In Awake in the Wild, Buddhist meditation teacher Mark Coleman writes that “Being in nature helps to calm the everyday thinking mind…the body feels more at ease outdoors, and the heart begins to open to and resonate with the peace, silence, and stillness of the natural world.” Nature meditation can help you cultivate a loving connection with yourself, the earth, and the entire web of life, he says.

Between the stresses of school and family life, changing hormones, and the continuing development of brain areas associated with self-control, it’s no wonder that teens feel emotions so intensely. For many teens, using drugs is a way to distract themselves or alter their emotions. However, there is a simpler, drug-free route to emotional control and a natural high: meditation. Study after study shows that meditation improves emotional well-being and can induce brain changes in the same regions impacted by drugs. Meditation therapy is one of the holistic approaches Destinations for Teens employs to help adolescents and young adults improve their mental health and overcome their substance abuse issues.

The essence of my work is to recognize pure awareness and rest in natural peace. One of the most important mentors of Stephan is Peter Fenner who calls this dimension of our being “Radiant Mind”. There are many other words which point to the same mystery like nondual awareness, Buddha-Nature, No-Mind, the ground of being or simply emptiness.

I have a big smile on my face as I write now — because for the first time ever, The Path is launching a certificate meditation teacher training program that you can join from anywhere in the world.

This course is perfect for you if you want to start guiding meditations, if you want to add meditation to your existing job as an executive, teacher, coach, therapist or more, or if you simply want to go further on your path, learning the key tenets of Buddhist wisdom and enjoying being part of a happy, inspiring community of meditators.

Everyone who graduates the course will be certified to teach mindfulness and compassion meditation to friends, family, colleagues, and anyone in your community. We’re calling this a Community Meditation Teacher Training, and we’d be honored to have you join us.

The entire course will be online, so we’re excited to welcome people from across the U.S. and around the globe. AND we’re taking special care to foster community during the course, so we make sure people emerge from the course not just with classmates, but friends.

Throughout the course people will be put in small “pods,” to foster community, ensure you have lots of practice teaching, and to let you discuss the Buddhist wisdom you are learning with classmates, so the teachings feel tangible, practical and accessible.

What does your ideal seating area look like? Is it a mossy glen, a large flat stone, a wooden deck surface, or a swing? What about the focal point? Do you prefer a small water feature, a stone altar, or statue of the Buddha? Or are you lucky enough to have a gorgeous natural focal point like an ocean view!!?

Take into account your own preferences for privacy. Many meditation gardens include cozy nooks, courtyards, or other private areas with a definitive sense of enclosure. These really are outdoor “rooms”, even if the walls are living bamboo and the roof is the canopy of a big old tree.

Draw out your design ideas on paper in plan view (birds-eye view). It’s best to draw roughly to scale if possible, but you can also just doodle and sketch your ideas.

It will take time and repetition to settle on your ideal meditation garden design. Whatever the actual design looks and feels like, the goal is to create a serene and tranquil space, right in your own backyard.

A wealth of clinical trials and research continues to show that meditation can help improve many health conditions including mental health concerns, cardiovascular disease, cognitive function, as well as help our nervous system cope with and become more resilient to stress. It is not surprising then that neuroimaging and brain scans show that meditation can literally change your brain. A number of areas in the brain change in response to meditation but the most important may be the amygdala, the part of your brain responsible for anxiety, fear and stress. People who practice regular meditation have been shown to have changes in the amygdala that result in a reduction of stress levels as well as an improved response to stress.

Meditation is essentially relaxation, so it should be done entirely at your convenience. Choose a time when you know you are not likely to be disturbed and have the freedom to relax and enjoy. The hours of sunrise and sunset are also ideal for meditation. These hours are the time when there is a serene calm at home too, which will help you to meditate easily.
