*COVID-19: Edo records 72 new cases in 72 hours, 143 health workers infected*

Edo State has recorded 72 new cases of coronavirus in the last 72 hours, even as the number of health workers infected with the virus has risen to 143 in the state, in the wake of the second wave of the pandemic.

The Edo State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this in a virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

He said the 72 new cases recorded in the last 72 hours were reported from a total of 640 samples collected within the time frame, adding that the state currently has 306 active cases.

He added that within the 72-hour period, there were 34 new recoveries and three new deaths.

According to him, “44 of the 72 new cases were reported at the Real-Time PCR Laboratory at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) while 28 were reported at Laboratory at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH).”

Noting that the number of health workers infected have increased significantly, he said, “143 healthcare workers have been infected since the outbreak of the second wave of COVID-19 in the state. 110 of them are workers at ISTH, while 33 are staff of UBTH.”

He said since the outbreak of the second wave in the first week of December, the state has recorded 565 confirmed cases, with 248 recoveries and 15 deaths.
Dr. Obi added that there has been a 73.3 percent rise in numerical death of elderly persons, constituting two thirds of the total death recorded in the state from COVID-19.

*Court Dismisses AAC’s Suit Against Governor Godwin Obaseki*

A Federal High Court seating in Benin City, on Monday dismissed a suit filed by African Action Congress(AAC) challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

This suit against Governor Obaseki, PDP and INEC is on account of its candidate’s name not appearing on the ballot paper used in the conduct the Saturday, September 19th, 2020, governorship election in Edo State.

While ruling on whether the court has jurisdiction to rule on the issue, Justice Demi Ajayi-George held that the court can only use the claim of the plaintiffs/respondent to determine its jurisdiction on the matter.
She said that the plaintiff was not vigilant enough as they should have filed their suit within the 14 days time limit stipulated by the electoral law.

Justice Ajayi-George stated that since the plaintiff said that the INEC refused to accept the forms of the it’s candidate on two different occasions, the 6th and 8th of July, 2020, they should have immediately filed their suit in court as it is statue barred and not wait until 29th July, 2020 before doing so.

She however dismissed the suit for being caught in the web of statue barred. She awarded N100,000 as costs for damages to the defendants.

This ruling is coming on the heels of an Abuja High Court’s dismissal of a certificate Forgery suit against Obaseki, by the All Progressives Congress APC and its candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

ESAN MEGA CELEBRATE ESAN INTERNATIONAL DAY The true story of the Origin of Esan people of Edo State.

Formerly alot of people believe other tribes in edo are those who deserted the palace or the great Benin kingdom, due to conflicts or disagreements with the monarchs of that time.


The purpose of this write-up is to clarify with Archaeological evidence the origin of the Bini and Ishan people debunking the myth of oral traditions which hold no historical evidence.

The Esan people are a descendant of one Idu who emerged as the chief of a hill top settlement called 'Uhe', a people who had escaped the ravaging floods of the Benue pleatue area and sought refuge on the higher ground across the river Niger. Thus establishing Uhe in some location around 6th century A.D. Relying among other things of the historical dating and evidence of the NOK culture, who existed in that area around 1000 B.C. Further research records that the progenesis of Idu's children and the migrants that accompanied them from Uhe are the four clans we know today as Estako, Bini, Esan Urhobo (they are from same progenitor) inhabiting former mid-western Nigeria, Edo and Delta State.

The second grandson of Idu, called Esan n' Obhiodu (Esan the bravest) whose mother Ehi was Idu third daughter is the eponymous ancestor of the Esan clan.

Akka died in a place we now know today as Irrua and sometimes early in the 7th century A.D. His nephew Esan, choose to remain in the place his Uncle was buried. He told his younger Uncles, "Irru-uwa" meaning, 'i am home comfortable here'

Irrua became the nucleate home from which the Esan people evolved, there are those who choose to rely on accounts recorded of the large groups who broke away from Benin, in the middle of the 15 century during the reign of Oba Ewuare as the origin of Esan people. The movement titled Esanfua literally meaning "jumped off" has over the years been shortened to Esan and later corrupted by the colonial masters to Ishan.

Nevertheless linguistic evidence suggests that if the 15 century departure from the Benin was their origin, why the language differences and also the Esan people constantly fought wars with the Benin kingdom for centuries before the arrival of the colonial masters. Although there was a movement, but they where already established towns and cities outside of Benin kingdom, among which where the Esan people.

During the 16th century, the Uzea War occurred. This war was between the Uromi Kingdom and the Benin Kingdom. The war lasted from 1502 to 1503, and resulted from a refusal of friendship from Oba Ozolua of Benin by Onojie Agba of Uromi. The war ended at the town of Uzea, when both leaders were killed. However, in peaceful times Esan kingdoms would loan soldiers to the Benin Kingdom, such as during the Idah War of 1515-1516, and the sacking of Akure in 1823.

The Esan tribe where known for their military strengths in 1899 the British led an invasion into Esan kingdom, this lasted for seven years, and conquering Esan was far harder than the Benin kingdom. There are 35 established autonomous kingdom in Esanland.

The disbursement will take place at the popular *Vice Bar* located at No. 13 Isidahomen Street
Eguare *Ekpoma* Esan West LGA. by 1pm to 5pm.

As is usual in the past four years, each widow will be given a stipend of N15, 000 each to cover for the 3rd quarter (July, August and September 2020)

This present set of beneficiaries consist of eleven (11) Widows that cut across the five local governments that make up Esan Land.

To complement the event, the widows will be treated also to a sumptuous lunch to celebrate Christmas in a ceremony to be coordinated by the Esan Coordinator, Hon. Esther Eghaghe, and with the National Coordinator, Emmanuel Omonua and PRO, Fidelis Odiase in attendance.

EXPERTS SEE N10BN INCREASE WITH OBASEKI’S EDO TECH PARK PROJECT.

The Edo Tech Park being spearheaded by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has the potential of adding N10 billion to the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) at the park’s full maturity.

The projection is premised on an 8 percent job multiplier effect of the technology hub which is billed to train software engineers on high-end skills to work remotely from Benin City, for global clients.

According to a report released by technical partners on the project, Decagon, an elite software engineering and leadership training institute, "the Edo Tech Park will attract over a hundred (100) very senior anchor tech talents looking to leverage geographical arbitrage and tap into the more affordable living conditions and facilities."

“These anchor talents will also provide mentorship and career aspirations for new trained engineers in the Park,” it added.

Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is billed to launch the project on December 14, 2020, had in his inauguration speech noted that he was working on anchoring the state’s economy on technology, leveraging on the impact of digital technology, human capital and agriculture to drive industrialisation and economic growth.

According to the governor, “We are now gradually adjusting to the new realities of the times, what is now termed the ‘New Normal,’ which means that we have to restructure our systems, policies, plans and processes in line with the new reality. This therefore calls for the retooling of our workforce and deploying bespoke technology to embrace the change that is sweeping through the world and our dear country.”

“Technology, human capital and innovation will play critical roles in the new scheme of things within government and the larger economy. We are building the workforce of the future in Edo to attend to these new challenges.

“We have no doubt that we shall overcome these challenges if we emphasise and invest in our people, particularly our youths and redesign a government that is responsible and responsive to their needs,” he added.
