Afro-Ecuadorians or Afroecuatorianos, are
Ecuadorians of predominantly African descent. That are the descendants of enslaved Africans transported by Spanish slavers through the middle passage. In 1553, the first enslaved Africans reached Ecuador in Quito from a slave ship heading to Peru stranded off the Ecuadorian coast. The enslaved Africans escaped and established maroon settlements in Esmeraldas, which became a haven. Many Africans fleeing slave conditions either ran there or had to live there.
Afro-Ecuadorians make up about seven to 10 % of the country's population, but their impact on Ecuador's food, music and traditions is undeniable. 🇪🇨

Mexico has a rich African heritage but also an adjacent history of oblivion.
People of African descent were vital to the early economic growth of Mexico, working in urban professions, developing and cultivating farmland, providing skilled labour in the silver mines, and working on cattle ranches and sugar plantations. African influence in Mexico can also be seen in the many cultural traditions of that country. The syncopation of much of traditional Mexican music has been attributed to a mixture of the country’s Spanish, indigenous and African elements. Mexico’s well-known Jarocho music, made famous through the song ‘La Bamba’, is African in origin.
The 2015 preliminary survey to the 2020 census allowed Afro-Mexicans to self-identify for the first time and recorded a total of 1.4 million (1.2 per cent of the population).

@Kari_mozart on what it means to be Afro-Mexican 🇲🇽
Despite the dominant narrative, African descendants also have a history and presence in Mexico. In 2015, the Mexican government conducted an interim census that incorporated African descendants into the categories of race and ethnicity, The survey from Mexico’s statistics institute estimated the Afro-Mexican population at 1.3 million.

Mwalimu Julius Nyerere epic response when asked whether Africa was ready for independence in 1959. If you come into my house and steal my jacket don't then ask me whether am ready for my jacket. The jacket was mine.

A gursha is an act of friendship and love in Ethiopia and Eritrea. During a meal with friends or family, it is a common custom to feed others in the group with one's hand by putting the rolled injera or a spoon full of other dishes into another's mouth. 🇪🇹 🇪🇷
