Christopher Currie’s grandparents came to Gary during the Great Migration. By 1970, the city was more than half Black. But many Black residents are leaving after economic and environmental decline. The same thing is happening to other Midwestern cities.
The first Great Black Migrations built the Midwest. In return, Black communities received pollution and toxic contamination.
