to catch a flight from Sydney to head back home in Geelong but she never made the flight. When Kellie did not return home, her parents contacted the hostel on the 5th of May to discover her belongings were still there. Kellie’s parents travelled to Katoomba on May the 12th to collect their daughter’s belongings and to search for her.
Kellie’s ID, wallet, mobile phone, bankcard, Medicare card, camera and toiletries, were all included in her belongings.
Kellie’s parents and her brother spent a week in Katoomba searching for her to no avail.
Police originally believed that Kellie committed su***de, due to her being diagnosed with schizophrenia three years prior. Kellie was declared to be dead in 2009 by the coroner, unfortunately her remains have not been located, it is widely believed that she was murdered. One of the most prevalent theories is that Kellie was a victim of a serial killer who is hanging around the Blue Mountains.
The is currently a $200,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that would lead to a conviction to the person/s responsible for her disappearance/murder.
