Hi friends, Been a while since I checked in here.

My wife retired recently and life is different with both of us now retired. Our many gardens and yard gets tended to a bit more often now, and we are able to take Pearl (2014 Harley Ultra) for cruises more often. The pace has finally slowed and relaxation is a priority.

I decided to share some more of my many stories from the DJ days to this page soon. I was never a big name DJ, but the experiences I had are fun to reminisce about. Soon...

Btw... This was my very final broadcast, the last words I sent out over the radio airwaves...

(This used to be in my page's banner but FB isn't supporting video "covers" anymore. As of February 2022 Facebook took a giant step backwards in technology and only allow stills or GIFs as covers. smh) https://fb.watch/edxyYiuVNz/

Hi Friends, I had hoped to be a lot more active with stories of my career and DJing Old School.

Today a fellow DJ mentioned a nightclub called The Lamp Lighter. Which some of you know as Jammin's, the home of the Giant JukeBox that was the DJ booth. It was located On Robert T Longway Blvd between Dort and Center, next to the AC Spark Plug factory. I sure wished I had photos from those days.

So I posted this back to his comments and thought I'd bring it here too, to share with those of you that stop by every so often to reminisce with me.

"I did a lot of DJ fill-in in my younger days at all the nightclubs. Not much money but, wow... the social factor when Flint was filled with night clubs packed all the time!!
I have many stories about Jamin's.

I was called at the last minute (mid 80's) to cover a missing DJ. I walked in as a DJ not liking the new Karaoke scene that was starting to take over Band and DJ entertainment opportunities. I felt like who wants to sit and listen to Karen and Joe all night who can't hit a note or carry a tune? Right? lol

So as I step into the mighty Jukebox DJ booth I stumbled over a stack of Karaoke discs. This was before simple to use apps and software systems, we had to load huge discs the size of albums to play the lyric / video of early Karaoke. Yep, you guessed it... I was filling in on Karaoke night.

It was the early, early days of Karaoke shows where anything goes as long as I could find it. The DJ didn't have to sing to warm up the crowd and I wasn't dealing with bunches of rowdies all getting pushy to be next. I gave it my best effort, sang along accompanying those who wanted or needed an assist, and by the end of the night I was into it, and had a group enjoying the night. I had a music background as a Gospel singer. It was the only Karaoke show I ever hosted in my 30+ year career. Whew! lol

And the second story... well, lets just say the place was nicknamed the Tramp Lighter, a play on a previous name Lamplighter for a reason. Hot pickup spot and out in the industrial section of town. Nothing but nasty darkness and some woods just beyond the mostly dirt parking area. Most of us survived going there and closing down the bar. lol

I will add the Jukebox DJ booth was packed with junk gear and no place to stand. It smelled bad like the side walk out in front at closing. I remember it as a hole in the wall place, mostly dark and run down. There was the good times when the factories were in full swing and they served food and drinks all day and night. The volleyball team play was big there. You could really enjoy watching everyone play drunk volleyball. lol"

Been a while since I posted. Conversation on the Memories of Flint Facebook group recently showed a photo of the mall formerly known as Eastland Mall. And that brought back the memories for me.

I worked there in '77 / '78 at the Radio Shack. I was 20 / 21 at the time. I could tell endless stories of those times, including working in the Eastland (Courtland) Mall.

We would often be shoulder to shoulder with shoppers, crammed into the crowded Eastland. It was jam packed for a couple of months before Christmas of '77. The stores would open at 8am during the holidays and close at 10pm. I worked everyday, open to close for weeks.

Everyone working in the mall seemed like friends at the time. We'd take breaks, lunch, and even get together outside of work.

We were offering the Tandy / Radio Shack TRS 80 personal computer "on paper" (pay for it, get a receipt, and wait). We had a showroom model 4K and sold them in advance of receiving stock to sell them for Christmas '77. They never arrived in time for Christmas!

We were selling out 8 track tape decks as cassettes were becoming more popular for your car, and pushing 24 channel CB radios just before the newer 40 channel models were on the way. Add on sales for accessories made for some great commision checks! Give them a free battery and a card for monthly free batteries and you'd have a customer forever.

Santa's arrival and set up was super grand, center court! I can remember the never ending lines for pictures with Santa.

