One of the many delights of Are Parents People? (1925) is the debonaire performance of Adolphe Menjou. Born in Pittsburgh in 1890, Menjou came to the movies in 1915, performing extra and bit work for several pioneer studios, including Edison, Biograph and Vitagraph. In 1921, he first achieved popular and critical recognition for his performance in Through the Back Door (1921) with Mary Pickford. More great roles followed in The Three Musketeers (1921), The Sheik (1921), and Charles Chaplin’s A Woman of Paris (1923). https://buff.ly/41RzoVS

In the sound era, he achieved a Best Actor nomination in 1931 for The Front Page, followed by excellent performances in A Farewell to Arms (1932), A Star is Born (1937) and many more. He played the slick lawyer Billy Flynn opposite Ginger Rogers in Roxie Hart (1942), which decades later became the basis of the musical Chicago. His last film appearance was in Walt Disney’s Pollyanna in 1960. He passed away in 1963 at the age of 73.

Don’t miss this chance to see suave Adolphe Menjou in his prime, in the delightful Are Parents People, with Betty Bronson and Florence Vidor and Adolph Menjou. Coming to the Woman's Club of Hollywood this weekend, Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. With live music by Cliff Retallick. https://buff.ly/41RzoVS

The Hollywood Forever Podcast would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Cinco de mayo!

Dolores del Río was one of the first Mexican-born actresses to achieve international stardom in Hollywood during the silent film era. She appeared in more than 50 films, including the silent films "What Price Glory?" (1926) and "Ramona" (1928), and the sound films "Bird of Paradise" (1932) and "Flor Silvestre" (1943). Del Río was also known for her beauty, talent, and versatility, and she helped pave the way for future generations of Latino actors and actresses. However, it's important to note that there were other Mexican actors who had achieved some level of success in Hollywood prior to del Río, such as Ramón Novarro and Lupe Vélez.

Mabel Normand was an American silent film actress, screenwriter, producer, and director who was one of the most popular stars of the Keystone Studios. She began her career as a model and was discovered by director Mack Sennett, who cast her in his short films. Normand quickly became a sensation and was known for her comedic timing, improvisation skills, and fearless stunts.

Normand went on to star in over 200 short films and several feature films, including "Tillie's Punctured Romance" and "Mickey". She also worked behind the scenes as a writer, producer, and director, and was instrumental in developing the careers of other Hollywood legends like Charlie Chaplin and Gloria Swanson.

Despite her success, Normand's career was plagued by personal and professional setbacks, including a highly-publicized scandal involving the murder of her lover, director William Desmond Taylor. However, she continued to work in the film industry until her death in 1930 at the age of 37. Mary Miles Minter was a talented actress who rose to fame during the silent film era. Born in 1902 in Shreveport, Louisiana, she began her career as a child actress and quickly became one of the most popular stars of the day. With her cherubic face and innocent demeanor, Minter captured the hearts of audiences around the world.

However, Minter's career came to an abrupt end in the early 1920s when she became embroiled in a scandal surrounding the murder of director William Desmond Taylor. Taylor was found shot to death in his home in 1922, and Minter was one of the last people to see him alive. She was also rumored to be his lover, and many believed that she was somehow involved in his death.

The scandal destroyed Minter's career and reputation. Though she was never formally charged with any crime, the accusations and negative publicity were enough to drive her out of Hollywood. She attempted to make a comeback in the 1930s, but her efforts were largely unsuccessful. She eventually retired from acting and lived out the rest of her life in relative obscurity.

Mary Miles Minter's story is a tragic one, but it's also a fascinating glimpse into the darker side of Hollywood history. Despite the scandal that overshadowed her career, Minter remains a beloved figure among fans of silent film.

If you're interested in learning more about Mary Miles Minter and her involvement in the William Desmond Taylor case, be sure to subscribe to our Podcast "The Hollywood Forever Podcast"! Our new episode delves deep into her story, exploring the highs and lows of her career and the mystery surrounding Taylor's death.
