Taking care of a residents mind, body and spirit are necessary for a stable group of residents. Part 1.
By: Stephen Deraney, PhD

I have noticed on many occasions that there a number of assisted living communities that are very successful at moving people in but often times their back doors are wide open. It seems that 30 day notices are almost seen as the norm not the exception. I have found that if a community will engage the residents in meaningful activities that focus on mental acuity, physical strength and spiritual well being, it will help. As I have said many times I have never seen a resident do a happy dance when they move in but when engaged properly they acclimate and enjoy their new home. That means slow down on Bingo and learn to be creative. Activities such as music and pet therapy are excellent choices; dancing and exercise help keep the heart rate up and most residents enjoy it; devotionals and church services are also important to the boomer group because most of them grew up in a church setting. Remember to encourage your staff to have fun and encourage participation!! If you have specific questions please ask me at sderaney@
