New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer aspirant, Alan Kyerematen has reassured party delegates of a landslide win against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) if he is elected to lead the party in the 2024 general elections.
The former trade and industry minister says the party would need an individual who can win votes from the opposition partyโs strongholds, particularly the Volta region.
Alan Cash, as heโs widely known, believes he is the right candidate who can be in a nip-and-tuck race against the NDC to ensure the NPP actualises its mantra, โbreak the eightโ.
He says his recent tour in the Volta regionโs capital, Ho, saw a mammoth welcome and jamboree, affirming their love for him.
Speaking to delegates at Besoro in the Ashanti region, Mr Kyerematen touted that the regionโs indigenes have assured of voting the NPP into power if he is elected as the presidential candidate.
โThe Volta region is the stronghold of the NDC. We need to elect someone who can beat the opposition there. When I went to the Volta region, they told me after the demise of J.J. Rawlings, I am their new favorite,โ he said.
The former minister also assured delegates of amassing votes in the swing regions including Western, Central and Greater Accra regions.
The Ashanti region has been the voting powerhouse of the ruling New Patriotic Party since the inception of the Fourth Republic.
In the last elections, the region voted over 1.5 million to elect the then Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo into his second term in office.
Mr. Kyerematen contends he can amass more votes for the party from the region if elected as flagbearer.
โI can win 2 million votes for the party in the Ashanti region. This can help the part

It is a project which is anticipated to help reduce traffic congestion at one of Accraโs hotspots, Circle, and its immediate environs.
However, construction works on the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange have stalled for several months with no hope in sight.
This has left road users and traders close to the site frustrated and inconvenienced each passing day.
Potholes, dust and clogged waters are visible everywhere around the construction site.
A visit to the site showed that the road keeps getting poorer whenever it rains, with no team on site to reshape it for motorists.
The $135 million-project could not meet the 2023 completion timeline due to financial constraints that compelled the contractor to abandon the site.
Resident Engineer for FAS Consult Limited Antwi Owusu Sekyere in April 2023 attributed the suspension of works on the project to governmentโs negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
โOnce the government finishes negotiations with the IMF, we will come back but it has been suspended. We have skeletal staff there โ they do watering and then they reshape the road anytime it goes bad.

The Management of the National Service Scheme (NSS) has assured that measures are being put in place to prevent overcrowding at the various registration centres across the country, following the release of the postings of a total of 12,295 nurses.
The Scheme, on Saturday, June 10, released the postings for personnel who enrolled to undertake their one-year mandatory national service at various accredited health facilities across the country for the 2023/2024 service year.
Ahead of validation and registration, the acting director of corporate affairs at the Scheme, Ambrose Entsiwah Junior, indicated that plans have already been made to reduce traffic at various registration centres.
โI must say that with this number, we will not be expecting huge numbers at the registration centres, so there should not be any traffic. It is usually when we post the main service personnel from tertiary institutions, and we are talking about over 150,000 or so, that is when we sometimes have traffic, but with these numbers, it is not likely that we will have traffic at the various registration centres.โ
Regional validation and registration will begin on Monday, June 12, 2023, and end on Friday, June 30, 2023, at all centres across the country.
Deployed nurses have also been directed to begin their mandatory national service on Monday, July 3, 2023, after the completion of their validation and registration process.

The Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly has begun dredging major river bodies and streams that pass through the municipality ahead of the rainy season.
According to the assembly, the estuary that connects to the Weija dam will also not be left out in the exercise while promising to demolish structures on waterways.
During the rainy season in 2022, the Weija Gbawe enclave was one of the hardest hit as hundreds of houses were submerged.
The spillage of the Weija dam did not also help matters as it went beyond its banks and destroyed properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis in the area.
The Weija Gbawe Assembly has thus begun desilting river bodies and streams that connect to the Weija dam.
Patrick Kumor, the Chief Executive for Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly, who embarked on an inspection tour of the ongoing dredging works said the exercise is meant to prevent flooding in the area this year.
He said the spillage of the Weija dam was a result of the dam overflowing its banks which contributed to flooding in the enclave.
Although the MCE admitted that financial challenges delayed the commencement of the dredging works, he was hopeful that major parts will be covered before the rains set in.
He urged various households within the Municipality to endeavour to clean the various gutters within their enclave.

The former Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, on Thursday rejected a seat offered to him by the leadership of the minority caucus.
The MP for Tamale South explained that the seat offered to him belonged to the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Collins Dauda, who is his senior colleague and hence cannot accept it.
He made this known during a contribution to a debate on the African Union Convention on Cross Border Cooperation also known as the Niamey convention while using the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusuโs seat.
He subsequently apologised to the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament for rather taking his seat and stated that he couldnโt have taken the seat offered to him because of his respect for elders.
โMr Speaker, forgive me if I had to assume your chair, there was whether I should take over from Collins Dauda and I told them that Collins is senior by age and I am somebody who is well trained at home so any other chair is acceptable to me, I am still the elected Member of Parliament for Tamale South.โ
Cassiel Ato Forson replaced Haruna Iddrisu as the Minority Leader on January 24 after executives of the NDC decided to reshuffle their leadership.
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle also replaced Ketu North MP, James Klutse Avedzi as the Deputy Minority Leader while Kwame Governs Agbodza replaced Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak as the Minority Chief Whip.

