One of the biggest misconceptions around hiring a social media manager is that bringing one onto your team will solve a sales problem 💵

Unfortunately, it's just not as simple as that. As a social media manager that focuses on organic social (meaning I strategize and create content that builds your community - I don't run ads) I can't guarantee sales. There's too much outside of my control to promise that investing in my service will lead to cash in the bank.

Does this mean social media management is a waste of money? I may be biased, but absolutely not ❌ It just means that you have to have the prep work done to make it worth your money, and realistic expectations.

So if you

👉🏻 know that the people you want to work with, or see purchase from you, are hanging out on Instagram (and let's face it, they *probably* are with 1.4 billion active users)
👉🏻 can see that your business is generating interest on your social but you're just not able to capitalize on it and nurture your community

Let's talk about my decision to outsource Pinterest (because I'm not just the person people outsource TO - I also do it for my own business).

I knew I wanted to jump on Pinterest, particularly for something I've got up my sleeve for later this year 👀 And while I'd used Pinterest before and knew the basics of the platform, I didn't have the capacity to learn the ins and outs, and really maximize its potential.

So, I outsourced (to who is a Pinterest GENIUS 🌟)

This means I get to spend my time on activities that are generate money NOW for my business - calls with clients, client work, service + product development...

AND I still get to benefit from the power of Pinterest because it's in the hands of a service provider that knows their sh**.

The biggest mistake you can make when it comes to your business's social media?

Hiring a social media manager at the wrong moment 😳

Whether that's too early, too late, or when you actually need a different type of support - you don't want to outsource to a social media manager if you're not actually ready to.

Here are a few of the things you need in place before you start working with a SMM for your business 👇🏻

🙋‍♀️ A willingness to delegate, let go of control, and trust their strategy. Working with a social media manager is a collaborative process, but if you're going to over-analyze every word choice or retain an ironclad grip on each piece of content, you're not going to get the most out of your investment.

📸 A content library for your social media manager to pull from. Unless your SMM is also a photographer and videographer (and you're paying them accordingly), you are responsible for providing the visual assets. In my packages, I do provide basic graphic design, video editing and stock photo/video curation, but without my client's photos and videos I won't have enough to work with.

💵 A willingness to invest. Social media management is not cheap (looking at you, job posting on upwork offering $3-5/hour 🥴), and it's a long-term commitment.

📋 A knowledge of your brand identity, positioning, future plans, and resources your SMM can use to learn more about you and what you do. Whether this is your blog, email newsletter, podcasts you've been on - we need to get in your heads and embody your brand, and these tools help us do so!

❌ And finally, understanding that whether your social media manager is doing their job or not is not determined by whether your sales are up or down. We can't guarantee sales and it would be unethical to do so.

Want to know how to tell that your social media strategy is working?

Hint: it’s not necessarily that you hit 10,000 followers 🤫

You can tell your strategy is paying off when

💫you’re achieving the goals you set💫

However, there are a few caveats to this blanket statement:

👉🏻 those goals must be REASONABLE based on your starting point and level of effort

👉🏻 you have to have given your strategy enough time to take effect (ie it’s not going to happen overnight)

👉🏻 and you’ve honestly been consistent with it

Not sure how to juggle the various content types on Insta? Keep reading ⤵️

There are a lot of options when it comes to posting on Instagram, and contrary to the *slight* hysteria being spread around the app, you shouldn’t ditch all the other content types to focus solely on reels.

Instead, know what each content type is best suited:

📲 use photo posts to show off your brand’s visual identity, connect to your followers (especially when you show your face!), and you want an easy engage - this is typically the content that generates the most LIKES & COMMENTS

📲 use stories to connect by showing more off-the-cuff moments of your life, & to convert your warmest audience

📲 use highlights to make the most important content about your business & services evergreen

📲 use carousels for educational posts with a lot of information - this is typically the type of content that generates the most SAVES

📲 use reels for entertainment, to show behind the scenes/you at work, and educational content - this is the content that typically generates the most REACH

📲 use graphics for highly shareable content like memes, tweets, and quotes. this is typically the type of content that generates the most SHARES

📲 and finally, use guides to store your content by topic and, similar to highlights, extend the lifetime of your posts by making them evergreen

and remember, all of these are suggestions - they are not hard and fast rules but rather best practices based on what I’ve seen on my own and client accounts ☺️

I don't even need to tell you to raise your hand if you've asked this question, because I KNOW you have 😉

The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong answer to the "how often should I post?" debate (except for nothing at all so I guess there's a minimum of at least 1 post in some time frame?) It all depends on YOUR business, YOUR capacity, and YOUR goals.

So rather than give you unhelpful blanket recommendations, here are the questions you should ask yourself when determining how often to post on social media:

👉🏻 how many platforms are you trying to juggle?

👉🏻 how much time do you have in your schedule to create & repurpose content?

👉🏻 how much time does each piece of content take you? (hint: this will vary across content types and platforms. for example, a blog post takes me anywhere from 45-90 minutes but I can film a tiktok in under 5 minutes)

👉🏻 do you have a strategy in place for repurposing content?

👉🏻 do you have any team members to support you in publishing content?

👉🏻 what are your goals for your social media marketing efforts?

All of these together can help you figure out how often you should be posting on social.

This is what a famous quote from a Chinese military general has to do with Instagram ⤵️

While Sun Tzu was discussing military endeavors, the general point applies to social media strategy as well.

Don't get me wrong - tactics like posting at optimal times and utilizing trending sounds can be a part of a strategy. We can't forget the first part of Sun Tzu's statement, that a strategy without tactics is a very slow road to achieving your goals.

👉🏻 But tactics alone, without a strategy in place to back them up and provide a purpose for using those tactics, is nothing more than simply noise.

Think of it this way: A popular Instagram coach might share a trending audio to use to increase your chances of going viral. But using that sound without a strategy only creates noise on your account. Do you know how to adapt that trend to your audience and what they care about? Are you sharing a message that will resonate with them and advance your overall business goals as well as increase your reach?

You can't overlook tactics when you create a strategy.

📲 But without a strategy, you won't be able to discern which tactics you should use and which to avoid, or understand how to track your progress.

Can I let you in on a secret (that I usually only share in my strategy sessions)?

There are VERY few rules when it comes to social media 🤯

Instead, what we’ve decided to regard as “rules” are more so best practices or suggestions. The only hard & fast rules come from a platform’s terms and conditions (like not copying content or harassing other users).

But “rules” on how often to post, how to use video in your strategy, how to grow - are actually best practices or suggestions, based on that person’s experience and/or research.

Does this mean you disregard those suggestions? No ❌ But for your own sanity, take them with a grain of salt, think about what will work best for you & your business, and stop feeling like you’re failing at social media if you don’t follow this rule or that rule.

But it also isn’t some insanely complicated thing you’ll never be able to figure out 😉

I see too many Instagram gurus & coaches position tips, tactics & hacks as a strategy.

But here’s what strategy *actually* is: Understanding what makes your business unique in your industry, your brand values, your goals when it comes to social media, the topics you’re going to share content on to work towards those goals, and how you’re going to measure success.

Once you have these things locked down, then we talk tactics: how frequently you’ll post, what types of content to share, and more.

But we can’t get into the nitty gritty until we nail down the core of what you do and what you want to get out of your presence on social media.
