Everyone thinks that the English Language is America's official language, Lingua Franca; that's untrue. The United States is a nation built by immigrants of all races with distinct customs and languages. When the Europeans arrived in a geographical area now known as THE UNITED STATES, they brought with them their tradition, culture, language, and form of government; they had to adjust to a new political, social and economic environment, nonetheless, were still subjects of the British crown.
For many reasons, the British Empire lost control of the colonies. ( read about it here. https://www.facebook.com/111347887662066/posts/216550443808476/ )
By 1776, 13 colonies declared their independence and created a new nation called THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The constitution of the new State was written in English because a majority of the country's founding fathers were of British ancestry. The continental Congress had rejected bills to make English the official language of the US, calling it undemocratic and a threat to individual liberty. The colonies speak many languages, compelling them to stick on one was not a popular opinion.
Presently, at the Federal level, The U.S does not recognize English as an official language, but it has been designated as an official language at the state level.
Today, the US is home to approximately 331 million people, of which 300 million, or roughly 90% of the population, speak English. But millions of Americans also speak other languages. In fact, the US is home to speakers of at least 350 languages in total. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the US after English, and other languages with millions of speakers include Chinese, Tagalog (the national dialect of the Philippines), Vietnamese, and French (including French Creole).
Back to the question: what is the official language of the U.S?
Answer: The United States as a country has no official language.