The Minority in Parliament has alleged that the government is set to either cancel or suspend sixty ongoing projects across the country as part of measures to execute its domestic debt exchange programme.
Ken Ofori-Atta in the 2023 budget, announced a halt in capital projects in line with revenue rationalisation measures.
Speaking to journalists, the Minority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza said the suspension of the projects would lead to about 3 million job losses hence the need for the government to be transparent about the conditions of the IMF deal.
Mr. Agbodza told the Parliamentary Press Corps, โas we sit here, a series of meetings have taken place with a close group of people in the NPP where about sixty projects and programmes are going to either be suspended or cancelled. These projects include the Obetsebi Lamptey road extension, the La and Shama General Hospital projects, the Tema Motorway Road project, and the Adomi Bridge project.โ
He also alleged that the government had made some payments to some of the contractors without the necessary green light to kickstart these projects.
โYou will be surprised this government paid some of the developers 15 percent to 20 percent mobilization fees and the contractors are sitting in their offices drinking tea because the government is unable to tell them whether to go ahead because the Finance Minister basically asked them to suspend all those projects and we are currently losing value because the contractors have taken the money and no work is currently going on.โ
He also demanded transparency in the selection of these projects for either suspension or cancellation.
โWhat are the underlying principles of the selection of the projects the NPP wants to cancel

The Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has disclosed that it is committed to engaging both factions of the conflict in Bawku to bring lasting peace to the area.
The Security Council said it is also committed and is set to commence investigations into the alleged killings of civilians in Bawku by some personnel of the military.
The military is alleged to have shot and killed seven civilians in Bawku on February 1, 2023, a claimed denied by the military hierarchy.
The allegations have sparked tension among relatives of the deceased who are calling for investigations into the matter.
After a crunch regional security meeting in Bolgatanga, the Chairman of the Upper East Regional Security Council who doubles as the regional minister, Stephen Yakubu, said REGSEC will commission investigations to unravel the truths behind the alleged killings.
The regional minister said there are many factors at play in the Bawku conflict reason which they are treading cautiously but will eventually investigate to unravel the circumstance and factors fuelling the conflict.
โThere is criminality in it, there is politics in it, and there are reasons why some people donโt want this conflict to end, but I want to appeal to all the factions to give peace a chance because Bawku is virtually dying, and it is something that I am very concerned about.โ
Mr. Yakubu further disclosed that the Regional Security Council has instituted some initiatives aimed at saving Bawku from the persistent and rampant attacks.
โWe are doing more initiatives, and we are going to be engaging people in the Bawku area to engage stakeholders to let them see the need

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has hinted that Ghana will probably secure the financial bailout it is seeking from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the middle of February 2023.
He said everything that is required of Ghana to do or submit in order to reach an agreement with the Fund has been done, and he is optimistic the processes should be finalized by next month.
Speaking at a meeting with some African-American students from the Harvard Business School at the Jubilee House, president Akufo-Addo said Ghanaโs economy has suffered greatly in recent times compelling Ghana to run to the IMF for the bailout.
โWeโve had difficulties in the past few years trying to reposition our economy to grow again. Some basic statistics that all of you are familiar with have pushed us back; the energy sector crisis, the global food crisis, and many others and Ghana is yet to escape from all of these crises.
โWe are going through the processes with the International Monetary Fund right now and hopefully by the middle of this month or February, a full-blown IMF programme will be put in place which will help us repair our public finances which took a big hit from external forces.โ
The government in December 2022 reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of processes leading to a bailout.
Ghana is seeking to secure $3 billion from the IMF to complement the revenue shortfalls and to service its external debt.
Ghana has gone to the IMF for the seventeenth time seeking to get help to solve the countryโs balance of payment challenges.