The Fry Station was in the east wing area right in front of Radio Shack. They were tasty and the smell of fries filled the mall in between the wafts of hot fresh candied almonds. The gals that worked there all seemed flirty. I think I dated a few.

I've seen a lot of changes since then that have pretty much devastated malls around the country.

I stayed with Radio Shack for about 3 years working at Yorkshire, South Dort, Richfield road, and managed Bridgeport's new store, and one in Mason, Mi too. I returned to broadcasting right after that joining the morning Zoo Crew at "Flint's Best Rock", 105FM WWCK in 1983. I was fortunate to be a member of the staff who set an Arbitron Rating record in 1984 of 18.4 making it the number 1 Album Oriented Rock Station in the nation. I stayed real busy back then. I established "Let's Dance" DJ service during that time and began regularly entertaining for the Flint University Club ('83 to '91).

I officially retired 10/08/21, with the sale of my entire DJ Business and my extremely unique Music Video Show. All gear and information related to my 29 year DJ service was included. No going back now!

About 20 years ago business was real good, and a young, talented, and locally well known Derek Sorenson worked with me. I put together an entire second DJ show and handled booking him into events his friends wanted to hire him for. He interned with me for a while and then worked on his own with a complete trailered show just for him. After a while the second show did not completely work out for me. 2 shows on a weekend meant about 3 times the work load for me to ensure everything came together. It was becoming an overload. We parted on good terms.

I had a severe health issue (chronic back pain) that I had battled with since 1991's two critical falling injuries to my lower spine related to a tall deck and slippery stairs. It all caught up to me as I aged and matters got worse, forcing me to end my career.

A very successful surgery in 2017 removed a cyst on my spine encroaching on the spinal cord inside my L4 and arthritic outgrowth was removed that had been pinching nerves in my spine. Not perfect but the relief has been positive, especially now 30 years since those injuries.

2012 was my last year of DJing actively in business.

I had called Derek and talked with him a few times over the next so many years hoping he’d get back into it and take over the business I worked so hard to build.

Most recently Derek called “out of the blue” as I was agonizing about how to store the gear other than continuing to fill up our basement and garage. During the summer we cleaned out both areas and I felt the need to “market” the show in some way to sell some, or all of it.

Derek, had always been an announcer for Mt. Morris (MI) school sports and later decided to enroll at Specs Howard School of Broadcasting to gain a wide range of skills to launch him into broadcasting. A recent move in his career has him taking the “hot seat” mid-days during the weekday at Flint’s WRSR 103.9, The Fox. Oddly enough I had worked there in 2018 for about 4 months. My very first day back on-air December 15th, 2018 is when my Tinnitus became triggered and came back with a vengeance. I had spoken to Derek about seeking a position there. Months later he took a position that has put him prominently in front of a desirable audience, some of which are now asking him for Mobile DJ service.

So, it’s with great happiness, and much pride, I congratulate Derek for being a successful on–air Radio Personality. I consider him my protégé and respect him like a son. I’m pleased that this has all worked to his advantage. Not every Mobile DJ gets to start out their business with so much going for them. I told him many years ago I’d help him any way possible. Little did I know about the final outcome? For now, I’m feeling blessed in so many ways.

So when Derek DJ’ed for my service I provided him with a tux. Not just any old black tux… He got the “Entertainer’s Jacket” I used to use. As a “gift” I passed that on to him along with his old tux slacks and a few bow tie ensembles. Here he is before, and now.

Dick Clark passed away April 18, 2012. He was a radio and television personality, television producer and game show host, as well as a cultural icon. He is best know for his hit show American Bandstand which many Michigan musical artist's made appearances on.

I grew up admiring Dick Clark so much! I was a faithful watcher of American Bandstand on Saturdays.

I adopted his showman style, adding it to my own. His "DJ" style, use of a podium, his adlib mixed with details during intros and including the audience in the show are just a few nuances I put in my shows too..

35 Years ago on this date I DJ'ed my last show on air at 105FM WWCK, Flint Best Rock. It was ranked the highest rated Album Orientated Rock Radio station in the nation and was rated 18.1 in Spring of 1984.

