Have you heard of Self-Determination Theory? It’s a balance of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation typically seen in athletes. It ranges from praise and rewards to personal goals of mastering tasks and having fun.

"There's never like this "ah-ha"-like, epiphany moment where you're like, 'damn now I'm really disciplined now I'm really dedicated.' It's just consistent effort over a long period of time. Now all of a sudden you look back and you recognize, like man, look at all of the things that I have done, look at all of the things that I have improved on, look at the progression that I've made, and look at the man that I've become in comparison to who I once was. And so that's what it was for me, there was never this moment where I stopped and said, 'man I'm a really good wrestler, I deserve to win now.' It was more that I just continue to train, I believed a little more every day, I showed up in the summer, I started going home a little less, I started working out a little more, I started giving myself permission to win, and then before I knew it, things were starting to occur and I just started to cling to it." - Jordan Burroughs

The phrase ‘mind over matter’ was uttered by Sir Charles Lyell in 1863. Today, it still holds up as a way for many of us to overcome obstacles both mental and physical.

"The one thing for me has been I really rely heavily on my mind to be successful and it really has never failed me because my body has grown in different waves and it was the runt, I had to develop the intangibles and then I was big and strong but I didn't really believe and now I'm getting older and so I'm losing the athleticism that I once possessed and so my mind has always been something that I can rely on. Like, although my body is dying, my mind is continuously being renewed. So I try to rely heavily on my spirit and mental toughness and those things kind of keep me in a position of power at every level. It's been a long journey but it's been a fun journey." - Jordan Burroughs

Our natural Flight or Fight response is a necessary survival trait but it can take up to 20-30 minutes for a body to calm after which is why control over these responses is crucial.

"Our brain doesn't know the difference between real stress and perceived stress. And so when you pick up your phone and you get that slack message, and it's, 'hey, are you going to make this deadline?' Or, 'hey, we have a meeting and 30 minutes, or you know, you pick up Twitter and you see something that makes you angry... 'How can these people think that? You start breathing through the chest - over-breathing because your fight or flight nervous system is turned on so your body thinks like, 'hey I could be in danger.' It creates that adrenal response and that response, in the past was reserved for times when you're actually in danger so blood flow goes to the brain, there's an adrenaline response, you're ready to run, you're ready to fight, which is great because you're ready to concentrate but that's not great to be in that state all the time." ” - Robbie Bent

Do you know the difference between being alone and being lonely? Loneliness is a feeling and it affects many people resulting in adverse mental and physical health including the way we breathe creating a double-edged sword of health issues.

"So 30% of North Americans right now have zero friends to confide in. And the paradox of the phone is, we have more access than we ever have before. But way more people feel super lonely and feel this ability to struggle to connect. So I'm really just passionate about allowing people to connect with more friends in an authentic way. And then through that, creating a first step to a happier life. So kind of like making mental health fun and cool. Mental health is amazing right now, there's a ton of different ways to look at it, you know, 14% of the population of North America meditates, for example. There are amazing meditation apps, amazing teachers, but what about the other 86% right? And to even admit vulnerability, admit struggle that's like, really difficult and kind of looked down on in society and so I want to make that cool and fun and use those things to draw people in." - Robbie Bent

M**A and Ayahuasca are among the trendiest recreational drugs for people who want to “find themselves'' but did you know these drugs are century-old medicines used for healing and ceremony?

"I've taken psychedelics since I was very young, probably younger than most people would recommend. I've been through that mental health odyssey which was, I guess a downward slide and I always knew and the people around me knew instinctively that one of the solutions to mental health and addiction even though we couldn't prove it because none of us were scientists probably lay in psychedelics. We used to compare the mental health of people who took psychedelics to the friends that drank a lot to deal with stress or the people that were completely cold turkey and were really edgy all the time and while saying how healthy they were and there was just something inherent in these compounds." No longer taboo, over 40 million Americans seek mental health yearly and the holistic and alternative medicine industry is on the rise.

"I think it's pretty clear that for a large percentage of the patient population that have either got mental health problems or addictions the status quo is simply not working and at best they're not getting better. Many people are actually getting worse due to the treatment regimes they're being forced into. We're trying to encourage a revolution in the way that mental health and addiction treatment is delivered based on psychedelic enhanced treatments." - Henri Sant-Cassia

While online shopping increased from 32.4% to 39% within the last year, did you know the cost of shipping those goods will also see a rise in emissions up to 250% by 2050?

"The shipping industry... very basic, the shipping industry runs off of the dirtiest fuel we have, heavy fuel oil and now diesel, cleaning up and still running off of sulfur diesel but all other transportation methods are converting over to decarbonized propulsion and power and the shipping industry is a little bit behind, and it's such a big industry, it's really complex so it's a tough one to solve for but that's what we're trying to solve for is how do we act as a catalyst to getting the shipping industry to decarbonize and what are the technologies, what are the first dominos that we can push over and that's what we've been working on at Switch Maritime." - Pace Ralli.

Want to end homelessness? Listen to this latest episode for the difference between charity and solving the problem through long-term addiction recovery.

"We've convinced a local strip mall that they used to give blankets, food, and money to the homeless and they were wondering why they always had homeless in their parking lot and why they were stealing, why they were begging, why they were harassing their customers. At the beginning of this year, we said, instead when you have a ‘homeless’, you call us, we send our intervention team down with a van and instead we get them new clothes, we give them a shower, we give them a meal, and we connect them with one of the current shelters and treatment. And the strip mall has been thrilled that there's been a dramatic change in the complexion of the visitors and how it looks. And now, when somebody shows up homeless they all rally and say, "quick, quick, call Vegas Stronger" and we come." - Dave Marlon, Recovery Advocate and Social Activist.