The Africa Center for Retirement Research is calling for an upward adjustment in the minimum pensions payable to low-contributing pensioners.
The center indicated that the meagre GHยข300 that low contributors receive monthly as poverty relief allowance worsens their living standards and must be increased to cushion them.
The center believes the figure is too small to sustain any pensioner in the current economic conditions.
Abdallah Mashud who is the Executive Director of the Africa Center for Retirement Research, says he expects SSNIT to increase the minimum pensions payable.
He argued the GHยข300 paid to low contributors is in contravention of both ILOโs and the National Pensionโs social security legislations.
โThe International Labour Organization (ILO) has emphasized the importance of maintaining minimum standards for social security administration. PNDC Law 247 and the National Pension Act also provide for the payment of minimum pension, but it has however become a major concern how minimum pension is treated by SSNIT, especially in the last few years.
โClaim analysis shows that the minimum pension had consistently increased since the year 2000 and in some cases, has even doubled especially in 2013 and 2014. The minimum pension has stood at GHยข200 for four successive years.โ
Mr. Mashud further opined that it is the hope of the Center that the Government will move in to increase the minimum pension payable for the 2023 year.
โWe need to also make known that the minimum pension of GHยข300, representing just $30 per month has been paid to pensioners for years and this amount is woefully inadequate so to sustain low-earning contributors, our expectation is that SSNIT must significantly increase the

Residents of Atiteti in the Anlo District in the Volta Region are appealing to government to fix their dilapidate bridge which links the community to other neighbouring areas.
The bridge, which was constructed some 30 years ago, is currently in a sorry state posing severe danger to commuters.
Residents recounted that a four-year-old girl lost her life after falling into the river.
In an interview with the Member of Parliament for Anlo, Richard Kwami Sefe, said several efforts to get authorities to fix the bridge have proven futile.
Meanwhile, Ghana National Gas Company Limited has assured to fix the bridge as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Founder and leader of Perez Chapel International, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, says the fight against corruption will not be won anytime soon.
The Archbishop indicated that the countryโs wealth has been used in the funding of some political campaigns, thus dipping the economy further down.
He further charged the opposition National Democratic (NDC) to ensure that if elected in the 2024 polls, the public purse will be protected.
He made these comments during his address to the leadership of the NDC when they joined his congregation for a thanksgiving service on Sunday, January 8, 2023.
โItโs obvious the greatest enemy of this nation is corruption, but looking at the way political parties fund their activities and campaigns, our view is that we are not going to [win the] fight [against] corruption anytime soon. Those political businesses who fund politicians end up hijacking the wealth of the nation. Politicians should help us fight this because our nation is sinking too fast, and we cannot continue in this direction,โ the founder and leader of the Perez Chapel International underscored.
Speaking on the upcoming 2024 General elections, he charged the Electoral Commission to be transparent in all of its endeavours.
โThe IPAC in the past has been a good forum that has helped. It shouldnโt be destroyed. The EC should work to bring its stakeholders together for peace and good of the nation and not divide them. The dealings of the EC should be so transparent that winners will be acknowledged by all, and losers will be seen by all to have lost,โ he advised.

Vehicle owners are lamenting the 43% increase in insurance premiums on third-party policies announced by the National Insurance Commission (NIC).
The disgruntled vehicle owners contend that the increment is on the high side. NIC has revised motor tariffs which took effect on January 1, 2023.
In a Citi News interview, some of the vehicle owners want NIC to reduce the percentage.
โThey need to work on it, and they should let the price come down because if you pay insurance to cover yourself, itโs important but the increment they made is too high, and they are supposed to work on it,โ a vehicle owner lamented.
โItโs very worrying. They should do something about it. I mean the standard one, and the third party, it used to be GHยข371, and now itโs GHยข506,โ one of the vehicle owners complained.
Some vehicle owners are demanding that the National Insurance Commission reduces the revised percentage on premiums.
The Consumer Protection Agency also added its voice to calls for the immediate suspension of the 43% increase in insurance premiums.
The Agency says the commission failed to consult various stakeholders before announcing the percentage.
โThe NIC failed to consult the various stakeholders before implementing the new charges, we believe it should be suspended for proper stakeholder engagements,โ the Chairman of Consumer Protection Agency, Kofi Kapito said.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has defended the construction of the controversial National Cathedral despite the widespread criticism.
He explained that the Cathedral will not just be a place of worship but a symbol of the countryโs Christian faith, adding that it will be a rallying point for the entire Christian community to come together and worship.
Speaking after donating an amount of GHยข100,000 to support the construction of the stalled National Cathedral, the President said, โas I have said before, the National Cathedral will not just be another monument adorning the skyline of Accra, it will be a rallying point for the entire Christian community to come together and worshipโฆ I am therefore committed to working with the Board of Trustees to ensure the completion of this project to the glory of Godโ.
Parliament in December 2022 disapproved the allocation of GHยข80 million for the construction of the National Cathedral.
The rejection followed a decision by the government to reintroduce the allocation in the budget estimates for the Roads and Highways and Communication Ministries.
The House subsequently approved an amount of GHยข180 million for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture as against the initial allocation of GHยข260 million for the year 2023.
The $450 million National Cathedral project was envisioned by the government in March 2017 as a physical embodiment of national unity, harmony, and spirituality.
The inter-denominational cathedral is expected to have an auditorium capable of seating 5,000 people, as well as chapels, and a baptistery.