(Tap or Click the photo to start the video)

On Sunday, January 19th, 1986 I signed off from being a radio personality at 105FM WWCK Flint, Michigan, to focus all my efforts on running my DJ service "Let's Dance" Entertainment that I started in 1983. At that time I was working 3 On Air radio shifts, Friday midnight shift into the 6am of Saturday, my Sunday early morning shift engineering for the Live Mata Family show and producing and engineering Michael Moore's Radio Free Flint also started at 6am. My 6 hour Sunday evening shift was off network feed except my local 2 hour segment from 8 pm to 10 pm. I also was MC'ing 2 DJ shows with my own mobile sound and lighting system for the University Club Friday and Saturday nights. During that time I was expanding into more private parties including Wedding Receptions and a multitude of other special events from Proms, Homecomings, Friday night Teen Dances and Night Clubs.

The following "Air Check" has been edited down to just the announcing portions but to this day I have 66 hours (33 - 2 hour Sunday night shows) complete with all the music (off albums back then) and even the commercial breaks which are a "blast from the past" too.

For now I wanted to post this "treasure" from an era of history in Flint radio that I participated in. https://youtu.be/qk4ww_nrgXA

Another lifetime ago: The year was 1983 I had just started working for Flint's highly acclaimed 105FM WWCK Rock Radio. (Awarded the #1 AOR station in the nation in 1984) Even though I had just started as an intern, and was working my way up to being On Air for several years at WWCK, I was invited to the staff Holiday Party. So many years ago. I sure miss those days and all those friends. Hope you enjoy the flash back. Maybe help put some names with the photos as I can't remember a few. Love to hear your comments too.

Hello friends,

So much has happened this year (2019) and I won't bore you with every little nuance, let's just say I went back to working on the air in Flint radio at the Fox this time last year (2018) and triggered really bad Tinnitus that was exasperated by using headphones in the studio while on air.

Seems my 6 year hiatus from DJ'ing allowed for the gradual reduction of my hearing disease issues, primarily intense ringing, squealing sounds I heard, and my reduced ability to hear certain sounds, including my own voice clearly. Let this be another warning to those who work in loud, noisy, environments.

I will admit the return to radio was exciting but I was forced to resign to protect what's left of my hearing. Too many years of pumping loud jams into auditoriums, gyms, reception halls, but mostly the nightclub's I worked at.

I'm happily retired ... again.

I have one more show on 103.9 the FOX Saturday March 9th, 2019. 3p / 7p Streaming Worldwide on ClassicFox.com … one … last … time.

My Tinnitus condition has become considerably worse. Wearing headphones in the studio has increased the problem. The ringing, squealing and screeching noise I sense has become louder and is constant now.

Having taken this recent opportunity to return to DJing at WRSR at 61, no matter how short, provided me with many more fond memories of my days DJing in radio.

Good Bye DJ John Christian, So long DJ Johnny C … It’s just me … Signing off…

Turning 62 on the 27th will be quite the milestone for me.

On January 19th I performed my 6th radio show for 103.9 the Fox. On the 19th, in 1986, I ended my radio career with one final show at WWCK. I spent the next 30 years running my own mobile DJ show. That was 33 years ago.

Tonight I finished my 7th show. It's getting easier to operate the station but I still have a quiver of hesitation and nerves in my voice.

Basically in the last 7 weeks I have had a total of 28 hours of live rehearsal, not even a 40 hour week yet. I know this, and realize I still need more time to get past this "warm up" period.

Only time will tell ...

Update: 12/16/18

I felt it was not too bad of a show for the first time in 32 years.

Definitely had some good segments, and many more rough ones. Lots of room for improvement and plans to do so.

You can watch and study others for days, you can take notes, you can even rehearse, and until you set in the hot seat you just don't realize all the skill sets that come into play at the same moment in time.

First difficulty was adjusting to using headphones, which sounds simple enough until you discover the volume of your voice is buried under the music so you can't actually hear yourself talk. And it seemed to me there was a delay, or echo in my mix which didn't help timing at all. Also using headphones has triggered my tinnitus which had cleared up completely after 6 years since my days of doing the extremely loud mobile DJ shows.

The studio layout of interacting with an elevated touch screen computer off to my left, while running a multichannel audio mixing board in front of me on the console takes your mind away from focusing on what you are reading.

