A Note From Arthur Schwartz: As May drew to a close, a senior was on my corner, (12th Street and 6th) every morning handing out flyers for locals to call their Assembly Member Deborah Glick. The woman was with Food and Water Watch, which has become one of the most effective organizations pushing to pass climate-saving legislation in Albany. Here is the message on the website....

While I was delivering newspapers to Cinema Village a worker named Jack Peterson told me that ten members of the theater’s staff were looking to start a union. In late April, the Cinema Village staff held a vote to determine if they would unionize and the result was a unanimous victory for the workers. This means they now have a union, but the question is what they will do with this new strength. Peterson answered four questions I had about this historic move for the oldest continuously operated cinema in Greenwich Village....

Going through hard times often makes us wake up to what is going on in us or around us and gets us to make some decisions about what we should do. It doesn’t feel good to not feel good. It begs the question, “What am I going to do about this?” And the answer, “For things to change, I have to do something about it because I can’t or don’t want to live like this.”...

Zinc Bar had just celebrated its 30th anniversary. The owner, Alex, recalled those early days when the fledgling club was only large enough to house guitar acts. That’s when the club was on Houston Street and they had not yet acquired a house piano. On April 29th, the guitar made its triumphant return to Zinc Bar as the predominant instrument with three legendary jazz guitarists – two long-time stalwarts and one pushing the boundaries of the instrument....

Willard Morgan is operator of Ideal Glass Studios, a small film stage/flexible space. The artist-run film and TV production studio was founded in 2004 by Morgan, a native New Yorker, actor, and artist. The website calls this space “extremely fun, decadent, and ultimately breathtaking.” The upstairs rooms look like an old brownstone parlor where you can film different sets, have a party or hold a fashion show....

Standing Up for a Century Poet Edward Field Turns 100 By D. Silverman The venerable Edward Field casts a long shadow across the streets of the Village, both “literarily” and “literally” — during daily walks upon the cobbled slopes — and, in June, his upright figure crosses the centennial riband. Edward was born in Brooklyn in 1924, grew up on Long Island, served a notable stint in the military during WWII, and after several extended sojourns abroad, eventually made Greenwich Village his home with his life-partner for more than half a century, Neil Derrick....

Bibliotheque NYC is a wine bar, café, and bookstore all rolled into one. It was started by Dr. Andrew Jacono and his son, A.J. in 2022. The Jaconos have created a beautiful space that houses over 10,000 books and 3,000 bottles of wine. Bibliotheque hosts author readings, wine tastings, art classes and musical acts in addition to serving food, pastries, snacks and wine. I had the pleasure of speaking with A.J. about the origins and operations of Bibliotheque....

Midway through my visit to Smacking Burger, Elizabeth Torres sends the man behind the register across the street to “the store with the green awning,” where an employee has requested a burger. Smacking only takes in-person orders, Torres explains when he called, the phone balanced between her ear and shoulder as she packs paper bags. So instead, she sends someone to physically take his order. This is the type of establishment that Smacking Burger strives to be. As much as it is inevitably a place to serve those who follow TikTok trends, it is just as much to serve those who work in the neighborhood. It is one of the rare spots that seamlessly bridges the gap between the trendy and the local....

Indigenous cultures who live intimately with nature consider it beneficial to spend time with trees. They believe that trees are sentient beings who sense our presence and are great teachers. Humans, as part of nature, were designed to live alongside trees as breathing partners, as they provide oxygen and remove carbon dioxide to refresh and cool the air we breathe. Trees also emit alkalizing negative ions, a healing energy that helps relieve pain and supports our immune system. Trees also calm the mind....

It was going to be a quiet April in this little corner of the Southwest Village with only me at home. “Character of the Village” is about regular people who are dedicated to the community. Scot Gropper, like several of our characters, objected to our offer by saying, “I’m just an ordinary person; I know many others who are more qualified.” But when your school-age child pipes in saying, “You should do it, Dad; it would be cool,” that is hard to turn down....