To say I was overwhelmed is putting it mildly. So with focus on better ways to operate the gear and scripting, I know with some more time I'll improve to a point I'll be more satisfied by my upcoming shows. John

1983 FLASHBACK on this TBT.

This is me at my very first wedding reception performance ever. I was DJing all kinds of events and had "some" experience with handling formalities.

I was contacted by long time friend Pete Flanders who had been operating a DJ service called "Cat and Company". Pete was known as Pete "The Fat Cat" Flanders in his early Rock and Roll days working with the well known DJ / promoter Peter C Cavanaugh at WTAC the Big 600 back in the 60s and 70s playing early rock and roll and sponsoring the famous Sherwood Forest Events.

The light show was Pete's basic rope lights and mirror ball, with a tiny strobe. The sound equipment was a hodge podge of records (45s) and cassettes, the mike was a Radio Shack Highball 2, the amp was a Hatachi tuner receiver and the speakers were my home stereo RS Mach 1's with a mounting bracket on tripods. The tux was an H&D rental.

So the story behind this photo was I was offered the choice of two shows, one in Davison and one in Clio, my hometown area. I took the Clio job only to find out it was a long time friend Clayton Holister's sister's reception. I had been friends with the Holister family for many years. The event was held across from Auto City Speedway at the VFW hall. By the time I ended my career in 2012 I had logged at least a hundred events at this little local hall.

As you can see the set up was a messy mess. lol As years would go by I focused on improving my gear, my presentation, my multiple tux wardrobe and mobile DJ'ed for the next 30 years. And this was not even the first chapter in my DJ career. Shortly after that event I began 8 years of entertaining at the University Club while starting my own entertainment company "Let's Dance" DJ Service and working on air at 105FM WWCK.

29/10/2017

Halloween always had been one of the biggest events of the year. Massive Fog shrouded dance floor, Brilliant white light strobing, and a dozen key, hot, Halloween videos splashed onto my 10 foot multimedia video screen. Of course dressing for the events with a simple, yet impressive costume was always the goal.

Of the events I used to do for Goodrich, New Lothrop, Mt. Morris, Clio, and several other Middle and High Schools, I performed annually for several years for a well known adult Ski Club (hint... based out of Mt. Holly) and their antics were "over the top". This group had monthly social events, beginning in the fall, that I DJ'ed for, and their Halloween event was always a "b***y" affair. Many of the costumes were "adult" and with drinks flowing it was a wild private party. Much like the Halloween events at the night clubs I used to DJ for too. It's hard to say, but if I was to guess, I probably entertained for close to 200 Halloween events in the 30 years I was in business
From 1983 to 1991 I was scheduled every year to entertain the major Halloween event held at the Flint University Club in downtown Flint where I entertained on a regular basis. One of the highlights was a haunted hall way, but the real fun began when it was time for the activity dances. Everyone from children to adults attended and participated. It was always a huge family event with the regular members.

After the University Club was closed (about 1996) and the Genesee Towers Building was reduced to a city park (2013) , I was invited by former members to entertain for their "lavish" parties for the Flint Golf Club for several years. The place was packed for Halloween. I had already been there for almost 3 hours preparing for the 4 hour event. Packing up and removing the show would take another hour and half. The Club's members and family were always responding extremely positive to the shows I put on for them.

The last Halloween party I entertained at was for Outdoor Adventures resorts. I spent 5 years (2005 - 2010) traveling to all of their resorts, entertaining on weekends during the summer when they were packed. It was at their New Years Eve party in 2010 where I severely re-injured my back attempting to move a rather large, heavy sub-woofer to re-position it during the party. The pain was excruciating and I had several hours left to stand and entertain, then remove my show. That was the beginning of the end for my entertainment service. I had a few shows in 2011 and 2012. By that time much had changed in the Mobile DJ world, both with number of clubs closed, the amount of advanced bookings, and the lower base pay rates our local economy could support.

Yes, I miss those days of "Bringing the Party". Back surgery this month (10/ 2017) may help me be able to go back to entertaining. It's been 20 years of back issues primarily from the abuse of moving, setting up and tearing down a major production of sound, video and lighting equipment. Who knows what the future will bring...
